Template:CenturyBCbox (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) and Template:Centurybox BC (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

With the creation of the template {{Centurybox BC}} the template {{CenturyBCbox}} became redundant. {{Centurybox BC}} has in turn been made redundant too with modifications to {{Centurybox}}. Both {{CenturyBCbox}} and {{Centurybox BC}} being redundant and no longer used, I propose their deletion. Jɪmp 16:14, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Sports in North American Cities (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

This template lists a bunch of cities in the U.S. and Canada, with unclear criteria for inclusion. Frankly I don't see what criteria could be established for such a general subject. It's totally arbitrary, and most of the links are to categories, making the whole thing just too random to be of much use for anything. heqs ·:. 08:44, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads-up. The intended purpose of the template was to assist navigation between the sports-related articles of various cities. (The U.S. and Canada were lumped together because in many major professional sports there are teams from both countries). I thought that a template would be helpful since at present there is very little consistency in the naming of the sports articles of particular cities: we have Sports in Philadelphia, Sport in Montreal, Pittsburgh Sports and so on. The link is to a city's sports article if it has one; if not, it is to the city's sports categories page. If there's a better way than a template to assist navigation between these pages, I'm all ears. Spikebrennan 11:35, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Who defines what is major league? What is the criteria for listing a city in the template? See major league and Major North American professional sports leagues for an overview of how subjective this is and how many claimants there are to this status. Navigation to sports categories by city can be done at Category:Sport by city. The "sport in..." / "sports in..." discrepancy is just a variation in English (most the of world would say "sport", while most Americans/Canadians would say "sports") that will sort itself out eventually. heqs ·:. 13:03, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The criteria for inclusion was merely that: (1) the city in question had either a "Sports in X" article (or the equivalent) or a "Category: Sports in X" category, and (2) I found it. I figured that the template would be a better tool for navigation than the Category:Sport by city (which doesn't seem to get used very consistently. The question of "what is major league" is not really relevant to my mind. Note that I'm not opposing the deletion, if there emerges a consensus that this is appropriate-- I just want to talk the issue through and see if there's a way to fix the template so that the flaws that you've identified can be corrected.Spikebrennan 19:10, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It artificially/tenuously glues together cities in separate countries. There are only a handful of sports leagues that include teams from both countries, and many more that do not, not to mention that league sports is only a portion of the notable sports activity in a given city. And, one country being a tenth of the size of the other means that it's going to be lost in the mix and not really assist navigation for info on that country. This kind of hodge-podge linking together is just not very encyclopedic. We already have summary articles for Sports in Canada and Sports in the United States, and their respective category trees. We have pretty good articles and templates that cover most of the individual sports and sports leagues, and they all link well to the individual teams in the different cities. And, Category:Sports in the United States by city, Category:Sports in Canada by city etc which I do not see any problems with. Not to mention that anyone can hop to an article about just about any of hundreds of cities and read about its sports. heqs ·:. 08:09, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for being willing to talk it out. I note that some- maybe all- of the cities that have a "Sports in X" (or equivalent article) do not link directly to Category:Sports in the United States by city or Category:Sports in Canada by city, so perhaps I will add those articles to those categories to enable the easy linking. • Delete I think the creator was well intentioned, but this is a case where I think a list has much greater potential. Resolute 19:49, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Sports in Puerto Rico (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

No other countries have templates for sports and no reason for Puerto Rico to be different. Articles in template seem randomly chosen, as there are many big players left out. Overall, seems to make minimal contributions to pages. -- Amazins490 (talk) 02:47, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete - overly broad, random and arbitrary. heqs ·:. 08:47, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - random, arbitrary, and unmaintainable if it were completed. Resolute 19:50, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - Not because its arbitrary, but because the template has a potential of growing to an massive size based on the fact that the island is constantly producing notable professional sports men, and anon users will never know how to judge the notability difference between a Miguel Cotto and a Alex Sanchez. - 00:55, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete As a member of WikiProject Puerto Rico I agree this is a totally non-useful template, although I would also move content into the relevant page, or create a new one if one is not available. Its deletion/move would be part of the renewed impetus for the project, after having a few Featured Articles (the last a few weeks ago, History of Puerto Rico).--Cerejota 02:48, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
