Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Literature

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Literature. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Literature|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Literature. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list also includes a sublist or sublists of deletions related to poetry.

Protagonist of non-notable series. Boleyn (talk) 19:19, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Keep and rename/refocus on book series. We have a few straggler articles like this, where it’s written after the protagonist and not the series, and when the series is notable it’s best to refocus and not delete. A lot of the plot would be reusable for that so it’s not quite like writing a whole different article. PARAKANYAA (talk) 20:46, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This article has been tagged as unsourced since 2009. I looked for reviews via Google, Google Scholar, ProQuest, Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, Booklist, Newspaper Archive, and JSTOR to no avail. There is an ISFDB listing, but it doesn't include any secondary verifications or reviews. I would redirect to the author, but this book has two authors, so I think the best option is to delete if NBOOK cannot be met. Fails WP:GNG tagged for notability for a decade. Won some non-notable awards. Questions? four Olifanofmrtennant (she/her) 15:45, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment. Reviewed in Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, Kirkus. all are on ProQuest which is a WPL resource). Shorter review in Horn Book Guide. Don’t have the time on my hands rn to look further, sorry :(. If not notable, should redirect to the author. PARAKANYAA (talk) 23:44, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at proquest this time and those didn't seem particularly indepth. Even then it wouldn't meet WP:THREE Questions? four Olifanofmrtennant (she/her) 01:53, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
NBOOK is two so WP:THREE doesn’t matter. Yes I haven’t had time to check, including newspapers or other book review sources, hence why I did not vote. Particularly in depth is not a requirement, merely that they be significant. I have not assessed this PARAKANYAA (talk) 02:06, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Keep I have added three reviews, more than satisfying WP:NBOOK. Certainly a paltry article, but not qualified for deletion. Οἶδα (talk) 06:44, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Too little to sufficiently meet the GNG to have its own article. A mention on the author's own article page is sufficient. Iljhgtn (talk) 19:51, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Keep apologies as I am too busy to format this, but searching the title on ProQuest shows that this has reviews in Choice magazine, Labour magazine, Journal of World History, Science & Society and probably more. ProQuest is a WPL resource so it can be verified that way. Passes NBOOK PARAKANYAA (talk) 02:13, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This subject does not meet Wikipedia's notability guideline. Cfls (talk) 00:36, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep per the significant coverage in multiple independent reliable sources. Wikipedia:Notability (books)#Criteria says:

A book is presumed notable if it verifiably meets, through reliable sources, at least one of the following criteria:

    1. The book has been the subject of two or more non-trivial published works appearing in sources that are independent of the book itself. This can include published works in all forms, such as newspaper articles, other books, television documentaries, bestseller lists, and reviews. This excludes media re-prints of press releases, flap copy, or other publications where the author, its publisher, agent, or other self-interested parties advertise or speak about the book.

The text was generated by Shen Yang, professor emeritus at the School of Journalism at Tsinghua University in Beijing, using artificial intelligence (AI). ... Mr. Shen worked with the AI for three hours, giving it 66 commands, to get a rough draft of 43,000 characters. The professor then cut, sculpted and refined this first draft, to arrive at a manuscript of some 6,000 Chinese characters, Land of Memories ( also translated by some media as Land of Machine Memory )."

The article notes: "When a professor at Beijing’s Tsinghua University set out to write a science fiction novel about the metaverse and humanoid robots, he turned to artificial intelligence for inspiration. The AI ended up generating his entire book – which then took out a national science fiction award honour. The nearly 6,000-character Chinese-language novel Land of Memories, by Shen Yang, a professor at the university’s school of journalism and communication, was among the winners of the Jiangsu Youth Popular Science Science Fiction Competition, Jinan Times, a newspaper in Shandong province reported. ... The story centres on a metaverse explorer named Li Xiao, who used to be a neural engineer in the real world. After accidentally losing all memories of her family during an experiment, she becomes interested in the legend of the Land of Memories, and hopes that her lost memories can be retrieved in the metaverse."

There is sufficient coverage in reliable sources to allow Land of Memories (simplified Chinese: 机忆之地; traditional Chinese: 機憶之地) to pass Wikipedia:Notability#General notability guideline, which requires "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject".

I couldn't find enough good sources to add to show these meet WP:NBOOK / WP:GNG. Possible WP:ATD of merge/redirect to Cate Tiernan, but I am not sure how ambiguous the title is. Boleyn (talk) 21:20, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Keep just... nuke 90% of it. Searching the individual book's names on ProQuest and EBSCO resulted in several reviews and per WP:PAGEDECIDE and WP:NBOOK it is probably better we have one article. The series itself may also pass GNG: it was released as Wicca, only called Sweep in the US, under which there is an entire journal article discussing the series as a whole and its themes (doi:10.1007/s10583-007-9058-). Haven't done a deeper look though. But wow overdetailed. PARAKANYAA (talk) 00:24, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result was merge‎ to Deipnosophistae. Star Mississippi 01:34, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Characters of the Deipnosophistae (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

WP:BEFORE finds that most of these are barely mentioned. Article describes itself as an "index" and "minor", making it difficult to obtain WP:SIGCOV. I would consider a redirect to Deipnosophistae and thought it was best to discuss WP:ATD. Jontesta (talk) 01:44, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • This is an argument to merge presented as a deletion discussion: the list is clearly relevant to the Deipnosophistae, and there is nothing wrong about treating it; the question is whether it should be a stand-alone list or part of the main article. Since the main article isn't that long, it seems perfectly feasible to merge this list there, without losing any of its contents—although perhaps it could be reformatted to make it take up less space (and if not, it's still better preserved there than deleted). If more content or discussion in secondary sources can be added, the list can remain separate, or be split off again at a later time. P Aculeius (talk) 14:08, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Merge cut down to main page. The characters seem an important aspect, and the main article is not long. PARAKANYAA (talk) 00:26, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Merge selectively per PARAKANYAA. This doesn't have WP:SIGCOV, but the bits that are sourced can be WP:PRESERVED. Shooterwalker (talk) 20:53, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

The article is mostly unsourced or cited to unreliable sources. WP:BEFORE did not indicate WP:SIGCOV but I could understand a redirect to The Magicians (American TV series). Jontesta (talk) 01:53, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
