Waterloo Road, now fully integrated into Lowry Community Academies Trust has been relocated to a new site and into a new building. Lindon King’s move to pastures new has resulted in Joe Casey being appointed as acting head, with mentoring provided by a fellow head from the trust called Steve Savage.

Schuey Weever has been up to his old tricks and selling contraband groceries to his fellow pupils culminating in some rather predictable schoolyard shenanigans . Separated from his sister Portia by being allocated different foster placements, the pair plot to move to Blackpool and live in their uncle’s caravan, but Portia is brought to her senses when she reveals the plans to Tonya Walters.

The staff find themselves without a proper staff room. The loss of their sanctuary prompts Neil Guthrie to contact the teacher’s union. When Serena Michelle from the trust gets wind of this she pressures Joe to get a grip on the situation.

Amy Spratt under financial pressure is promised a Teaching & Learning Responsibility (TLR) payment for her extra-curricular work by Joe, but when the rest of the staff learn of this he finds himself agreeing to TLR payments for all of the staff in order to appease them, a promise he later reneges on.

Libby Guthrie is being trolled by an unknown person. She suspects Dean Weever to be the culprit, but cannot find any proof. Libby finds an unlikely confidante in Kelly Jo Rafferty who tricks Dean into confessing. Outsmarted, he loses control and takes a swing at Neil who restrains him on the floor. Joe makes a tough call and suspends Neil, who suspects this is actually in retaliation for his union action. Lead by Coral Walker, the rest of the staff make it clear that they have no confidence in Joe’s leadership and when he finds himself stuck in an elevator, the staff use this as an excuse to shut the school on the grounds of safety. Joe realises the responsibility of being head teacher is just too much for him and decides to step down. Steve tracks down the staff in the local pub and listens to their concerns in order to find a mutually agreeable resolution. When Joe arrives Steve reveals the Trust have approached him to step in as head teacher, but wants Joe to remain as his deputy.

New Maths teacher Nisha Chandra takes advantage of Amy and her ongoing financial predicament by buying her car at less than market value.

When Nicky Walters receives a phone call about her mother having a stroke and passing away, she is consoled by Steve, who she knew from childhood.
