Vital Signs (or Vital Signs Publication) is the official publication of the West Visayas State University - College of Medicine. It is located on the 1st floor of Roxas Hall, the WVSU - College of Medicine building.

History

The publication was founded in 1989, around 14 years after the College of Medicine was established.^[1] Over the decades, Vital Signs has continuously evolved; exploring various channels and media as well as writing articles in many languages including English, Filipino, Hiligaynon, and Kinaray-a.

Logo

The earliest version of the logo was launched in 2015. It depicts the Rod of Asclepius with a shield containing Panay Island in the background. It is encircled by a green border which contains the school and publication name.^[2]

In 2017, the logo underwent re-branding. Minor revisions were made such as replacing the shield with some lines and adding a laurel wreath at the bottom of the logo. The rod was also swapped for a fountain pen to symbolize journalism in medicine.^[3]

The logo was once again revised in 2023, with the laurel wreath almost encircling the logo. The linework was also removed. Part of Negros Island, specifically Negros Occidental, was also included to symbolize the Western Visayas Region where the publication is based.^[4]

More recently, Vital Signs re-branded itself in the first quarter of 2024. This entailed a logo change which was more drastic than the previous ones. The current logo is more minimalist, retaining only the element of the Rod of Asclepius. A fountain pen was still put in place of the rod, and the snake element coils around it in the shape of a heart.^[5]

Vision

Vital Signs aims to unite all members of the West Visayas State University - College of Medicine community by fulfilling the need to be informed, providing productive change through knowledge, expression, and dialogue in and inside WVSU College of Medicine.

Mission

Vital Signs shall uphold moral character and personal discipline through free and responsive journalism. It shall foster an environment of intellectual discourse and exchange, producing doctors who are writers.

The College Press Conference and Awards (COPRE) is an initiative of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Region VI which aims to recognize the performance of school publications and individual writers in the field of development journalism.^[16]
