//This vastly restricts shared IP or new user editing to the watchlist, many types of edits will be reverted
//moves to pages in the watclist by new users will be reverted
var WATCHLIST_LIMITED_BOT=1;
//(must be 0 or 1)

So we are facing an overwhelmingly high level of vandalism that RC patrollers simply cannot deal with, so there is no choice but to instruct a bot to revert almost everything by new and anonymous users? News to me.

If, as I strongly suspect, this isn't the case after all, please disable this, now. The bot has been violating the three-revert rule and repeatedly reverting edits that are not obviously bad even to a human editor – Gurch 12:03, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

☒N Not done. That setting has been on since 13 October 2006, so it's unlikely to be the source of any recent problems; that may be due to one of the other settings. Note that the bot doesn't revert almost everything by anons, but rather edits to a certain list of articles on the bot's watchlist (I don't know which articles those are). So the bot is effectively soft-semi-protecting those articles, as I understand it, but I may be wrong. My guess from the bot's description is that its watchlist is meant to be set up to contain common target pages for pagemove vandals to move pages to and maybe some redirects from contentious alternative names for articles that are currently against consensus, and some particularly contentious articles where the bot is being used as an alternative to protecting the page. At present, the only pages being watched are those in Category:Semi-protected from banned users, which are all meant to be semi'd anyway, so that setting should be irrelevant at the moment; if there's a problem on a particular article, and it's in that category, then most likely it's because someone has falsely applied {{pp-semi-sock}} on an unprotected page, and if it isn't, it seems unlikely to be connected to that config option. (There were a lot more pages there until recently, but someone removed all of them.) I suspect that contacting User:Voice of All about this would make more sense than turning off a config setting with unclear meaning that's been on for over a year; I can't make an editprotected request without being clear on what, if anything, the request would do, and it just seems too likely that this may be the wrong solution to any given problem. --ais523 14:25, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
Also, it does not revert then all. It looks for certain IPs/open ports or users making certain types of edits when they either have very few or have only edited pages that are also watched. Voice-of-All 21:06, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

edit

I have asked an admin to disable this at the request of Domas (our database administrator) because it is requesting a page (Special:Contributions/newbies) at a rate of one request per second - the page itself requires 0.5 seconds to load, and this is causing a performance issue. Chatlog below:

09:49 < domas> wtf.
09:49 < domas> | 1683747204 | wikiuser    | 10.0.2.99:55000      | enwiki | Query   | 1       | Sorting result                                                        | /* IndexPager::reallyDoQuery
               (ContribsPager) VoABot II */ SELECT  page_namespace,page_title,page_is_ |
09:51 < domas> ah, newbies
09:51 < domas> WTF.
09:52 < domas> kill.
09:52 < domas> it is doing that like every few seconds
09:53 < domas> do we have blocks for reads?
09:53 < domas> =)

10:01 < domas> can anyone edit this: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:VoABot_II/admin_panel.js&action=edit
10:01 < domas> and disable the bot? :)
10:02 < domas> we could put 'newbie' bit into RC
10:02 < domas> of people really use that
10:02 < domas> *if
10:03 < Werdna> domas: I'm harrassing enwiki admins
10:03 < domas> well, not that urgent
10:03 < domas> just I think that 'newbies' query every second isn't something nice to do
10:04 < domas> because it is 0.5s query by itself

Please contact domas or another senior developer/systems administrator before re-enabling the bot — Andrew Garrett (Werdna) @ 124.189.64.31 10:05, 14 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

"AOl" in the heading on scanning AOL addrs is incorrectly capitalized. 68.39.174.238 (talk) 17:55, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Changed (but not really worth an editprotected request). — Carl (CBM · talk) 21:22, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

1st line comment should be "will shut down", not "while shut down". 68.39.174.238 (talk) 23:07, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Not done. There's no need to edit the comments like this. VoA presumably has this page on watchlist and will notice if you request changes. Editprotected requests aren't needed for minor things like this. — Carl (CBM · talk) 21:12, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

// Should ALL IP edits be scanned? (skips stuff) var SCAN_ALL_IPS_BOT=0; --> shouldn't this be set to 1 to allow proxy detection???

// Do not revert more than X times var MAX_BOT_REVERTS=2; ---> shouldn't this be set to 3 because there is a 3-revert rule?
