Lynx edit

Hi EndlessUnknown,

I'm not a great fan of random deletion of updates so always try to explain my reasoning for anything even remotely contentious! And so... re your update to Lynx. I have always thought the hull looked quite Marder-like but I was at the press briefing when it was unveiled at Eurosatory and Rheinmetall's Ben Hudson ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-hudson-a14171a ) actually stated it was not based on Marder. I don't actually have that on tape as such, but consider it good enough. I did a deep Google to see what 'rumours' the web turned up, but found little more than a strand of forum nonsense by an ill-informed. Happy to talk more if you know more.--Wolpat (talk) 07:38, 7 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Rheinmetall will tell you that is a new vehicle, because they are interested in marketing and selling the Lynx. The hull of the Lynx is however based on the Marder IFV. The frontal armour layout is identical - this includes the location of the bolts to hold the armour and the exact shape of the engine cover. The overlapping roof armour at the dismount comparment(introduced on the Marder 1A3) can be found on the dismount compartment of the Lynx. The turret ring of the Marder proturdes into the glacis armour, a distinctive design feature of the Marder - it is the same on the Lynx. The location of the driver's hatch is also identical. Spacing and type of the roadwheels, ground clearance, the location of the rear exhausts and many more feautres of the Lynx are identical to the Marder hull.
Rheinmetall has bought several hundred ex-Bundeswehr Marder IFVs and has been trying to sell them. The Marder APC presented at Eurosatory 2012 already featured the same type of hull side armour as the Lynx. The Marder CCV was first fitted with a LANCE turret (the RC version, as this wasn't meant for Australia).
The Rheinmetall employees pretend that the Lynx is a new vehicle, because it got a new engine, a new turret, a new FCS, a new gun, new tracks, new side armour, a new engine, etc. Saying "this a 30 years old design with new components added to it" doesn't really boost sales. --11:15, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
You are for sure correct with those similarities. It will be interesting to see what the future holds. Maybe a version based on refurbished Marder, and maybe a new-build version? Whatever happens, Australia will never buy a rebuilt Marder as part of Land 400, and I can't see Rheinmetall being dim enough to even try and offer them one! On a separate point, when/if you add the FLW500 to the FLW remote weapon station page, if required I have a great shot from Eurosatory this year. Drop me a message if you want it as the FLW isn't something I'd normally look at.--Wolpat (talk) 08:43, 8 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
