RFA Question

edit

Hi, I noticed one of your questions at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Arbitrarily0, Q5, seems a bit oddly worded. "You come across a article ready for deletion. The amount of people in favor of keeping the article and people in favor of deleting the article is equal. What do you do?" Why is the article "ready for deletion" if you're asking Arbitrarily what they would do? Might you consider changing the wording slightly? I would recommend: "You come across an article at WP:AFD. The amount of people in favor of keeping the article and people in favor of deleting the article is equal. What do you do?" Jujutacular T · C 11:11, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Or maybe "the number of people ..." - Dank (push to talk) 21:39, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Liked your example Jujutacular. Didn't realize that was bad until you mentioned that. Thanks for bringing that up! I'll change it. :-) Smithers (Talk) 01:31, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for bringing this up Jujutacular, I left a side-note under the question to address this. It's probably not necessary to change the question at this point Smithers; it should be fine now. Cheers, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 02:28, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re:that one article whose name I don't remember even though I just tagged it

edit

Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia! Nice to see a new user here.

In answer to your question, you're fine. I wouldn't tag it for CSD G1, only because it doesn't fit exactly. With this article, you can tell that "XXX is a mexican actor married to YYY." That's easy enough. I consider CSD G1 criteria for situations such as when you have an article entitled "Chocolate is delicious" and the content is "I like blue M&Ms more than red ones."

But in this article, I don't consider the subject notable just because members of their family are notable. There would have to be other reasons, too. Otherwise the most the article could become would have to relate to their notable family member. I probably should have tagged it for CSD A7 instead, actually. My mistake.

Anyway, to summarize: you didn't do anything wrong, and you're not in trouble. The criteria under which you tagged the article wasn't perfect, but it worked enough and people make mistakes like that all the time (myself included). The article has been deleted anyway. You seem like a nice person, and it looks like you're off to a good start on Wikipedia. If you have any questions or need any help, just ask me. A little insignificant Giving thanks to all that is me 16:56, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and if you're interested in the CSD/AFD area, you might like using Twinkle. It's a bit complex when you first use it, but the ability to automatically tag articles, start and format AFDs, warn users, and report vandals just by clicking a button can be really efficient. A little insignificant Giving thanks to all that is me 17:01, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
You mean CSD A1? Smithers (Talk) 00:48, 15 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Whoops, yes, I meant A1. I get confused sometimes, sorry :) A little insignificant Giving thanks to all that is me

Thanks for the heads up. A CSD nomination does not affect an AfD nomination (unless it's successful!), so no worries. I don't know if it quite falls under A7, but we'll see. Cheers! --SquidSK (1MClog) 02:31, 1 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Smithers, I have reversed your CSD template on Reerdilaal. It is in fact a copyright violation, as far as I can tell. I need to ask you, though, to not be too quick on the draw: even though this may have looked like gibberish to you, it might not be. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 06:06, 1 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Okay. That is totally fine. I do ask though what is was if it wasn't gibberish? Smithers (Talk) 01:21, 2 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Good question. I think it was either Somali or Malaysian, judging from the few hits I saw, but I'm not that broadly educated as a linguist. The nice thing about WP, there's lots of geeks with lots of different expertises. Take it easy, Drmies (talk) 02:23, 2 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Regarding your questions for MrKIA11 here, what were you thinking with Question 4? The question was "When are Cool Down Blocks acceptable?" You just gave him the answer... I've now deleted the link to the answer. Hopefully he won't notice it was ever there. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 15:17, 3 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

It isn't uncommon for someone to do that. It is actually a test to see whether the candidate totally copies the page or not when it's right in front of him or if he truly knows it. I am fine with you deleting the link though. Thanks for letting me know though. Regards, Smithers (Talk) 07:31, 4 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh. My apologies. I just figured it would be better to see if they knew without the policy in front of them, because then it forces them to either know it already or search by themselves rather than seeing how well they can reword something. Still, sorry for deleting the link if you had meant to put it in. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 11:57, 4 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Smithers. It's Mary here. Sorry I didn't know what all I needed to include.

He is a published author, has received awards for community service, marched with MLK in peace movement, and was influential when he was Executive Director of ACLU in Chicago. He lectured on urban opportunity. Contemporary of Andrew Greeley, and Helen Shiller.

I've got to go through his stuff to be specific on awards, dates, etc., and will get back with you, if that is OK.

Bye for now,

Mary RamseyBananacour (talk) 23:54, 5 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Okay. Sorry I took so long to get back to this... If you can get back to me on final stuff such as any awards, that would be awesome. Once I feel I have enough, I can get a rough draft of the article to you and then eventually onto the mainspace (where the articles are) on Wikipedia. Anything related more to ACLU? That would be pretty good to prevent it from getting into a CSD topic again. smithers - talk - sign! 01:36, 8 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/One Shot (JLS song)

edit

I've noticed that you believe that this AFD could be considered for an upgrade to speedy deletion. I'm new here, so where do I have to go to apply for this? Thanks, WossOccurring (talk) 23:31, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well, welcome to Wikipedia. I am not completely sure if it meets it, however if you want to try it, put {{db-song}} on the top of the article to tag it for an A9 speedy deletion. Make sure to let the author of the article know about it by using the notification code attached to the template on their talk page. That's really it. If it is deleted by a speedy deletion, the AfD discussion will be closed. Hope that helps! smithers - talk - sign! 23:58, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

National Register of Historic Places

edit

Thanks for your contribution of articles on NRHP sites! Have you heard of the Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places? If you're interested in writing more NRHP articles, you'll find this webpage very useful: it generates a complete infobox in Wikipedia formatting for any NRHP property; if you have any questions, ask User:Elkman, who runs it. Finally, one note of caution — http://www.nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com is not the NRHP's official website, so it shouldn't necessarily be trusted. Thanks for your help! Nyttend (talk) 18:11, 19 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Your RfA questions

edit

I hate to be nitpicky, but if you're going to start asking your speedy-deletion-criteria questions at lots of RfAs someone is going to mention it sooner or later: "criteria" is plural; "criterion" is the singular. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 17:15, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for bringing that up; Actually I was always confused which is which and it looks like I was wrong. I probably won't be asking my CSD questions too often, only if the candidate mentions they will be working in the area in Question 1. Nonetheless, thanks for clearing that up. smithers - talk - sign! 17:49, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have seen, on RfA's, people who move extensive discussions from a particular !vote to talk pages. How long should these discussions be before they are moved? Reply below please? smithers - talk - sign! 02:05, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, there is no real "number". It's a judgement call. If the discussion is getting long enough that it is disrupting the readability of the rest of the comments, then it should be moved to the talk page. Additionally, if it is off-topic, it should be moved. Hope that helps. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 02:12, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Riva on the Park

edit

The article Riva on the Park has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No reliable sources found to establish notability of a fairly generic building.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. tedder (talk) 02:59, 18 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I thought on Wikipedia that we were all supposed to collaborate to just make a good encyclopedia, expand it so questions would be answered by volunteers, and all learn something in the process. I guess this PROD does have reasoning, and since waiting for a deletion always stresses me out, and since you have the broom mop (fail), just delete the thing by {{db-g7}} please. Thanks. smithers - talk 05:07, 18 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi- yep, I tried collaborating. I spent time looking for information. That doesn't mean you shouldn't have done the same. I'll leave it to see if anyone else finds something on it. tedder (talk) 05:40, 18 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Just Out, COTW does well in new decade

edit

Howdy WikiProject Oregon folks, time again for the latest installment of As the Collaboration Of The Week Turns. Last week was one of the more successful COTWs in recent memory as we really worked hard as a community to improve Concordia University and Berry Botanic Garden. Both are now at least C class articles and nicely illustrated (thanks to Tedder, Finetooth, and Ipoellet). Plus it really was a group effort as we had five different WPORE editors work on the garden and ditto with the school, with some overlap between the two.

Anyway, this week, we have by request the completely unrelated Just Out and Terrell Brandon. As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. CSDs

edit

Hey there,

Not surprisingly I've been looking over a number of editors' RfA criteria, and yours struck a chord with me. CSD might be one of the trickiest areas for an admin to work in, because you'd darn well better know those criteria cold or you could really bollix things up. Who do you most respect for his or her work in CSD? Regardless of how my RfA turns out I believe it's an area that one can never know enough about. Regards, --otherlleft 14:06, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I am sorry to say that I do not respect any specific user for any certain topic yet given that I have only been here for about three months; I can certainly understand your position however... CSD is a very weird subject. All I need from RfA candidates stating in question 1 that they are intending to work in CSD is very few "mistaggings" (never repeatedly) and the notification to the author. Sorry I can't answer your "who do you look up to?" question. smithers - talk 15:17, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
