New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

edit

Hello ComplexRational,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

AfC Review: HELION Hydrogen Power

edit

Would you please have a look at Draft:HELION Hydrogen Power? See if you believe it meets the criteria for AfC acceptance. I found the article on the AfC 3 month backlog. I am new to the AfC process, so wasn't sure what the next step should be. Made a few improvements. I'm sure that it could be further refined. Thanks for your time! DutchTreat (talk) 10:16, 14 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@DutchTreat: I'm not too active at AfC and usually older drafts tend to be more difficult and so are left for more experienced reviewers. If you're interested in doing AfC reviews regularly, I'd recommend focusing on the front of the queue (which are more likely to be straightforward accepts or declines) or subject matters with more unequivocal notability criteria such as academics and politicians.
Anyway, taking a look at this draft, I'm not sure that it satisfies the notability guideline for organizations. Most of the cited sources do not describe the company in detail – of those, the most substantial coverage is in [1], though I can't tell whether this is a sponsored publication, in which case it would not qualify as an independent source. A Google search isn't turning up anything better, though take this with a grain of salt as my knowledge of French isn't sufficient to conduct a thorough search for French-language sources. Complex/Rational 13:34, 15 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for some tips on improving my skills at finding appropriate AfC targets. I have no experience with AfC, but recall that you mentioned recently getting involved. My first thought was the oldest items were are most risk of getting dropped, so I started there. Didn't realize this aspect that these items long on the queue might be the most tricky.
Your point about notability on HELION is valid. I'll wait for other editors to weight in. Appreciate your guidance. DutchTreat (talk) 10:14, 16 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think I mentioned being involved with NPP (for the May backlog drive) rather than AfC that day, but no worries – happy to help in any case. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Also, article submissions don't get "dropped" unless nobody edits them at all for six months, in which case they may be deleted under WP:CSD#G13 (though even then, anyone interested in finishing the job may request undeletion). Complex/Rational 21:26, 16 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Qupital

edit

Hello, you deleted Qupital on 1 June following its second AFD. How close is the current version to the one you deleted?

There's no recent version in the Wayback Machine, so I'm wondering if it's eligible for G4, especially as article creator oddly created it under the name Qupital Capital, of which I can find no trace online. Thanks, Wikishovel (talk) 11:59, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Wikishovel: The new version was moved a few times and eventually deleted per the author's request, but it was nearly identical to the old one except for a two-sentence addition about the company's doings in 2024 and a couple of additional citations.
It's clear that the new version was based directly on the old version; I'd say G4 would have applied, but borderline. It would have been necessary to check the additional sources and ensure that the original reason for deletion still applies (i.e., that no newly added sources reasonably challenge it), and make note of it when tagging. Such cases are usually deletable when almost all the content is identical and there was a strong, recent consensus at AfD, though if the page were rewritten entirely and expanded, I would advise sending to AfD again. UnDeletion Request for page "Qasim Ali Shah"

edit

Qasim Ali Shah page was deleted after discussion due to lack of authentic references. Qasim Ali Shah is a renowned public speaker in my country Pakistan. I am willing to provide authentic references and can also edit the article as per the rules of Wikipedia. So I am requesting you for undeletion of the page. His authenticity is proven that you can check he has millions of followers on all the platforms, youtube, facebook, instagram etc. Abidayub786 (talk) 04:32, 2 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Abidayub786: The principal issues raised at the AfD discussion were a lack of independent sources providing significant coverage of the subject – in other words, sources that are unambiguously not connected to, or commissioned by, the subject, and that talk about the subject in depth rather than in passing. These include newspapers that have a demonstrated record of fact-checking and independent journalism, for example. Having millions of followers on social media is irrelevant if that has not been discussed in the types of sources needed to sustain an article.
On these grounds, I will not undelete the page. If you believe authentic references exist, you are free to create a fresh draft and submit it for review via the articles for creation process. However, I doubt that much has changed regarding the subject's notability in three months, seeing as he had an article also deleted in 2018 and 2021. Complex/Rational 13:47, 2 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I do understand, can you guide me is there anyway that I can provide independent sources for the article? Abidayub786 (talk) 08:02, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm not familiar with the subject matter or Pakistani media so I can't provide specific guidance. In general, acceptable sources will be published by reputable authors not connected to the subject. Types of sources to avoid include tabloids (usually not reliable), state-sponsored media when press freedom is limited (censorship comes at the expense of accuracy), works published by the subject (not independent), and anything determined to be unreliable or deprecated in this list documenting frequently-discussed sources. Also keep in mind that multiple acceptable sources are needed to demonstrate notability and have a draft accepted. Complex/Rational 14:06, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Requesting revision delete

These four edits progressively added libelous BLP vandalism to Liam Conlon, with the end result being 700+ bytes of disgustingness. Due to the nature of the BLP vandalism, I would strongly advise you use RevisionDelete to send those revisions to the shadow realm/distortion world/Hell/whereever deleted revisions go. Wait, am I doing this right? This is my first time requesting RevDel. 24.115.255.37 (talk) 18:26, 7 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Done, thanks for bringing this to my attention. And yes, your request was fine. There isn't a general "requests for revdel" page because we don't want to draw extra attention to problematic revisions, so asking any active admin in Category:Wikipedia administrators willing to handle RevisionDelete requests will do. However, if the material in question is especially problematic, it may sometimes be better to make a request offsite (usually by email or another communication platform), and personally identifying information should be reported directly to the Oversight team via email.
One more thing to note – edit summaries like this and this can add fuel to the fire, so it's better to quietly revert and report to the appropriate noticeboard. See WP:DENY. Complex/Rational 20:54, 7 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
