Tuntenhaus

edit

Hi JulietJulietJuliet, I came here to welcome you to wikipedia after seeing Draft:The Battle of Tuntenhaus, since I edit articles related to squatting and for example created Battle of Mainzer Straße. Now I see you are actually the director of the film, pleased to "meet" you, I enjoyed watching it years ago. Being the director I would see as a conflict of interest, so I would suggest reading that link and perhaps leaving this article to others. If we edit an article we have been personally involved with, that's not necessarily a problem however as you will have seen you added for example the word "groundbreaking" which another editor removed as not being encyclopedic. On a quick look, I do think The Battle of Tuntenhaus is notable enough have a wikipedia article, reviews would help with that if you can link any. It can be frustrating to have your words edited (especially as a new editor), so I wanted to check in with you first before making edits - interested to hear your thoughts, Mujinga (talk) 08:44, 1 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks so much Mujinga! Nice to e-meet you as well. I'm totally at ease with anybody editing. I just basically wanted to get a stub up there, and leave it to others. I did see that there might be a conflict (although it's not a commercial project for me, obviously, all money from festivals/screenings goes to the squatters). I could get a film festival person to do it if you think that's necessary. It plays pretty often, especially in Germany. I would love if you could move it forward. The only review I saw so far was the Los Angeles Times (which I linked) but I will look more, also in German. Please let me know the best thing(s) for me to do now. ~Juliet. JulietJulietJuliet (talk) 00:25, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi again Mujinga. I just wanted to add that I totally get the language issue with "groundbreaking". It was used in regards to the Channel 4 "Out On Tuesday" series, which was the first-ever queer tv series (in the world). Maybe there's a more fact-based comment I could make about that. JulietJulietJuliet (talk) 00:33, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
PS Thanks so much for you help and kind words. ~Juliet JulietJulietJuliet (talk) 00:49, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hiya, I think if you are aware of a potential conflict of interest (or COIN as it might be referred to here), then it's ok but it would prob be worth also mentioning it on the talkpage (Draft talk:The Battle of Tuntenhaus) as well. I wouldn't necessarily disagree the film was grouhndbreaking by the way, it's a claim that needs to be well-sourced. If you were able to find any German language reviews that would be great, maybe you could put the links here or also at the talkpage. I'll make a start on fitting the article to wikistylem which means it will probably end up looking more lke The Cambridge Squatter or The Strategy of the Snail. Cheers! Mujinga (talk) 10:56, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I guess I could put a statement on the talkpage that says something like "This article was initiated by the director of the film, Juliet Bashore. Is that ok? (as soon as I figure out what the talk page is haha). *Or* I could ask a film festival person who already is a contributer to resubmit it (the Feminist Elsewre Festival is having it at Kino Arsenal soon). Please tell me what is better. Also: there are a couple other issues I was trying to figure out how to fit in: 1) historical controversy: during the editing we decided to make two versions of the film. We made one for British television, and one for use in Germany. The British version included footage of the neo-nazis in their nearby squat, whereas the German version omitted the Nazis. Everyone from the squat was really mad when they found out about the British Broadcast version, since they didn't want us interviewing Nazis at all. We interviewed the Nazis despite the squat's approval because the "head Nazi" there (Michael Kunin) was gay and dying of aids (he died shortly thereafter), and the producer wanted to do a separate story about the whole gay nazi thing. Anyway, the whole squat was really mad at me for a long time. Now however the version with Nazis is the one they screen and they agree it is better with them in. Probably people will want to chime in on that. I think it ultimately gets at the interesting issue about artistic freedom, political messaging, censorship, etc. People will want to chime in on that probably. Would that go on the talkpage also?? 2) there was a recent museum installation in Berlin featuring a life-sized simulacrum of the squat, reconstructed from scenes from the film, and also film sequences playing thorough out the museum. That is going up in New York as well, at the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space (and possibly ABC NoRio collaborating). I thought that was something cool to add. Is that also something for the talk page or can that go under a heading of museum installations or something? There was also a lot of press about that. JulietJulietJuliet (talk) 16:55, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Also thanks for that great Battle of Mainzerstrasse page. JulietJulietJuliet (talk) 16:56, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes I think it would be great for you to make a note along those lines on the talkpage, which is here - Draft talk:The Battle of Tuntenhaus. How to do this is covered at WP:DISCLOSE, if that makes no sense just let me know and I can help out.
In a wikipedia article, pretty much everything needs to be cited to a reliable source - so this historical controversy about the nazi squat is super interesting but even though you are the director of the film, we still need a reliable source reporting these things, not because anyone doesn't believe you, but because by the same logic someone else can claim something untrue and mess up the article, that's why we need the sourcing. Same answer for your second query, it would indeed be cool to add the info about the museum installation and the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space show (also congrats, it's great that people are still inspired by the film), but only if there's a reliable source, like a review in an established newspaper like NYT or Berliner Zeitung. Blogs aren't regarded as reliable unless they are by subject area experts. Cheers, Mujinga (talk) 17:27, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
It looks fantastic! I will try to find a graphic. Meanwhile I will add some festival screenings. Thank you so much. Thank you for helping to keep this history alive for a new generation. JulietJulietJuliet (talk) 15:16, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I found a legit link to a credit for the producer, channel 4, so added that at the beginning. I also added a line at the end about screenings ongoing, but that might have to go due to the references being dodgy (on wikipedia terms haha). JulietJulietJuliet (talk) 16:51, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
So the link for the producer just goes to a BFI search page and I've hidden the ongoing screenings refs (by putting them between hidden tags so you can still see them when editing) because I think at this stage to get an article published it's better to focus on fewer sources that are high quality and give significant coverage. Mujinga (talk) 09:59, 4 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
First off, I apologize for not being quicker to get a handle on how best to do citations, determine "mainstream" etc. I have been reviewing the guidlines this morning. Secondly, wow! I just found the Taz review and puzzling over whether it would be considered sufficiently "mainstream" when I saw your note. I pasted the link there. I also have a (corrected) BFI link. That was my fault, I put up the wrong link. Here is the correct link: https://collections-search.bfi.org.uk/web/results (still not 100% sure it meets your criteria). I will hold off on publishing these until I get your ok. Thanks for bearing with me on this (somewhat steep) learning curve. JulietJulietJuliet (talk) 21:12, 4 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
https://taz.de/Kinotipp-der-Woche/!5789409/ that's the Taz link, for you convenience. Give me a thumbs up and I'll put it in. JulietJulietJuliet (talk) 21:17, 4 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ok, 1) I took out the BFI link which seemed broken, along with the production company info. The taz article does mention that it was produced by Channel 4, so maybe I could get their credit in with that as a citation? Please let me know. 2) I also added some reviewer quotations and the taz link. JulietJulietJuliet (talk) 04:51, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hiya sorry short on time these days - 1/ https://collections-search.bfi.org.uk/web/Details/ChoiceFilmWorks/150372042 that works as the BFI link but it's a bit strange because it gives info for Tuntenhaus and Khush at the same time, that's why I said another link might be better and the TAZ link would work, that's a reliable source 2/ cool will check later Mujinga (talk) 22:27, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'm looking again at the article now - it's coming along well! On reliable sources, taz is taken as reliable I would say since it's well-established and importantly has an editorial policy and therefore some scrutiny which means it can't/shouldn't publish nonsense by wikipedia standards. That's what differentiates it from a blog (in case it's not clear) since anyone can selfpublish a blog and say what they want. Hope that makes sense, I'm trying to explain wikipedia referencing requirements. Mujinga (talk) 11:57, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Mentoring

edit

Hellos your assigned mentor got changed because the previous one stopped participating, so I requested to be your mentor since we already collaborated on The Battle of Tuntenhaus. Mentorship is just a way of helping new users acclimatise so don't worry you don't need to do anything but do feel free to contact me if anything wiki-related is confusing, cheers! Mujinga (talk) 14:17, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Great, nice to see you again Mujinga. Thanks, I didn't even know I had a mentor! I should have a new/better image for this to upload shortly. Also: I was wondering how to generate a mirror site in German. Do you know? 2001:5A8:4305:F600:3C08:4745:78FF:64B9 (talk) 16:46, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hellos. Oh that's interesting you didn't know about your previous mentor! If you look at my talkpage you'll see I get a ton of questions from new editors who have been assigned me as a mentor, but I don't actually know what they click on to make the question :) Good news on the new image, please make sure it's properly licensed or it will most likely get deleted again (I said like a true wikibureaucrat haha). Wikipedia:Image use policy would be the place to start if you wanted to read into the process.
You speak German I assume? If you mean you want to make a German wikiarticle about The Battle of Tuntenhaus, you'd need to join up again on de.wikipedia.org, which is effectively a separate sister project. Then you'd be fine to translate it over from the english article, just as long as you make a note in the edit summary or on the german talkpage that you've done that. There may be an automatic translation tool from EN to DE, sorry I don't know if there is one, I only know it's disabled going from DE to EN. Wikipedia:Translate us would prob help understand the process, cheers! Mujinga (talk) 16:50, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for File:TuntenhausSquatters1990.jpeg

Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 18:30, 10 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi JulietJulietJuliet, looks likem you are having fun with images! For this notification, I'd suggest using the same licensing info as on the other image, File:Tuntenhaus squatters on the balcony of MainzerStrasse 4, summer 1990.jpg. Looks to me you are fine to upload it since you took it, you just need to make sure the licensing shows that for other editors (and bots). Let me know if you need any more help. Mujinga (talk) 10:03, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hoo-boy, yeah lots of fun with images! These images are the same, the duplicate happened as I was trying to fix the tag. Could you just remove the duplicate image and we use the one with the correct tags? I don't see how to wrangle that. 2001:5A8:4305:F600:5EF:2A28:7406:B8CB (talk) 16:36, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Haha! OK that's fine then we can just leave it to get deleted automatically(?) after December 17. I've left a note at File_talk:TuntenhausSquatters1990.jpeg. Mujinga (talk) 17:01, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
