Copyright, notability, COI

I need to explain some things about Wikipedia.

• Copyright: Wikipedia cannot hold copyright material, not even in sandboxes or user pages, not even temporarily. Please read Wikipedia:Copy-paste.

Assertion of permission to use text is not enough; we have to be certain that the person giving a release has the authority to do so, and that the actual copyright holder understands and agrees to Wikipedia's license terms, which allow any reader to copy, modify and re-use material for any purpose including commercial. For those reasons, a formal copyright release, as described in WP:Donating copyrighted materials, is required.

It is very seldom worth making a copyright release, because the promotional tone of a company or personal website is likely to be quite unsuitable for an encyclopedia article, which requires a neutral point of view. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia: it is not a notice-board for pinning up promotional material, copies of mission statements, etc.

• Notability: another reason why copying a website does not make an encyclopedia article is that Wikipedia is selective about subjects for articles. The criterion used is called WP:Notability, and is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." This requirement applies also to non-commercial organizations and "good causes". There is more detail at WP:Notability (organizations and companies) and the WP:FAQ/Organizations, and good advice on how to write an acceptable article at WP:Your first article.

• Conflict of interest: your former username shows that you are connected with the organizations you have been writing about. Please read Wikipedia's guidlines on WP:Conflict of interest and WP:Best practices for editors with conflicts of interest.

I am sorry that we do not make clearer at sign-on time that Wikipedia is not a free "notice-board" site like Myspace or Facebook for people and organizations to write about themselves; but it is trying to do something quite different. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 11:13, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
