"Foo route" redirects

I'm not sure whether or not creating "Foo route" redirects to the ferry services are a good idea, since they're too generic. Staten Island route could also refer to the SIR, SI Expressway, etc. Same for Rockaway route. They could be dabified, but you'd be running into WP:CONCEPTDAB. I was about to nominate them for RFD, but I thought I'd ask your input first. – Train2104 (t • c) 02:04, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

Yeah, I guess you can nominate the "XXX route" links for RFD. I wouldn't object, since I seem to have made them without considering other options. However, the "XXX Ferry" links might be of some use. epicgenius (talk) 11:51, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

Staten Island route listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Staten Island route. Since you had some involvement with the Staten Island route redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. – Train2104 (t • c) 17:05, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

inadvertent edit conflict and thanks

My apologies for this edit that inadvertently undid some of your changes to the article for Greenpoint, Brooklyn. My thanks to you for all of your New York City related edits, which have been a remarkably productive addition to Wikipedia's coverage of all things related to the city. Wikipedia needs more active, competent and cooperative editors like you who are willing to do the hard work to improve articles with content and sources in a collegial manner. Alansohn (talk) 15:33, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

@Alansohn: No problem. I saw you were reverting a certain other editor. And thank you for adding sources and information to NYC neighborhoods, especially your additions to notable people and your cleaning up of these articles. I appreciate it very much. epicgenius (talk) 19:49, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

BMT Fourth Avenue Line

I just added a whole lot of information to this page about the line's history. Can you look through it to see if I made any mistakes. There are a lot more things that could be added. Just check the Brooklyn Daily Eagle archives. Thanks.--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 22:10, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

@Kew Gardens 613: That's awesome. I'll look through the article for errors and add more information whenever I can. epicgenius (talk) 12:13, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
Thanks.--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 17:24, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject Chinese in New York City

Hi Epicgenius, I understand that you have a live template. When will the category- and article-populated version actually go live? For example, would it be possible to start out testing this weekend with just two or three articles or categories - say Chinese Americans in New York City, Category:Chinese-American culture in New York City, and Category:Chinatowns in New York City? Best, Castncoot (talk) 04:50, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

@Castncoot: Thanks for asking. It should go live by early this week, probably, because I still have to create the "X-class Chinese in New York City articles" and "X-importance Chinese in New York City articles" categories, as well as the wikiproject's main page itself. Otherwise, it's good to go. epicgenius (talk) 15:35, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
I created the wikiproject's main page and talk page. epicgenius (talk) 15:51, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
Wonderful! These pages (Wikipedia:WikiProject Chinese in New York City and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Chinese in New York City) set the stage nicely for their respective evolutions. (If it would be possible, and of course if you wouldn't mind, it would be nice if you could preserve this section on this page during just a few of your future Talk page archives, simply so that people can continue to seamlessly refer to these new WikiProject pages through the direct and easy wikilinks I have provided in the previous sentence as you continue to edit and grow these pages.) Best, Castncoot (talk) 20:51, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
I don't know about that. I need to find a way to "pin" this section to the top. But OK... epicgenius (talk) 00:29, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

Bumping thread for 183 days. epicgenius (talk) 00:30, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

Great idea. Castncoot (talk) 00:32, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
Hi there, Epicgenius. Hope you're doing well. I just wanted to remind you to please connect the appropriate pages to this WikiProject. Thanks! Castncoot (talk) 13:25, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
@Castncoot: OK, I will do that soon. Thanks, epicgenius (talk) 18:20, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
Hi Epicgenius, hope you're doing well. Just wondering how this effort is going. Thanks, Castncoot (talk) 01:56, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
It's going well. After this week I should have more time, since I've finished most of my college interviews by that time. Sorry for the delay. epicgenius (talk) 03:34, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks! Castncoot (talk) 05:46, 13 February 2017 (UTC)
Hi Epicgenius! Perhaps you might be able to knock this out this weekend (or at least a good portion of it)? :) Best, Castncoot (talk) 03:57, 11 March 2017 (UTC)
Oh, I forgot about this. Not today unfortunately, but I think tomorrow. I also have a huge chunk of free time after next week. epicgenius (talk) 12:58, 11 March 2017 (UTC)
OK, good luck with this. I'm sure it will have a great end result! Don't feel pressured to get it all done in one day, however (unless you're able). Best, Castncoot (talk) 15:13, 12 March 2017 (UTC)
Hi Epicgenius, hope you're doing well. Do you think it might be possible to do this over this weekend or this week? Best, Castncoot (talk) 03:59, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
Sure. I just got my computer fixed. Sorry for the delay. epicgenius (talk) 15:31, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
Hi Epicgenius, hope you're doing well. Time is running out on this in a way, before this gets bumped off your talk page. Not technically of course, because you could always keep renewing it - but what would be the purpose of that? IMHO you'd be the best editor for this job, especially given your commitment to it already - but it can't be held up indefinitely. What is your plan? Best, Castncoot (talk) 16:07, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

@Castncoot: Sorry for huge delays. It's been computer problems for the past week. I have to get one Did You Know nomination and one Good Article nomination out of the way before starting this, but I can do it concurrently. Regards, epicgenius (talk) 17:03, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

I understand. Thank you for attending to it all the same. :) Best, Castncoot (talk) 17:06, 2 April 2017 (UTC)
Hi Epicgenius, hope you're doing well. Have you been working on this concurrently? May I know the status? Thanks, Castncoot (talk) 03:28, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
Yes I am, thanks for asking. I am currently working on the structure of the talk page categories, sorting by article quality and by importance. I will upload the banners soon. Regards, epicgenius (talk) 01:50, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
Hi Epicgenius, hope you're doing well. Have you created the banners yet? Time is (conceptually) running out. Castncoot (talk) 05:30, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
@Castncoot: Sorry, I seem to have actually forgot about the banners this time. Tell you what: I'll try to finish it within 3 weeks. After May, I won't have much time to be on Wikipedia for at least 3-4 months, so I'll try to finish it by then. However, if I don't finish by then due to some reason or another, you can ask for help from someone at WT:NYC, or someone else who knows how to make wikiproject banners at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals, or you can read Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide#Creating a WikiProject and try to do it yourself. I will make sure the banners are up by then. Thanks, epicgenius (talk) 15:05, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
OK, well thank you for trying your very best!!! Castncoot (talk) 05:16, 1 May 2017 (UTC)
Would you appreciate a weekend reminder for the next couple of weeks, Epicgenius? Or do you feel that you won't need such a reminder? Best, Castncoot (talk) 03:37, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, sure. epicgenius (talk) 13:07, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
Congrats, Epicgenius! First banner up at Template:WikiProject Chinese in New York City - a great milestone! Keep up the great work!!! Best, Castncoot (talk) 04:07, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
Thanks! Actually Castncoot, the template and categories are complete. I populated the first 100 articles with this template as well. Feel free to add more as you see fit. epicgenius (talk) 13:10, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
Fantastic. Thank you so much! Castncoot (talk) 12:33, 7 May 2017 (UTC)

Student editing project

I made the changes to the Farragut Houses for a class project and I would appreciate it if you did't edit it until May 24th. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MarcStephan (talkcontribs) 17:46, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

@MarcStephan: I didn't realize that you were part of a class project. I'll wait until then to review these changes. epicgenius (talk) 18:04, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

Newtown Creek articles

Oops! Sorry about that! New to Wikipedia, only four or five articles so far, one in astronomy. Going forward, if I move a new article from sandbox to live article and would like to add a disambiguation line to an existing article as a link as you did, is it appropriate to do so or ask the creator of the legacy article? Thanks, ARE — Preceding unsigned comment added by Are1718 (talkcontribs) 02:07, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

I had forgotten to check the 'What links here' link to see that there were over a hundred links. Are1718 (talk) 02:09, 9 May 2017 (UTC) Yep, forgot the tildes before.

@Are1718: No problem. If you move a new article from your sandbox, you should check to make sure the article title you are trying to move to already exists. If so, the existing page is probably the primary topic for that particular page. Or you could ask the creator, if they're active. epicgenius (talk) 02:28, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Editing News #1—2017

Did you know?

Did you know that you can review your changes visually?

When you are finished editing the page, type your edit summary and then choose "Review your changes".

In visual mode, you will see additions, removals, new links, and formatting highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

The wikitext diff is the same diff tool that is used in the wikitext editors and in the page history.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and adding the new visual diff tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

A new wikitext editing mode is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. The 2017 wikitext editor has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures to enable the ⧼Visualeditor-preference-newwikitexteditor-label⧽.

A new visual diff tool is available in VisualEditor's visual mode. You can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. More features will be added to this later. In the future, this tool may be integrated into other MediaWiki components. [1]

The team have added multi-column support for lists of footnotes. The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can request multi-column support for your wiki. [2]

Other changes:

  • You can now use your web browser's function to switch typing direction in the new wikitext mode. This is particularly helpful for RTL language users like Urdu or Hebrew who have to write JavaScript or CSS. You can use Command+Shift+X or Control+Shift+X to trigger this. [3]
  • The way to switch between the visual editing mode and the wikitext editing mode is now consistent. There is a drop-down menu that shows the two options. This is now the same in desktop and mobile web editing, and inside things that embed editing, such as Flow. [4]
  • The Categories item has been moved to the top of the Page options menu (from clicking on the   icon) for quicker access. [5] There is also now a "Templates used on this page" feature there. [6]
  • You can now create <chem> tags (sometimes used as <ce>) for chemical formulas inside the visual editor. [7]
  • Tables can be set as collapsed or un-collapsed. [8]
  • The Special character menu now includes characters for Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics and angle quotation marks (‹› and ⟨⟩) . The team thanks the volunteer developer, Tpt. [9]
  • A bug caused some section edit conflicts to blank the rest of the page. This has been fixed. The team are sorry for the disruption. [10]
  • There is a new keyboard shortcut for citations: Control+Shift+K on a PC, or Command+Shift+K on a Mac. It is based on the keyboard shortcut for making links, which is Control+K on a PC or Command+K on a Mac. [11]

Future changes

  • The VisualEditor team is working with the Community Tech team on a syntax highlighting tool. It will highlight matching pairs of <ref> tags and other types of wikitext syntax. You will be able to turn it on and off. It will first become available in VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode, maybe late in 2017. [12]
  • The kind of button used to Show preview, Show changes, and finish an edit will change in all WMF-supported wikitext editors. The new buttons will use OOjs UI. The buttons will be larger, brighter, and easier to read. The labels will remain the same. You can test the new button by editing a page and adding &ooui=1 to the end of the URL, like this: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Sandbox?action=edit&ooui=1 The old appearance will no longer be possible, even with local CSS changes. [13]
  • The outdated 2006 wikitext editor will be removed later this year. It is used by approximately 0.03% of active editors. See a list of editing tools on mediawiki.org if you are uncertain which one you use. [14]

New things on the MTA website

I am not sure if there is anything we can add to any pages, but I thought that you would find these of interest. First of all, the MTA has Courtesy Counts buttons to send to people if they need a seat. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/14/nyregion/if-a-pregnant-straphangers-bump-isnt-obvious-maybe-the-button-will-be.html?_r=0

The article linked here http://nymta.civicconnect.com/courtesy i noticed that it was not mta.info, but instead nymta.civicconnect.com. I deleted everything after the slash and got this: http://nymta.civicconnect.com, a page for the redoing of the SI express bus system.--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 12:23, 14 May 2017 (UTC)

Interesting. The NY Times article could probably be added to the main article on NYC Subway. Meanwhile, it looks like http://civicconnect.com is a website for smart cities and the MTA simply registered a subdomain for some reason. I don't see anything about SI express buses though, just the Courtesy Counts thing. epicgenius (talk) 14:54, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
They changed it. I am glad I saved it on the web archive. Here is what it said. https://web.archive.org/web/20170514121238/http://nymta.civicconnect.com--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 15:10, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the archive still advertises the same Courtesy Counts campaign. epicgenius (talk) 15:36, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
I know why it did that. The two dashes from my signing the comment messed it up. Let me try again. [15] --Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 15:50, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
OK, so I think the mention of Staten Island is part of the MTA's smart-city initiative. epicgenius (talk) 15:55, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
May you please elaborate? Someone on subchat said that this was outdated.--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 15:53, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
I mean that the nymta website is a subdomain of the civicconnect.com website, which is a smart-city website. Maybe the MTA wanted to make a smarter Staten Island bus system and didn't add any other projects after the initiative was finished. epicgenius (talk) 15:55, 14 May 2017 (UTC)

28th street (IRT Lexington Avenue Line)

Hi. i was wondering where you got the information regarding the elevator leading to the southbound platform at the 28th Street station for the 6 train (I can't find any information anywhere and I was wondering if you could fill me in on the given information). — Preceding unsigned comment added by NewYorkYankeesVersusNewYorkMets09281999 (NewYorkYankeesVersusNewYorkMets09281999rkYankeesVersusNewYorkMets09281999|contribs) 18:18, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

@NewYorkYankeesVersusNewYorkMets09281999: It's not an MTA elevator. It is actually a private development's elevator and is privately maintained, so there wouldn't be any info on that on the MTA website. Since it is not open yet, I can only tell you that it is through personal observation and Google Street View. epicgenius (talk) 18:24, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

RE 28th street

Oh

Do you know why it will only be accessible to the mezzanine when it opens (I thought that the fare control was at platform level at 28th street, thus it would make the southbound platform ADA accessible — Preceding unsigned comment added by NewYorkYankeesVersusNewYorkMets09281999 (talkcontribs) 01:45, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

The platform level is same as fare control level. There is no mezzanine. I need to clarify that. Thanks for notifying me. epicgenius (talk) 02:00, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

It could be put in Metropolitan Transportation Authority's main article. However, I don't want to put it into its own article just yet because of concerns that it could be too recent an event to determine if it is notable in the long run. But let me know what you think. epicgenius (talk) 02:01, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

Eighty-Sixth Street Crosstown Line

Do you remember in February 2017, when you offered to move my sandbox for the 86th Street Crosstown Line bus/former trolley and work on it yourself? Well if you can keep the existing name, I might consider letting you grab it from me and expanding it. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 03:39, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

@DanTD: Sure. If you want, you can move it to my userspace or to the draft space. I'll definitely find sources to expand it, and I can keep the existing name. epicgenius (talk) 03:42, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
Ugh! Now I can't decide which one I want to send it to. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 10:49, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
@DanTD: I'll just copy it to my third sandbox if you want. I have a few bus drafts there already. epicgenius (talk) 12:20, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
Okay, that's a nice start. But what I want to know is when was the Eight Sixth Street Railroad established, who acquired it before New York Railways (maybe Metropolitan Traction Company?) or did NYR acquire it themselves? These and other issues kept me from finishing the article. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 22:27, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
@DanTD: I need to do some research on that, but I'll keep you posted if I find something. epicgenius (talk) 03:55, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Do you know why the elevator is out of service right now (and when the elevator will be reopened for customer usage)? It would be really helpful to know that as soon as possible. Lower Montauk Branch Rail Study

Because of Elizabeth Crowley's efforts, a study is being undertaken for light rail on the Lower Montauk Branch.
