Can someone fix the header to make the text large and format stuff to look cool. An infobox or some kind of template is probably needed. ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:16, 9 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Question

edit

Re: "Important topics..." are miniature pigs different from Pot-bellied pigs? LadyofShalott 18:41, 9 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good question. It seems that miniature pot bellied pigs and miniature pigs are somewhat synonymous. Most miniatures are related as best I can tell to pot bellied pigs (and descended from them). Perhaps not enough of a distinction? On the other hand this book title suggest they are not one and the same [Miniature pigs By Pat Storer, Kristin Storer]. This is also interesting [1]. And what about a miniature variety of a pig that isn't a pot bellied pig? Does such a thing exist? This is why this effort is so vitally important. There is a troubling gap in knowledge for these subjects... ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:27, 9 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
This seems to indicate that minitaure pigs are vital to saving lives, and that not all miniatures are pot bellies.[2]. ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:29, 9 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Prohibitions on bacon seems like it would be the same as Religious restrictions on the consumption of pork. --kelapstick (talk) 15:15, 10 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

You and your sensible reasoning. Always raining on my contrived notions. I didn't see much about the limitation on eating bacon in the bacon article. So a section might be good, but your point is well taken. The prohibitions aren't narrowly focused on bacon. So we'll have to fatten up the KBC2009's larder of articles with something more notable. What about fakon? Is that an article subject in the making? Or bacon alternatives? Turkey bacon?ChildofMidnight (talk) 16:39, 10 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

The Life and Cuisine of Elvis Presley

edit

Would probably pass an AfD better than just the sandwich, the sandwich could be the hook kelapstick (talk) 06:47, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Photo and how do we get all hooks in one DYK?

edit

We need a strong hook with a great photo. And how do we convince the folks at DYK to use a bunch of bacon hooks in one update? ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:00, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I don't know if they will go for it, but if we make a strong case with 8 solid hooks they might, also I found a picture of a PBB&B sandwich. --kelapstick (talk) 18:02, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Maybe we should post it on the DYK talk page? this almost looks like I took it. It is going to the commons soon. --kelapstick (talk) 18:06, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Will that photo look good small? This one is copyrighted, but they might be willing to change licensing [3]. It's no good for DYK hook, and the last one has a person in it, but otherwise it's very encyclopedic. I can't find much for Pig Day surprisingly. Just [4] and [5] both copyrighted at least for now...
I like the idea of posting a note on the DYK talk page. It should invite anyone who has suggestions on bacon articles or wants to participate and notify the DYK peeps that this project is underway and needs their support. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:28, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hook tweak

edit

I like to have the DYK item first in the hook. What do y'all think about:

... that the peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwich would be New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's choice for his last meal and was a favorite of Elvis? ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:28, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

K-stick are you going to be my hooker for the National Pig Day and Pruess article once they're done? Getting photos for the Pig Day article would be good too, even if it's not the photo hook. ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:28, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I will take a look at them, your modified hook looks good too. --kelapstick (talk) 18:31, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Both are long enough but I think for a proper hook for Joanna Pruess we need an article about Seduced by Bacon: Recipes & Lore about America's Favorite Indulgence. National pig day has no bacon mention, I would prefer all bacon but if we have to we can branch out to pork.--kelapstick (talk) 18:41, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm fairly new round here but volunteering to have a go at Seduced by Bacon. You might get a bit annoyed as I ask stupid questions but it must be better than doing the work yourself, right?! User:Bigger digger/Seduced by Bacon: Recipes & Lore about America's Favorite Indulgence --Bigger digger (talk) 21:33, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Fantastic. Welcome aboard. As far as any questions that you have, ask away. And don't forget to sign in on the main Bacon Challenge page! Don't be shocked/ surprised if star of bacon shows up on your userpage... ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:39, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Excellent...I was just going to make a stub up so that we at least had a wikilink, but if you can make it long enough for a double hook DYK that would be awesome too...glad to see another person joining in the insanity (or Bacon mania), where is Bongo? And I expected to see Lady of Shalott making up at least one article, or is she just hanging around to point out when we make mistakes?--kelapstick (talk) 21:43, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well I'm already suffering from Bacon mania, I've looked at about 150 Google search and news hits, examined about 50 of them and stuck the most relevant into my subpage but I'm a bit concerned that it might fail WP:Notability (books). All the books in Category:Cookbooks (why doesn't a wikilink work here?) have some sort of history or gastronomic respect. I guess comments should be made on the talkpage.
I'm assuming these need to stay in userspace so they don't get ignored by the DYK 5 day rule? Right, it's late, and I need to get to sleep so that I can more quickly achieve the morning bacon sandwich! Bigger digger (talk) 23:26, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Two things, to get the category to work, put a : before the word Category, i.e. [[:Category:Bacon]] gives you Category:Bacon, if you don't it will go to the bottom of the page and this page will be included in that category. Second don't worry about passing Wikipedia:Notability (books), if the book passes the general notability guidelines (in the sense that there is significant coverage in multiple sources) it doesn't have to pass Wikipedia:Notability (books). Stay in user space for now, we will nominate them all at the same time...I guess that is three things...and if you have any questions you can post them here, someone will answer! Good luck. --kelapstick (talk) 23:31, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Potential for expansion

edit

We could throw a non-pork related bacon in just for kicks. Here are two...thoughts?

--kelapstick (talk) 22:01, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Are these legitimate subjects related to bacon? I thought fakon was as far as we could stretch this. Dr., what is your opinion? Is Kelapstick trying to disrupt the Challenge? ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:04, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think there's some humour available in a not-bacon-but-named-after-bacon kind of way, I was thinking of adding a bit of culture here, but Francis Bacon (artist) is pretty well covered. Fortunately:

Are all stubby. Bigger digger (talk) 12:09, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Invitations to participate

I posted a notice on the DYK talk page and notified a few editors who may be interested in participating. Should the challenge be moved out of my userspace and into project space? ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:04, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Excellent, I think the project sits well here.--kelapstick (talk) 22:07, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Elvis and bacon

edit

It turns out there is an existing article on the Elvis sandwich about his version of the peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwich. But it's very short, so I think we're okay. I'm thinking this should be merged with K-stick's, a.k.a. "the troublemaker", sandwich article? The other way to go would be to do a proper article on Elvis's culinary interests. The article would tie together the "Elvis sandwich"/User:Kelapstick/Peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwich and the Fool's Gold Loaf as well as other favorites. It's definitely a notable subject as whole books have been written on it, and it would rope together some bacon entities if anyone is interested. Interestingly the Elvis sandwich article suggests his version of the sandwich is fried... ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:25, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

We are about 500 characters short of a 5x expansion, the old article is 525 and the new is 2096.--kelapstick (talk) 17:30, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
No worries. I'm going to move/ rename that article to Foods of Elvis or something and go from there. Any suggestions on a name? Or if people think that's a bad idea 500 characters will be no problem on something as important as the PBB&B sandwich. Oh and, do you think Turkey bacon is too narrowly focused? What about covering all the bacon alternatives in one article? ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:28, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
You are at 2,397 now, so not much more to go. Simply moving the article won't change that it has to be expanded to +2,625...sooooooo close....
We may have to branch out to Bacon alternatives (include soy etc) or something similar, but my brief search didn't pick up anything to write home about for facon/fakon. The cuisine of Elvis or something similar might be an interesting article.--kelapstick (talk) 20:00, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think a broad article on bacon alternatives would be good, but I leave it to your discretion. On the Elvis sandiwich, no problem. Even with my strict standards for notability and content additions I think I can come up with enough. If someone wants to do a Elvis Foods article that would be very cool and a bacon hook would be no problem. I'm willing to help. ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:16, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Stegt Flaesk

edit

Stegt Flæsk (fried bacon) is a Danish (a.k.a. Denmarkian) dish of fried bacon traditionally served with parsley sauce. It turns out that it is hugely important. It still needs a bit of expansion, but unfortunately my Danish (Denmarkian) isn't what it should be. Can anyone help translate or do they know someone who can translate all the news hits on Google News? I'm also finding interesting websites, like this one http://www.mineslund.dk/stegt-fl%E6sk/, that may or may not be reputable and cite worthy, but it would still be nice to see what it's all about. Lemme know wouldja? Thanks. I will not name the naysayer who suggested that a dish of fried bacon from Denmark wouldn't be notable enough for its own article... ;) ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:13, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

There are also some licensed for commercial creative commons use photos. Are any of these okay to use: [6]. ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:19, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Apologies if this is teaching you to suck eggs, but try http://translate.google.com/ I'm surprised Google haven't integrated it themselves... It won't be perfect but it will let you know what's going on!Bigger digger (talk) 23:59, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bacon (maple?) donut

edit

I think you have a word left out in your first comment about "Danish", unless Stegt Flæsk is actually a pastry...(a bacon pastry, could there be such a thing) I would correct it myself but the last time I tried to correct someone's glaring error (when Mies thought that we had come to enter a foot race with a dead guy, and I confused exorcism with resurrection, I was sternly warned...--kelapstick (talk) 18:44, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Interesting The Elvis is also a bacon-maple-donut...And here with a picture is one in LA, Bacon mania strikes agan?--kelapstick (talk) 18:45, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I am uploading this picture from Portland...this bacon donut thing might be more widespread that originally thought.--kelapstick (talk) 18:51, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

<outdent> That's awesome. I'm starting an article on it. It's worth it just to see the AfD discussion over whether a bacon maple donut (doughnut?) is notable. It actually looks like an area that is grotesquely undercovered on Wikipedia. The main doughnut article doesn't really cover the notable kinds and they are just redirected all over the place. So I'm confident that this effort will have a good outcome even if it's merged somewhere or instigates the development of many doughnut articles. See user:ChildofMidnight/Maple bacon doughtnut ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:51, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think that the maple should be left out, some of the sources I have are maple, some aren't...I have something at User:Kelapstick/Bacon donut with 4 sources, including the bacon donut burger (an excellent category for the Variants section. The picture is from Voodoo Doughnuts. I don't care where the start of the article is stored....so long as it gets made.--kelapstick (talk) 20:03, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oops. I had no idea that you were enough of a lunatic to actually try to write an article on a subject that trivial. I'm missing what the luther burger has to do with the maple bacon donut. It seems like a burger variant rather than a bacon donut variant. I'm not sure on the maple part, but I assume once we boild it down in the sugar house the sap will be sweet and we'll see whether it's essential or not... ChildofMidnight (talk) 20:32, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
The Luther burger is a bacon donut with a burger patty and cheese, no maple...I think it is a variant, besides I don't think the burger is notable enough to stand alone (unless we can dig up more sources), but is enough to be included in a similar article.--kelapstick (talk) 20:34, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Looking back it exists already....how did we miss it? I added the content from the bacon maple to it, since that is where it belongs...you may want to remove it and add it as a see also in maple bacon donut.--kelapstick (talk) 20:35, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
It uses a "grilled glazed donut" as the bun for a bacon cheeseburger. That's a pretty loose connection to a bacon (maple?) donut. I like Shubs listing, but I'm not sure they are notable enough for independent articles as they are variants on existing article subjects. Is there an article on sour cream and onion potato chips? I think a broader bacon in popular culture or bacon foods article might be the way to handle these tidbits. Thoughts? ChildofMidnight (talk) 20:55, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
What I meant was take out the variant section from maple bacon donut (since I already moved it to Luther Burger anyway) in a see also section on maple bacon donut have luther burger, unless both having bacon and donuts are not enough of a connection to include in a see also section...really how many foods combine the two products, that is about as close a connection as you can get in my opinion, the only thing that chicken fried bacon and bacon explosion have in common is bacon, and they see also each other....can I get any more commas in that sentence?--kelapstick (talk) 21:05, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Way up at the beginning of this section is a comment about bacon pastry. In the UK there's a chain called Gregg's the Bakers that does a great pastry-wrapped-around-bacon snack. Like a sausage roll, only tastier and fatter! Bigger digger (talk) 01:50, 15 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm all for it, but it seems to be called a sausage roll. I find the bacon butty/ saager, sarnie interesting though. But it seems to be covered. ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:37, 15 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Template

edit

Maybe we should make a specialized template for the article's talk pages. ie. "This article was feature on the DYK column on (date) as part of the Bacon challenge.". Acebulf (talk) 00:04, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

That would be cool. The "Bacon challenge 2009" part could link to the challenge page. And if anyone thinks this year's article subjects are stretching it, just wait until next year! Kelapstick is a master of trivial template making. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:44, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I never thought about it. If bacon challenge 2009 takes 8 bacon articles, there's 8 less articles for next year. We'll have to really stretch it. I never thought there would be this much bacon articles though. Acebulf (talk) 22:46, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bacon type pig?

edit

What is a bacon-type pig...I think you are stretching it...--kelapstick (talk) 23:49, 26 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Surprisingly, it wasn't that easy to find a source that included the word bacon in relation to a miniature pig. That's the wording the source used. I have no idea what it means and I'm always happy to guess or put my own interpretation on it. I also put up a very reasonable alt hook that I think is probably supported by the bacon-type statement, but the discussion of mini-pigs for pets and for organ transplants and medical research was grotesquely biased against the food. Perhaps a google news search for miniature pig bacon is in order. And of course it raises a very interesting question: Do miniature pigs produce miniature bacon? ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:21, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Combined hooks

edit

Would it be more powerful to combine the hooks for the Mitch Morgan and Bacon martini? LadyofShalott 00:31, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, thanks to my dedication, haha, you can use bacon vodka in your articles about bacon drinks! Law type! snype? 02:21, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
You mean you're not going to expand that to full DYK length? Gentleman Jack is new too. It could possibly be worked in (unless someone can find a bacon connection in which case it should be added as a hook all on its own). It needs to be expanded a bit too. Quit standing around. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:35, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I hate double noms. Please don't encourage Kelapstick. He loves getting half as many awards and stringing hooks together in a way that eliminates the opportunity for a record breaking bacon explosion (over 40,000 hits!!!) type effort. If we seperated Joanna Pruess and her book (Seduced by Bacon we could almost get two complete updates with 100% pure bacon goodness. Shallots, don't tell me you're Canadian too? What is it with you guys and these half orders and plate sharing divying up of the bacon? Outrageous! Make mine a double. And pass the salt. ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:26, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Whatever <shrug>, and, no, I'm not Canadian. LadyofShalott 02:30, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Haha. I actually knew you weren't Canadian. You're from down in Doc's neck of the woods as I recall. Can we tie in Connie Bea Hope, Woman's World (TV), Estelle Payton and Virginia Greer somehow? They're mostly new (except for Hope which is struggling to survive at AfD). Although I don't think the Payton, Woman's World, or Greer articles are long enough for a hook of their own and I haven't yet found a bacon connection, but one can dream. ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:38, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sometimes all it takes is a little prayer. See WKRG's bacon wrapped meatloaf recipe/ video. How it all ties in I have no idea. But it's beautiful. ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:44, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Still time for more articles!!!

Divying up the bacon

edit

There is a discussion at WT:DYK about whether the bacon hooks should run together in a DYK update or be split up and spread out over time. I think we know where the Canadians and the spring onions stand on splitting up the bacon... ;) Or is it that they like to merge the bacon pieces together? Hmmm... ChildofMidnight (talk) 16:38, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hey, how can you object to a larger piece of bacon? LadyofShalott 18:56, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'd rather see them all at once. Acebulf (talk) 20:34, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I like loads of bacon and I like bacon all the time, so I guess I win either way... Although obviously my !vote is for the US solution! Bigger digger (talk) 22:17, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
With ketchup on a McBacondoublecheeseburger? Speaking of bacon, can anyone confirm this [7]? Thirty minutes left. Then it will all be about March 1, 2010!!! ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:30, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Lardish flavours? Interesting. I am not a fan of the split up of the DYKs, I also don't think we should split them up so we won't upset animal rights activists and vegetarians. We already covered people who don't eat pork with turkey bacon, maybe facon was necessary...--kelapstick (talk) 23:34, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

THANKS EVERYONE!!!

edit

There's still work to be done, but no new articles will be accepted for the 2009 Bacon Challenge. Thanks very much to everyone who participated. I had a lot of fun and I learned a lot about a fairly broad range of interesting topics. An "awful" lot of bacon was served up and I'm very proud and happy with the effort. Anyone who wants to prepare the hooks en masse or to start putting them up one by one is welcome to it. I suggest adding some kind of disclaimer at the top and bottom of the section on why they are grouped together. It seems from the discussion at DYK that an update of all bacon hook may not be in the cards. But I think spreading out the bacon will be cool anyway. Feel free to add to the discussion there if you want. Thanks again to everyone! Keep improving the articles and adding photos. If they are split up we can have lots of photo hooks :). ChildofMidnight (talk) 01:11, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Merger?

edit

OK, I know this suggestion probably isn't going to be very popular here, but reading bacon vodka and bacon martini, I don't really see a need for separate articles. One is barely a subset of the other. Maybe once the DYK business is over, these two articles could be merged? LadyofShalott 01:22, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Outrageous! :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 05:53, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Having looked at the articles, I think the case for a merger is weak. If anything the bacon martini would be merged to martini and bacon vodka to vodka. They should be mentioned in the broader article subjects, if they aren't already, but much more than that would be undue weight. I think there's enough notability for stand alone articles, despite what common sense suggests, and rules are rules. Even more so when they favor additional articles on bacon subjects, which as I understand them, they inherently do. ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:20, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

DYK noms

edit

Do we draw straws for who puts up the DYK noms, or can we arrange for a round robbin rock paper scissors tournament? ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:24, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Interestingly enough, I was thinking short straw has to do it. But you are suggesting it's a desirable talk as it earns multiple DYK nom credits?
Thusly, in the spirit of your positive outlook, I hereby nominate and endorse you as the winner!!! Make sure to include photos. The version of the hooks on the DYK talk page is pretty recent. I would just copy it en masse, and then try to divy the hooks up into individual noms with the proper formatting so they're blocked together (or do they have to be done one by one for some reason?). Congratulations! I'm sure others will help/ weigh in if you mess up. ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:34, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
There should be no problem copying and pasting multiple nominations en masse, but I think the templates should be posted here first before they are copied to be checked by a second set of eyes to ensure accuracy (example multiple editors on the same article). Don't forget to use <nowki> markup as if you don't it will substitute the template.--kelapstick (talk) 22:39, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Against Kelapstick's sound advice I went ahead and did a bulk post of the noms. Please have a look and make sure that they are attributed correctly and include the photos and any other information that they are supposed to. I didn't take credit as nom, but I should. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:25, 29 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well done

edit

The DYK stats show a strong performance for bacon in May (one photo hook in top rankings) and June (three photo hooks in top rankings) [8]. Congrats to the big winners, and of course all the non-photo-hook articles that helped exapnd the world's knowledge on this most important of subjects. We've done a lot to combat ignorance one bacon article at a time. ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:09, 23 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
