Rationale & Background

Many of engineering concepts were invented by Western scientists. So, the fact is many of the engineering concepts are in English. Countries like India, China, Japan etc., has their own languages. They have been taught in their mother tongue from their school days. So, doing engineering in English is not an easy job for them. In India there are several languages like Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam etc., In China there is only Mandarin. In Japan there is Japanese only. So it is somewhat hard to the students of these like countries to absorb the concepts in English. So they must learn English. TN legislation, AICTE acceptance. --> dig sources and expand.

Current Scenario

For more than two centuries engineering has been taught in English in India. But in 2010 Anna University Chennai became the first institution in India to introduce Tamil as medium of instruction in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering courses; Also inducted the same in counseling. This was introduced in view of commemorating the Classical World Tamil Conference held in Coimbatore in June 2010.

The Tamil medium engineering has been started in one of the departments of Chennai Anna University and one of the prestigious engineering college around the world College of Engineering Guindy also known as CEG. And also in the campuses of Anna University (University Colleges) located in Thindivanam, Ariyaloor, Ramanathapuram, Thirukkuvalai, Panrutti, Pattukkottai, Dhindukal, Nagarkovil, Thoothukkudi, Arani. Trichy Anna University (Branch of Chennai Anna University) also came into the list by starting it.
