"Iris (Hold Me Close)" is a song by Irish rock band U2. It is the fifth track from their thirteenth studio album, Songs of Innocence. It was produced by Paul Epworth and Ryan Tedder. Bono wrote the song about his mother who died when he was 14 years old. The Rolling Stone Magazine described the song as "The most emotionally raw song on the album." Unlike the songs "I Will Follow" and "Tomorrow", that also are about Bono's mother, Iris Hewson; "Iris (Hold Me Close)" is written from the point of view of a man in his fifties who is looking back at his mother who has been gone for forty years. It is a song about how Bono's loss has shaped his life.[1]

The set's video screen shows old home video footage of her intercut with visuals of stars, matching the song's lyrics that liken her influence on Bono over the years to the light of a long-dead star.[2][3]
