Horse and Hounds is the ninth byway in the Maryland Scenic Byways program, which takes travelers around scenic Baltimore County, through areas known for Thoroughbred horse farms and fox hunting. The byway begins east of Interstate 83 on Maryland Route 45, and heads west trhough Shawan and Worthington Valley, before turning north through a series of roadways until just before the border with Carroll County. Here, the byway heads east again through Whitehouse and crosses I-83 again before entering Hereford.

The byway splits in Monkton, with one branch heading north on Maryland Route 138 through the unincorporated areas of Shepperd, Blackhorse, Madonna, and Hess. The other branch travels to the southeast through Manor before meeting back up with the northerly branch and then proceeding southwesterly through Jacksonville and Sunnybrook. The final leg of the main byway crosses through several county roads before ending at Interstate 695 outside of the Baltimore city limits.
