Gorichanaz, September 2016

Charlie Gorichanaz is an American software developer and blogger interested in science and technology, health and government.

Early life edit

Charles Nicholas Gorichanaz was born June 2, 1988, to Michael and Sandra. He lived in Sussex, Wisconsin, for several years, until his family moved to a larger house on 10 acres of land in nearby Colgate. His parents divorced when he was eight, after which he lived primarily with his mother in Kewaskum and then Germantown pending construction of her new house in Farmington, outside West Bend. His father purchased a small home in Hubertus, near Gorichanaz’s school at the time.

Education edit

Gorichanaz attended the local St. Hubert Catholic School (Hubertus, Wis.) from kindergarten through eighth grade. The school population was roughly 160 to 180 with most grades having less than 20 students. He graduated in June 2002 as part of the last class of St. Hubert School, which changed its name to St. Gabriel July 1, 2002, in a merger with St. Columba of Colgate and St. Mary of Richfield.[1][2]

He then attended Hartford Union High School (Hartford, Wis.) from September 2002 and graduated June 11, 2006. Aside from working at his mother's stores, he was active in the school's Gay-Straight Alliance and argued at school board meetings for the students' right to participate in the Day of Silence, a civil protest against discrimination.[3] Gorichanaz placed 24th in a class of 390 with a 3.93 GPA.

After deciding somewhat on a whim to apply to his state's flagship university toward the end of the application period, Gorichanaz was accepted into the College of Letters and Science at the University of Wisconsin–Madison for fall 2006. He did not have specific career aspirations at the time but was interested in the sciences. Before classes began, he considered a pharmacy track but decided instead to follow a generic medicine track. He was also accepted into the Wisconsin International Scholars (WISc) Program. He was awarded $21,000 in scholarships, mostly from Northwestern Mutual, and he took out roughly $40,000 in federally subsidized loans. He paid for the remainder of his college expenses through year round full time work. Gorichanaz graduated in fall 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry.

Career edit

At age 10, Gorichanaz began cashiering and stocking at his mother's new retail store in West Bend, Wisconsin, and also in Menomonee Falls when she opened a second location the next year. He became more involved over the next few years, even traveling alone to Canada to purchase merchandise for upcoming seasons and attending various trade shows. Once he could legally drive at age 16, he added nightly closing of both stores to his list of duties. Due to a combination of an economic downturn and Gorichanaz's upcoming move to Madison for college, his mother closed the stores in summer 2006.

Shortly after starting college courses, Gorichanaz got a job at the largest of the school's independent student student newspapers, The Badger Herald. He worked in the web department as an associate for one year and then as the director of the department until he graduated in fall 2010.

During his tenure at the Herald, Gorichanaz also worked for the university as a technical assistant and for several years in the biochemistry laboratory of Hector DeLuca studying treatment of diabetes in mice with a Vitamin D analog.[4]

After graduation, Gorichanaz worked remotely as a web developer for a digital services company. In January 2014, he became a product manager for Movable Type at Six Apart in Tokyo. Due to company reorganization, he returned to America in early 2015 to rejoin his previous company in a new product management role. Extensive delays in the transition caused him to leave the company at the end of that year.

Gorichanaz enjoyed taking off work the following year, his first time not working since 18 years prior.

Personal life edit

Gorichanaz enjoys running, programming and photography, as well as writing for his personal blog. He attended Burning Man annually 2013 through 2016.
