Hello, welcome to your Counter Vandalism Unit Academy page! Every person I instruct will have their own page on which I will give them support and tasks for them to complete. Please make sure you have this page added to your watchlist. Your NPP School page has been specifically designed according to you and what you have requested instruction in - for that reason, please be as specific as possible when under my instruction, so that I know the best ways to help you (and do not be afraid to let me know if you think something isn't working).

Make sure you read through Wikipedia:Notability as that's the knowledge which most of the questions I ask you and tasks you do will revolve around.

How to use this page

This page will be built up over your time in the Academy, with new sections being added as you complete old ones. Each section will end with a task, written in bold type - this might just ask a question, or it might require you to go and do something. You can answer a question by typing the answer below the task; if you have to do something, you will need to provide diffs to demonstrate that you have completed the task. Some sections will have more than one task, sometimes additional tasks may be added to a section as you complete them. Please always sign your responses to tasks as you would on a talk page.

Notability edit

When patrolling or reviewing an article, you may often come across articles do not meet the WP:N guidelines, but the editors make the edits in good faith. Please read WP:AGF and do not WP:BITE the new editors.

A. Notability is a test guidelines to decide whether a given topic warrants its own article in Wikipedia mainspace. Please read Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, General Notability Guidelines, Specific Notability Guidelines, Stand-alone list before completing the following tasks.

1. In your own words, why it is important to WP:AGF and not WP:BITE new editors.

Answer: Wikipedia articles are improved through the hard work of both regular editors and newcomers. Assuming that editors' edits and comments are made in good faith, is one of the fundamental principles of Wikipedia. Everyone makes mistakes, both behavioural (such as personal attacks) and content-based (such as adding original research). Behaviours arising from these perspectives, while possibly misguided, are usually not malicious and should not be treated as such. It is important to be patient with newcomers, who will be unfamiliar with Wikipedia's culture and rules but may nonetheless turn out to be valuable contributors. New members are prospective contributors and are therefore Wikipedia's most valuable resource. We must treat newcomers with kindness and patience. It is very unlikely for a newcomer to be completely familiar with Wikipedia's markup language and its myriad of policies, guidelines, and community standards when they start editing. Most of the time, we can correct such mistakes with simple reminders. By helping newcomers, we can increase the range of knowledge, perspectives, and ideas on Wikipedia, thereby preserving its neutrality and integrity as a resource and ultimately increasing its value. That's why it is important to assume good faith and not bite new editors.

2. In your own words, how does notability is defined in Wikipedia?

Answer: Notability is a test used by editors to decide whether a given topic warrants its own article or not. Wikipedia's concept of notability applies some basic guidelines to avoid indiscriminate inclusion of topics. Not everything can have its own dedicated article, in Wikipedia.

For a topic to be notable for an article(or list) in Wikipedia,

Y I think you meant "* It meets either the general notability guidelines or SSN for Wikipedia on point 2 above.
In Wikipedia, notability means "worthy to be noted" - it is defined as a topic is "presumably" notable for stand-alone article or list (1) if it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject whee by the sources talk about the subject directly in depth and in length and not only passing mentioned and (2) it is not excluded under the What WP:Wikipedia is not policy.[

3. Does a step by step instructions on how to "Change a car tire" considered a notable topic in Wikipedia?

Answer: Although this topic has significant coverage on many well known independent and reliable sources, it is not notable enough to have an article on Wikipedia. Step by step instructions on how to "Change a car tire" may be notable enough for a guide book, but Wikipedia is not a guidebook.

 Y. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 03:14, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

4. What are the differences between A WP:GNG and a specific notability guidelines? how do we determine which one to use when patrolling an article?

Answer: Wikipedia articles cover notable topics—those that have gained sufficiently significant attention by the world at large and over a period of time, and are not outside the scope of Wikipedia.

Y, Both guidelines can be followed. Usually, if the subject meets SNG, it usually meets GNG. However, if a subject doesnt meet SNG (say female model) but gain so much news attention due the fact she just doing nothing much but present functions and events and people just like to see or talk about her (like Paris Houston in the beginning before she start in Simple life), She would have not have passed WP:MUSICBIO (she had one album/single) but would have passed GNG or ANYBIO notability guidelines due to she was worthy to be noted by by significant coverage in depth independent, reliable published sources. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 03:14, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

5. If an editor creates an article about "2024 Summer Olympics" in 2019 without providing any sources, is the subject considered not notable and why?

Answer: As there is no source provided, there is no chance that the article should be considered as notable. However I think, the article should exist as it has got significant discussions on reliable individual sources, that others can include. The article should exist, significantly improving and expanding over the course of time.

 Y. For such an event, it has been historically the event will be held in the near future (Not 2044 Summer Olympics - as it is way to far from today date). I would usually look for sources and add them in and get it pass the GNG which patrolling. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 03:14, 5 October 2019 (UTC)
B. Without considered of sources/content policies and review just based on "subject specific notability" (SSN) "alone" for sake of the exercises below, please answer if the subject meets the SSN guidelines, based on the given content below, and specify under (1) which notability criteria they meet or fail (example - MUSICBI#1 if certain sub set of criteria is applicable) and (2) reasons/explanations.

6. A New York city based 2019 start up software company , specializing in data mining, has just received a USD 200K investor fund.

Answer: Fails WP:ORGDEPTH. The fact that a startup company has found investors doesn't mean it is notable enough to have an article. Even if it has independent and reliable sourcing, it is not significant enough.

 Y. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 03:14, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

7. Maycee Barber who is a female Ultimate Fighting Championships fighters with the undefeated mixed martial arts record of 7-0 and she is currently ranked #12 in the women's flyweight division.

Answer: Fails WP:NMMA, from the source we find out that she has been only in two UFC fights and needs another UFC to be notable.

 Y. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 03:14, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

8. A upcoming action drama title "Suleiman the Great" based on the the life of Suleiman the Magnificent, was reported will be in production in December 2019 and to be released on August 2020 in the cinemas.

Answer: Fails WP:NF, the film production hasn't started to verify it's notability.

 Y. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 03:14, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

9. A political candidates, without any previous or current political position, who is running for November 2019 election for a Senator position in United States with multiple local newspapers coverage of his candidacy.

Answer: Fails WP:NPOL, as he is getting his candidature for the first time and has no political background.

 Y. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 03:14, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

10. A singer who self produced his first album in May 2019 and his songs are listed in Spotify.

Answer: Fails WP:SINGER, being on Spotify doesn't make someone notable.

 Y. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 03:14, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

C. Based on which SSN guidelines the below subjects are notable under (1) which notability criteriaMUSICBI#1 (if certain sub set of criteria is applicable) and (2) reasons/explanations.

11. Carlos Alós-Ferrer

Answer: Meets WP:PROF. He is the chief editor of a major well-established academic journal, "Journal of Economic Psychology".

 Y. Do provide which criteria next time if applicable. Not only meets WP:NPROF #1 [1] and #8 for chief editor of Journal of Economic Psychology. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 03:14, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

12. Alistair Overeem

Answer: Meets both WP:NMMA and WP:NKICK. He is one of only two fighters to hold world titles in both MMA and K-1 kickboxing at the same time.

 Y. Good. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 03:14, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

13. Jennifer Lopez

Answer: Meets both WP:SINGER and WP:ENT. She was nominated for Grammy Awards and is also the highest-paid Latin actress featuring in many films like Anaconda(1997).

 Y. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 03:14, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

14. Three Mile Island accident

Answer: Meets many criteria under WP:EVENT such as WP:EFFECT, WP:GEOSCOPE and WP:PERSISTENCE. This accident gave rise to a huge amount of anti-nuclear protest.

 Y. Good. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 03:14, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

15. Persepolis

Answer: Meets WP:NGEO. Being the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire, it is UNESCO declared heritage site.
