br tags in values appear to be causing span tag problems edit

After the most recent change, it appears that   tags within values are causing span tags to be misinterpreted by the parser. This is happening at 1992–93 South Pacific cyclone season, where the span tag is expanded as follows:

<span style="display:none;" data-tcse-entry='{"damages":"110000000","deaths":"26","dissipated":"January 5, 1993","page":"Cyclone Nina","pressure":"960","name":"Nina","winds":"75","category":"Aus3","formed":"January 1, 1993","affected":"Queensland, Solomon Islands Wallis and Futuna, Rotuma, Tonga"}'>

When that is rendered on the page, it looks like this:
