Template talk:Sidebar person

Compatibility

edit

@Zackmann08: Thanks for creating this generic sidebar, as probably inspired by my former work on {{Sidebar/US President}}. I noticed a discrepancy in parameter names, whereby you used underscores when I had used hyphens. This resulted in loss of custom signature size, e.g. in {{George W. Bush series}}. I have applied a fix, by accepting both {{{sig_size}}} and |sig-size= for US presidents. [1] That's faster than amending all individual sidebars.

I also restored a feature whereby the signature is excluded from a President's main biography page, where it is already displayed in the infobox.[2] You may want to apply the same logic to all person sidebars.

On a purely aesthetic note, I feel that your chosen default widths of 90px for signatures and 40px for seals are exceedingly small. We have been using 150px and 60px for presidents, which fits most cases well. Signatures which appear too large because of a different aspect ratio can be reduced individually. — JFG talk 12:01, 22 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Per this discussion citing MOS:PDI, I have removed the link and alt text on the seal that appears in presidents' sidebars. By the same token, perhaps we should remove the link on signatures in this generic template. We could keep the alt text "person's signature" because it's informative, but the link is pointless. Opinions? — JFG talk 07:21, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

The purpose of the box seems to be navigation — links to related articles. There aren't any articles about any specific person's signature at Category:Signature, so I assume none exist. Since there's no useful link to be made of the signature, I'd call the image a decorative repeat of the person's name, and better kept silent. Matt Fitzpatrick (talk) 06:14, 26 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Portrait renders incorrectly on Firefox v83.0 (64 bit) on Windows 10

edit

I started a discussion over at Village pump (technical) for this as well. Can someone please take a look and figure out if this can be fixed - assuming that Firefox itself is not buggy. Ujwal.Xankill3r (talk) 10:50, 12 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Signatures

edit

This might be a wider issue than this one talk page (maybe an RFC at the Village Pump or the like?), but possibly controversial suggestion: perhaps the signature parameter should be removed? As long as the parameter is there, well-meaning editors who feel like this is some standard, recommended list of everything will continue to add signatures back. But... signatures are basically a waste of space. If there's a desire for a decorative, identifying element, then use a picture or portrait. I feel like it's very difficult to maintain discipline in these sidebars to prevent bloat where too much stuff is added; signatures are a case of unusually low value-add combined with lots of screen real estate. We'd be better off deprecating them. Any thoughts, if anyone is watching this talk page? SnowFire (talk) 05:48, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Qualified title

edit

Is there any way to link to a person with a qualified title? Template:Eric Johnson sidebar is linking to dab Eric Johnson but should lead to Eric Johnson (Texas politician). I've tried all the usual dodges like |person=Eric Johnson (Texas politician){{!}}Eric Johnson. See also Template:Jim Strickland sidebar for Jim Strickland (politician). Hi Certes, I've edited the template so that simply typing the article title with the parentheses included will render the name normally and link to the intended page. ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 15:21, 20 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Please apply class=skin-invert-image to the signature, each signature is probably either a SVG with black elements or better readable if inverted. If either is not the case, said image should probably not be used in that slot. Thanks, but you could have added it just after the "notpageimage" part. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 10:30, 17 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
