"British" revisited
Quoting Wikipedia talk:WikiProject England/Archive 3#British, English, etc, in descriptions, categories, etc (2012-05-17):
- One good example category: Category:British children's writers now contains 227 articles --almost all biographies of what is says-- while its English, Scottish, and Welsh subcategories contain 434, 37, and 19 articles. If I tool correctly (Combine wiki-Categories), 19, 1, and 10(!) of the latter overlap with the British.
- — Thus about 200 of about 700 are categorized as British rather than English, etc. -P64

notes done to two users
- Comment It is clear that the illustrator rather than the writer of the text is the primary winner (quoting the home page): "awarded annually ... to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children." As we say (where I may have selected the internal quotation): The Medal is "for distinguished illustrations in a picture book and for excellence of pictorial presentation for children". ... Components other than illustration should be considered as they bear on effectiveness as a children's picture book.[5]
- Of course the quality of the text contributes to the effect of the book. But that is true of illustrated novels that win literary awards. C.S. Lewis received the Carnegie Medal for The Last Battle, which concluded the Narnia series, but (quoting our article simply): The author wrote to illustrator Baynes, "is it not rather 'our' medal? I'm sure the illustrations were taken into account as well as the text."[5]
- For what it's worth I believe we have generally been right to rename categories so that writers and illustrators, even publishers and translators, are award winners and books are award-winning works. --and hate to see another copy of every page saved in order to insert a hyphen P64 (talk) 18:24, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

- @ +/- re-score with three points for a win
Selecting 8 of 16 teams (Women, 1999/2003/07/11), all ties relevant to break are in-group ties for second (t2) — no ties for third (t3) or cross-group ties (x). Contrast selecting 8 of 12 (W 1991/95) or 16 of 24 (W 2015) – boldface.
The "min/max" has been 4/4 under the former conditions 3/3 under the latter with three points for a win.
- 2015
Eight teams did not win a game; seven were eliminated while Sweden advanced with three draws, Thailand out with one win. Nine teams were outscored in sum; eight were eliminated while South Korea advanced in a group where three were outscored.
Among USA-Can, Europe, and AU-NZ (12 teams from Europe and the British colonies), 10 advanced while Spain and New Zealand missed by one goal (as did Costa Rica, and perhaps others in earlier games). Elsewhere JAP, BRA, COL, CAM qualified easily with some margin, CHI and KOR barely (indeed, penalty kicks on ghastly and questionable calls).
- 1991
The first W tournament comprised 12 teams including 7 from Europe and the British colonies, of which USA and 5 Euros qualified and New Zealand was outclassed. Elsewhere two of five teams qualified --China PR and China Taipei, playing in southern China. Five teams were outscored, all outclassed (-6 at best), of which China Taipei qualified. Brazil won one game and were eliminated.
- 1995
8 from Europe and the British colonies of which USA and 5 Euros qualified, Canada and Australia outclassed. Five teams were outscored, of which Japan qualified (-2). Brazil won one game and were eliminated.

Average 0.96 draws per group of 4, under 3 points for a win from 1994, implies 17.04 points per group; and 0.96 draws per six games or draw rate 16%. Only in 2015 the Women's draw rate is comparable to the Men's draw rate for the entire period.
In quarterfinal and later games --8 per tournament, 56 games in all-- only one has been decided "after extra time" (2015 third place), seven in penalty kicks. That is 8 draws after 90 minutes (14.3%), 7 draws after 120 minutes (12.5%).

Ursula K. Le Guin, Cheek by Jowl: talks & essays on how & why fantasy matters (Aqueduct Press, 2009), ISBN 978-1-933500-27-0
She recalls being told, probably by Schein:
- "don't worry about the vocabulary and the audience and all that: all a novel has to do to be Young Adult is have a protagonist over twelve and under twenty." (111/12)
- "When I was in my teens, I certainly didn't feel that in order to interest me a book had to be about teenagers. I got enough of them at school ... I wanted to know about being grown up: and novels offered a chance to find out what that was like from the inside. Kittens playing are playing cat. ... The rule that the YA book should be about young adults may apply chiefly to the realistic novel about contemporary teen-age life and problems and to historical novels. ... Fantasy appeals to kids even earlier than the other genres, but much genre literature is like fantasy in this: once you're old enough to read it, it doesn't matter how old you or the characters are. Nine to ninety, as they say.
- I suspect this whole talk has been an attempt to justify myself to myself for continuing the Young Adult trilogy of Earthsea with a trilogy of Old Adult Earthsea." (121/22)

You would bid 4H with this hand, for example: T8743 JT875 K3 7.
Postmortem: Because you have splinters available for many of your shapely hands [or perhaps fit jump in strong 5+ side suit], perhaps 2S [cue] should show a maximum with five-card support like this: 53 KT763 AKJ9 94. [Note, 53 KT76 AKJ93 94 would be a maximum textbook fit jump.]

editLead sections of English Wikipedia biographies 2015-04-16:
Daniel of Moscow
Daniil Aleksandrovich (Даниил Александрович in Russian) (1261 – 4 March 1303) was the youngest [4th] son of Alexander Nevsky and forefather of all the Grand Princes of Moscow.
Ivan III of Russia (Ivan the Great)
Ivan III Vasilyevich (Russian: Иван III Васильевич) (22 January 1440, Moscow – 27 October 1505, Moscow), also known as Ivan the Great,[1][2] was a Grand Prince of Moscow and Grand Prince of all Rus (Великий князь всея Руси). Sometimes referred to as the "gatherer of the Russian lands", he tripled the territory of his state, ended the dominance of the Golden Horde over the Rus, renovated the Moscow Kremlin, and laid the foundations of the Russian state. He was one of the longest-reigning Russian rulers in history.
Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV)
Ivan IV Vasilyevich (Russian: Ива́н Васи́льевич, tr. Ivan Vasilevich; 25 August 1530 – 28 March [O.S. 18 March] 1584),[1] commonly known as Ivan the Terrible (Russian: About this sound Ива́н Гро́зный (help·info), Ivan Grozny literally "Ivan the Formidable"), was the Grand Prince of Moscow from 1533 to 1547 and Tsar of All the Russias from 1547 until his death. His long reign saw the conquest of the Khanates of Kazan, Astrakhan and Siberia, transforming Russia into a multiethnic and multiconfessional state spanning almost one billion acres, approximately 4,046,856 km2 (1,562,500 sq mi). Ivan managed countless changes in the progression from a medieval state to an empire and emerging regional power, and became the first ruler to be crowned as Tsar of All the Russias.
Historic sources present disparate accounts of Ivan's complex personality: he was described as intelligent and devout, yet given to rages and prone to episodic outbreaks of mental illness[2] that increased with his age, affecting his reign.[3][4] In one such outburst, he killed his groomed and chosen heir Ivan Ivanovich. This left the Tsardom to be passed to Ivan's younger son, the weak and intellectually disabled Feodor Ivanovich. Ivan's legacy is complex: he was an able diplomat, a patron of arts and trade, founder of Russia's first Print Yard, a leader highly popular among the common people of Russia, but he is also remembered for his paranoia and arguably harsh treatment of the nobility. The Massacre of Novgorod is regarded as one of the demonstrations of his mental instability and brutality.[5]

{{gcb}} inside parentheses, brackets and braces
editand that resolution breaks the illustrations in this section -P64 2015-01-06
{{gcb|deal}}
displays deal({{gcb|deal}})
displays (deal)[{{gcb|deal}}]
displays [[[Glossary of contract bridge terms#deal |deal]]]{{{gcb|deal}}}
displays deal
I can live without brackets and braces, which are merely icing on the cake, but parentheses are useful. It's the same result if the third parameter is included:
({{gcb|deal|deals}})
displays (deals)
If there is a way of suppressing the unwanted space, I couldn't find it. Narky Blert (talk) 16:30, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
- How about
{{gcb|deal|(deal)}}
. It displays (deal) - Newwhist (talk) 18:14, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
- How about
- That also works for brackets:
{{gcb|deal|[deal]}}
displays [deal]
- and brackets can be useful when explaining something in a quote (e.g. the obsolete use of "bid" to mean "contract"). It doesn't work for braces of course, but so what? Perhaps not perfect typesetting, but certainly good enough! (I've changed the section title to something more descriptive, in case anyone else ever has the same query.) - That also works for brackets:
- The leading space that was unwanted (we agree) was specified in the template code by a space following the crucial pipe. I revised the template by deleting that one character and the display no longer includes a leading space.
- (This fixes the problem as we knew it and necessarily breaks those illustrations of the problem within this section.) --P64 (talk) 21:36, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
P.S. For braces, {{gcb|deal|<nowiki>{deal}}}</nowiki>
- --if you know what I mean, which is that the pair of braces immediately preceding and following 'deal' are separately enclosed within nowiki–/nowiki tags (which differs from what you see, interpreting the first /nowiki tag as closing the first nowiki tag, if you know what I mean)--
displays {deal}. --P64 (talk) 21:51, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
