This would probably look better at a font-size of around 90%. My understandign of WP table syntax isn't up to it though. Midgley 10:50, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Autism and the Autistic spectrum disorders (ASD)

edit

First of all, this is many developmental or "autistic" disorders that falls underneath a spectrum -- not specifically, Autism.
I was almost positive though, that their was a separate wiki article for ASD, but this time it re-directed me to the Autism article.
Anyway, it also, has not been announced official weather it should be called, "Autism spectrum" (Autistic spectrum disorder) or "Pervasive developmental disorders," so it should be continued to be titled, "Pervasive Developmental Disorders/ Autistic spectrum disorders" (or if someone decides to takes out the disorder part of ASD, it doesn't matter, since their is two ways of identifying it).

Early childhood intervention

edit

This edit added a new group "Early childhood intervention" containing a large number of treatments, ranging from Applied behavior analysis to Vitamin B12. I don't think this group is appropriate here. It contained many extremely dubious therapies such as Chelation therapy and Hug machine which have no scientific basis. Furthermore, it omitted many other therapies, just as unsupported or experimental, such as Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, packing, cannabis, stem cell therapy, etc. Also, the therapies in question are not necessarily early childhood interventions: many are given to older children, to adolescents, and even to adults. Finally, limiting ourselves to "approved" therapies would be difficult, and listing all therapies would make the template way too large. The template already links to Autism therapies and I think that may be the best we can do. Eubulides (talk) 05:50, 3 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Template size

edit

This template contains several entries such as Judge Rotenberg Educational Center that are only marginally related to the topic of pervasive developmental disorders. It's becoming time to trim the article to only the closely related stuff. Eubulides (talk) 08:21, 4 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think most of the material is appropriate. What did you have in mind? Whatever404 (talk) 16:52, 10 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
The material would perhaps be appropriate if the goal is to generate a box so large that it won't fit on many users' screens. But it's not appropriate for the typical Wikipedia usage, where the box is supposed to help people navigate among articles that are key to the understanding of pervasive developmental disorders. I suggest removing about two-thirds of the entries, to get the box down to a manageable (albeit still quite large) size. Examples of entries that obviously should be removed include Judge Rotenberg Educational Center, Sensory defensiveness, and Autistic enterocolitis. Also, there should be entries for the autism rights movement and the autism cure movement, but there is no need in this template to mention every little group out there. There must be hundreds of autism-related groups and we cannot possibly accommodate them all here. Eubulides (talk) 17:19, 10 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps you're using a lower screen resolution than I am; the box looks very small and tidy on my screen. Can you post a version of the box as you'd like it to look, or make a list of what is kept and what is removed? Whatever404 (talk) 10:41, 19 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia articles have to be portable to devices such as netbooks that have fairly low resolution. Plus, regardless of screen size, articles such as Asperger disorder should not be linking to minor and irrelevant pages such as Karen McCarron. Instead, the navbox should be tightly focused on important aspects of pervasive developmental disorders. Secondary and less-relevant pages can be linked to indirectly via List of autism-related topics etc. Anyway, here's a draft:

I think the recent revision goes too far in the direction of "trimming". I would like to discuss this further (when I have more time). Whatever404 (talk) 22:01, 25 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Additional information?

edit

Is it possible to add addition information for:

  • therapies
  • associations
  • other articles that might assist in learning how to manage autism?

Or, is it a standard format for disorders?--CaroleHenson (talk) 23:29, 5 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I went ahead and started one, see below. There are so many orphaned articles about autism, this will help that - and hopefully make it easier for folks to navigate a bit. I hope you like it. Of course it can be modified to different sections, etc. as needed.

Masking & burnout

edit

I would like to add autistic masking and autistic burnout to the template. However, the concepts are neither diagnoses, nor related conditions, nor related issues. Any suggestions on where to add them or how to name a new category?--TempusTacet (talk) 17:25, 9 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Autistic catatonia is another candidate for inclusion in the template. How about Associated conditions & phenomena as the name of the new category?--TempusTacet (talk) 10:35, 10 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
