Merged ann template

I have recently merged all the ann templates into {{ann}}. Feel free to discuss it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Anime and manga#ann template merge proposal. --Eruhildo (talk) 02:52, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Protection?

edit

Since this template is on a large number of articles and has been vandalised 3 times in just over a month, would it be an idea to apply for semiprotection or something? Shiroi Hane (talk) 12:46, 8 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Go for it. There shouldn't be any pressing need to edit this template in the near future, anyways, so I'd say go ahead and shoot for full protection. —Dinoguy1000 21:44, 8 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've put a request in. I noticed after posting that the new combined template is already protected as high risk, but this template is still in wide use. Shiroi Hane (talk) 00:15, 9 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Protected template edit request

edit

{{editprotected}} There should not be a line break between </noinclude> and the rest of the template; this wrapper is currently producing <p> elements instead of the correct <ul><li> when used with list formatting. 71.194.235.227 (talk) 08:36, 10 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

  1. Saying please wouldn't do any harm here.
  2. Could we have some further explanation or a link to a discussion where consensus supports deprecating this template?
Thanks! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:07, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
*sigh* Your as snarky as ever. The fact that this and other {{ann xxx}} templates where merged into {{ann}} about a year ago should be enough of a reason. --Farix (Talk) 11:16, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
But perhaps some people like this as a shortcut ? —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 11:25, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Not much of a shortcut as there are no fewer character strokes. But that still doesn't prevent it from being tagged as deprecated template. --Farix (Talk) 12:09, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Apologies if my comment came across as snarky. It was designed as a gentle reminder to be courteous to other editors. Wording the sentence in the way you did, it came across more as an order than a request. I assumed that you hadn't meant it in that way, but I thought a friendly hint was in order. (Feel free to continue this on my talk page if you wish.) Regarding the matter in hand, I agree that the simplest method would be to simply redirect the template to Template:Ann (although the more common technique is to have the abbreviations redirecting to the full wording). Marking it with {{tdeprecated}} suggests that you want it deleted, and to replace all translusions would seem to be unnecessary work. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:14, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, I've had a look at this now. I agree with Farix in principle that this template should be deprecated: It's a version of {{ann}} with the first parameter "anime" pulled into the name, with some other (newer?) features from {{ann}} missing. However, deprecating it on the spot isn't helpful since it has still 1000+ transclusions. Once it's no longer used I would support deprecating it. Amalthea 09:38, 26 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Titles with parentheses

edit

So I just noticed that an article like Bleach (manga) would come up as "Bleach (manga) (anime) at Anime News Network's Encyclopedia" if one doesn't use the title field. It would be nice if the template could check for things like "(manga)" in the title and not include that part, but I'm not sure if that is possible (or at least practical). Does anyone have any thoughts on this? --Eruhildo (talk) 20:14, 30 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, it's not currently possible (the same problem exists with our infobox). There is an extension that would enable such parsing, but I'm not holding my breath for devs to install it. ダイノガイ?!」(Dinoguy1000) 22:39, 30 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bug report

edit

There's something wrong with the markup for {{ann|company}}: when {{ann|company|...|...}} is used, it inserts a linebreak and a curly brace where the word "company" (I presume) should be. However, if you duplicate the last parameter ({{ann|company|...|name|name})), it works fine again. I don't think this is how it was intended, so please fix it. --Koveras  07:48, 2 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

That would be my fault; my last edit omitted an opening curly brace. This fixes all problems on the testcases page. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 22:08, 2 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Italics

edit

Italics should really be turned off for the "name" option.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 04:32, 17 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

A lot of the template's behavior needs to be cleaned up, fine-tuned, and generally synced with itself... User:TheFarix was working on this in the sandbox for a while, but he stopped before really proposing an update, and a few months later, I overwrote his work to test some updates before implementing them. The whole thing needs to be revisited, and I'll see if I can find the time to do so. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 19:07, 19 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think I got it, I actually didn't overwrite Farix's sandbox work, so I was able to add my direct edits to it, make some further tweaks, and test. It looks like everything is behaving as it should now, though some more testcases wouldn't hurt and there's some other stuff that should be looked into (what about OADs? and does ANN list any light novels, video games, etc.?). ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 22:01, 21 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Companies and people should not be followed by either "(company)" or "(people)". This is only necessary to distinguish between anime and manga were the titles will be the same. —Farix (t | c) 13:06, 22 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
  Fixed. Anything else? ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 16:20, 22 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Added releases to Template:Ann/sandbox

edit

I edited Template:Ann/sandbox to allow releases to be used as a type. See the list below.

More testing may be needed but this should make this template more useful. In case someone changes my edit this is my version of this template. -- allennames 00:52, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I don't think this is a good idea, as the releases section is already linked to from the main series page in ANN, so it would just encourage redundant links. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 01:02, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
And what is the purpose of this? I don't see any reason to create links to subpages in the external links section. —Farix (t | c) 01:25, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
One question. Can the body (not the store links) of the release articles be edited by the users? -- allennames 05:27, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes. Its editable from the main articles on the series. Pretty much anything under the Encyclopedia section is editable by users. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 05:36, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Let me get this this strait. Are you telling me for example that Sailor Moon (GN 1) can be edited from Sailor Moon (manga)? -- allennames 05:52, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Releases can be added to, and presumably modified. I didn't want to risk getting my account frozen by playing around with it to see the full details and I have no corrections to submit at the moment. All I can say is that if you have an account and go to the Sailor Moon page, you can choose "Releases" and hit "I know this" and be taken to a screen that will let you submit information for the releases page, same as you can do with the episode lists. I was able to go to the edit releases screen to add details, and I'd presume that if you submit something already there, it would be an edit to the existing. This would be in keeping with how the main page and episode list subpages work. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 05:57, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Okay. I was hoping that the release articles might be reliable enough to use as sources. -- allennames 06:10, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, no, though like the main encyc pages, they can sometimes provide details that can help in searching for reliable sources. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 06:16, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I suggest you read this. -- allennames 06:32, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
And I'd suggest you actually try it rather than just looking at the FAQ, though if you don't have an account then of course you can't. I'm telling you what I could edit, not just what they say you can. They also claim to verify the contributions of other, but reality is they appear immediately. Reality verus claims please. Consensus has already agreed that ANN's encyclopedia as a whole, which includes the Releases, are NOT reliable sources. I'm not the only one who confirmed releases was editable. Further, the FAQ also clearly indicates that users still edit the releases section. Being "top contributers" does not mean they are suddenly not users and are now experts. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 14:42, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
If what you say is true than Anime News Network should be removed from the list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Anime and manga/Online reliable sources#Situational. This will also mean that this template will also need to be deleted. -- allennames 19:21, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Do ready ANN's entry in WP:ANIME/RS, it clearly states that the encyclopedia portion of the website is unreliable. It's news and review sections are, however, reliable. But since the encylopedia entries link to the news reports and reviews, this makes them valid external links. —Farix (t | c) 19:41, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
If what AnmaFinotera wrote above is true than ANN in its entirety is an unreliable source. Read what she wrote more carefully. -- allennames 20:10, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
AnmaFinotera did not say that ANN in its entirety is an unreliable source. Just the ANN encyclopedia, which includes those release pages you were wanting to link to. —Farix (t | c) 20:19, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
If the FAQ is false than everything on the ANN website must be brought into question. (time ref: 14:42, 1 November 2009 (UTC), User:AnmaFinotera) -- allennames 20:40, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'd appreciate if it you'd stop putting words in my mouth. ANN's news and reviews are reliable sources. Its encyclopedia is not. Its FAQ is completely irrelevant. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 20:55, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
You can add these three to your reading list. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (manga), The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (manga): Releases, and Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (GN 1). (Note the URLs.) -- allennames 06:51, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
And? Yes, there are two different releases areas, but both are user editable and the individual pages give no sources for information at all. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 14:42, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Just to show how unreliable the ANN encyclopedia can be: ANN gives a release date for Nananana v1 as February 15, 2005. RightStuf gives the release date of April 30, 2005. Amazon.com gives the release date of July 6, 2005. And Barns and Noble gives the releases as simply June 2005. One can assume that the retails sites originally got their release information from the publisher. But where did ANN get its release date? —Farix (t | c) 14:56, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
First here are the links you should have added as a courtesy. (Na Na Na Na Graphic Novel 1 - rightstuf.com | Na Na Na Na Volume 1 - amazon.com (I am omitting the other URL.) | Na Na Na Na, Volume 1 - barnesandnoble.com) Second the fact that the sources conflict not just with Anime News Network but with each other means that more evidence is needed to bring the reliability of ANN into question. Finally if ANN is unreliable then what I said to AnmaFinotera (time ref:19:21, 1 November 2009 (UTC)) about what should be done is true here as well. -- allennames 19:52, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
As AnmaFinotera and I've already stated, only the encyclopedia section of ANN's website is unreliable. This isn't an all-or-nothing situation. Certain section of the ANN website are reliable, other sections are not. That is why ANN is listed in the situational section of WP:ANIME/RS. —Farix (t | c) 19:56, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Within the context of sources sections do not exist. You either trust a source or you don't. By the way, I have reverted my edit of {{Ann/sandbox}}. -- allennames 20:41, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
This template is for creating external links. It is not a template for referencing. If you want to create a reference, this is the correct template to use. —Farix (t | c) 12:06, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Noted. -- allennames 19:53, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I know I'm a bit late, but since you asked my opinion, I have to agree with AnmaFinotera and Farix: I just don't see the utility of this extra functionality, given the reliability of ANN's Encyclopedia and the intended purpose of this template. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 01:31, 6 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Light Novel type?

edit

ANN has them but I don't think the template does. DragonZero (Talk · Contribs) 07:26, 22 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Both "novel" and "light novel" are used as non-conformity flags for ANN's "manga" type (as "live action" is for "anime"), increasingly so now that their use has been formalised and multimedia franchises spilling out from light novels are so common, so one or both should definitely be available as a type in this template. Shiroi Hane (talk) 23:50, 22 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
It seems you can already enter "light novel" (or indeed anything you like) as a type. The documentation just needs to be updated to reflect this. Shiroi Hane (talk) 23:55, 22 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

ANN ID on Wikidata

edit

d:Property:P1985. New property to be used with a prefix, like IMDb identifier. Let's use it. Hausratte (talk) 22:27, 20 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

I assume this is for the encyclopedia pages and not the shortcut URLs for articles, reviews etc. right? We should wait until usage instructions are written (or write them) before editing the template to make use of this property. – Allen4names (contributions) 04:35, 28 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, this is for the encyclopedia pages. Instructions: d:Property talk:P1361. Examples of usage: d:Q662 (Evangelion), d:Q400096 (Noir). I think it would be nice to import ANN links from enwiki to Wikidata (maybe by some bot, like d:User:SamoaBot who imports IMDb links?). Hausratte (talk) 09:01, 5 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
The template would need to use a Lua module to replace the slash "/" with ".php?id=". Do you know anyone with experience with Lua? – Allen4names (contributions) 06:22, 12 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Allen4names: you can contact Vlsergey. Hausratte (talk) 17:57, 12 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Hausratte: I am a little embarrassed at what I wrote last year. I should have read mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions more carefully. You could use {{Ann|{{lc:{{#titleparts:{{#property: P1361}}|1|1}}}}|{{#titleparts:{{#property:P1361}}|1|2}}}} or request an edit of this template to replace each instance of {{{type}}} with {{{type|{{lc:{{#titleparts:{{#property: P1361}}|1|1}}}}}}} and {{{id}}} with {{{id|{{#titleparts:{{#property:P1361}}|1|2}}}}}. – Allen4names (contributions) 04:21, 23 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Hausratte: Please do not refactor your old request particularly as the Wikidata property Property:P1985 was created in July of this year (page info link). You should also note the properties listed on that property's talk page ie. Property:P1982, Property:P1983, and d:Property:P1984. Template:AnnTemplate:Anime News Network – Expand acronym to make clear at a glance what the target is. Redirect will of course be kept and current uses won't be affected. --Trialpears (talk) 17:29, 21 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • Support it makes sense since not everyone would know what the term stands for and it’s not something that is usually referred to by the acronym like NASA. Also, even if we kept the acronym it should be ANN not Ann.--65.92.163.98 (talk) 02:06, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Support - Per WP:TMPG, "Template function should be clear from the template name". I also think we shouldn't keep this particular lowercase redirect, as it wouldn't be appropriate for editors to use it long-term. Even keeping an appropriately capitalized shortcut like ANN would be confusing with {{All-Nippon News Network}} or other entries listed on ANN. It'll take a bot task to replace ~9600 uses of this template, but worth it. -- Netoholic @ 11:16, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Weak Support under the condition the Template:ANN redirect is maintained. Template:All-Nippon News Network is used far fewer times (and would be abbreviated as ANNN). Link20XX (talk) 13:12, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Considering this has been around since 2008 it strongly indicates that people are not getting this confused with the All-Nippon News Network.--65.92.163.98 (talk) 21:34, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
The lead of All-Nippon News Network indicates it is exactly known by "ANN", not ANNN. -- Netoholic @ 22:15, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Even so, I'm with the IP address. In the template namespace, Template:ANN is used far more frequently than Template:All-Nippon News Network. I would say it is so much so that we should keep the redirect. Link20XX (talk) 22:21, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
