RISC OS boxes at bottom of articles

On the NetSurf page there's an AmigaOS 4 box at the bottom, which can be expanded. It contains grouped lists of related articles. Could we have something like this for articles relevant to RISC OS? Tlsa (talk) 16:09, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

That's a good idea, but the question is what to include. I think the nearest we have at the moment is {{Acorn computers, clones and compatibles}}. How about this as a start, lifted from {{AmigaOS 4}}?

For 'Key software' what would be the threshold for providing "major functionality"? It's worth noting that there's been discussion of creating a '$.!Boot' article. There are no current killer apps for RO, so including historic apps (e.g. Sibelius (software)) in such a template would be giving undue weight with regard to current use of the OS. The notelist looks odd and could do with tweaking to give a horizontal bulleted list, with the bug workaround perhaps needing investigation - or maybe there's a better alternative solution. in some browsers, but that's probably a browser issue. -- Trevj (talk) 09:49, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

How about adding ADFS, Ram disk and WIMP to the list of OS Technologies?

Maybe an emulation section, which lists all the emulators for RISC OS hardware? Like ArcEm, RPCEmu, Arculator, VirtualRiscPC, etc?

For the Applications section, I think the important thing is to list those apps that are almost universally used by RISC OS users for some class of activity. Such as NetSurf, FTPc, ArtWorks, Zap, StrongEd, StrongHelp and Digital CD.

A section listing all the hardware capable of running RISC OS would be good too. Probably Archimedes Series, RiscPC, RiscStation, A9, Iyonix, BeagleBoard, PanadaBoard, etc. Tlsa (talk) 12:25, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Also, Drawfile could be on the list of OS technologies. I think RISC OS was fairly unique in having OS-wide support for a vector graphics format.

Drag & Drop is a pretty key feature of the UI too. Like dragging a save directly from one app to another. (E.G. saving a table from Tablemate as a Drawfile into an Impression document.) Maybe OLE too? Tlsa (talk) 13:02, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

This includes some more emulators from List of computer system emulators#Acorn Archimedes. In the short term, IMHO Drawfile and Spritefile should probably be piped (or redirected) to Draw (software) and Paint (RISC OS software)... as articles about the filetypes won't have much meaning without corresponding app articles. Such filetype articles will also be subject to potential deletion. But they could be spun out from the headings within the app articles in the future. I guess the navbox can be copied to {{RISC OS}} and further worked on from there. Also, by Development board (RISC OS) (singular, per WP:SINGULAR) does that include various Simtec ones, etc.? Personally, I'd also choose lower case 's' for series under Hardware but you and others may disagree. Cheers. -- Trevj (talk) 13:01, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

I've never heard of the ARM 2 emulator or a few of the others. Perhaps it would be better to list only the notable ones explicitly, and have a More... link to the category?

The WP:SINGULAR thing says classes of objects is an exception. This is the class of development boards to which RISC OS has been ported. I'd envision the page about such boards to include BeagleBoard, BeagleBoard xM, PandaBoard, etc. Each of their derivatives should be mentioned too, like TouchBook for the BeagleBoard, and that box that RComp ship for BeagleBoard xM. Not sure about Simtec ones, but if RISC OS ports are available for them, why not? Maybe SOC could be removed from that link title?

Perhaps worth adding the RiscStation R7000, and Omega to hardware list?

Lower case s for series sounds fine to me.

Sure Paint/Draw can be the articles those links point to.

I think you're right about the less well-known emlators, and I don't think there's an appropriate category yet. WP:PLURAL has further info about titles, but (currently - unless there are articles about them) I doubt that Development boards (RISC OS) would meet the WP:GNG. From WP:PLURAL:

• Articles that actually distinguish between multiple distinct instances of related items can be sensibly given a plural title when the alternative would be to create an inappropriately large number of short articles, one on each instance. The various Zeno's paradoxes, for instance, are incorporated into one article, with a correspondingly plural name.

I think that's exactly the case here. To avoid individual articles for RISC OS on each of the boards. Or we could just use separate articles for each board RISC OS is ported to. Don't know which is best. But an article covering the group called Development board (RISC OS) (singular) seems very odd since it would cover a whole load of completely separate products from unconnected companies. -- Tlsa (talk) 10:30, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Proposed move/new title

This template was previously headed "List of Acorn, Ltd. microcomputers" and is now "Microcomputers by Acorn Computers". A page move and change in heading would legitimately allow expansion, e.g.

• 8-bit microcomputers
  • add Olivetti's Prodest PC128S
• 32-bit personal computers
  • add A9home, Iyonix PC, Touch Book

The request is for the {tl|Editnotice central}} and {{Editnotice central redirected}} templates to be placed, in order to tidy a few things up, per WP:TALKCENT and the above discussion. In reviewing the {{Edit protected}} requests, I now see that I failed to include the necessary 'Template:Editnotices/Page/' prefix. Hi, please check the article Star Fighter (video game). I found it by accident of the cleanup listing (see above) and recognized a big copyvio. Hopefully I caught all text, but one of the references is down. Anniversaries in 2012

In 2011 we had the 30th anniversary of the BBC micro. This year will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Acorn Archimedes and the 15th anniversary of the Acorn Network Computer. Therefore, perhaps these articles could be focus of some attention over the coming months. Does anyone else think this makes sense? Acorn clones and compatibles

Which computers should be in the list of Acorn clones and compatibles in Template:Acorn computers, clones and compatibles? I think only those computers that were/are sold with a stable RISC OS version including license and commercially supported, currently Beagleboard xM in Kiste and ARMini. Raspberry Pi, BeagleBoard, DevKit8000, IGEPv2, Touch Book, Pandora, PandaBoard and PandaBoard ES are not sold with RISC OS, only have a unstable and/or incomplete RISC OS version and/or the RISC OS support is only done by the community. --Egel _Reaction? 11:42, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

I understand now. The inclusion of the Touch Book but not the various devboards was because it is (was) a consumer product. As for support, you're right that it's nonexistent for such products. How about adding a separate section for consumer hardware for which an unofficial port is available, e.g. including the Pandora (console) as well as the TB (though probably not the devboards)? -- Trevj (talk) 15:00, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
