In Spain, a distinction is made between the Spanish Royal family and the King's Family.[1] Members of this royal family and the more extended king's family are listed in this template.
Royal Family
editPer tradition, but also specifically regulated by Royal Decree, the Royal Family of Spain consists of the holder of the Crown (king or queen), his consort, descendants (children and grandchildren), and parents of the monarch.[2] Since the succession to the throne of the current king in 2014, the royal family consists of six members:[1][3]
The King of Spain and his wife:
- The King Felipe VI;
- The Queen Letizia;
their daughters:
- Leonor, Princess of Asturias;
- Infanta Sofía;
his parents:
- King Juan Carlos;
- Queen Sofia.
King's Family
editThe King's Family are all close relatives (siblings, niblings, cousins, uncles/aunts) who, despite being related to Felipe VI, are not part of the Royal Family and, therefore, do not have any institutional role, unless they the King designates otherwise.[1]
With regard to the King's Family, the following persons are considered as its main members:[1][3]
- eldest sister of the King: Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo;
- her children: Don Felipe & Doña Victoria;
- younger sister of the King and her spouse: Infanta Cristina & Don Iñaki Urdangarin;
- their children: Don Juan, Don Pablo, Don Miguel & Doña Irene;
- the children of King Felipe's aunt, the late Infanta Pilar, Duchess of Badajoz: Doña Simoneta, The Viscount de la Torre, Don Bruno & Don Luis;
- King Felipe's aunt and her spouse: Infanta Margarita, Duchess of Soria & Carlos Zurita, Duke consort of Soria;
- their children (and cousins of King Felip): Don Alfonso & Doña María;
- aunt-in-law of King Felipe: Princess Anne, Dowager Duchess of Calabria.
