Expand, rename or merge? edit

What shall we do with this article? According to Wikipedia:Naming conventions, this article ought to be Virtual community of practice (which redirects to here). I know that in some literature VCoP is used, which could justify its current name. I have no strong opinion one way or the other on that. I think, however, the first order of business should be deciding to expand or merge with Virtual community, which is also planned to be overhauled. My vote is to merge and make it a section in Virtual communityWP:FA candidate (per WikiProject Community only, so far). IMO, this would be the most efficient outlay of our "social capital", for what it's worthCQ 19:49, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I disagree with you. Communities are not equal to communities of practice. Similarly virtual communities of practice are not equal to virtual communities. Merging this item with Virtual communities would detract from the concept's independence.

In my opinion, the two articles should definitely be linked to each other, as should this phenomena be mentioned in CoP and viceversa. This theory should be expanded as much research has been undertaken over the last year in the field.

In my opinion a bigger question is whether it may be merged with community based/driven knowledge management.

It is important that you read (at least the abstract) of all references, which are in the external links. After that it will be clear that the concept of Virtual Communities of Practice (VCoP) is very diferent of Virtual Community, so I cannot agree with the merge, rename or expand. It is correct the way it is now. • Ninguem 16:02, 12 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I propose that this page be converted to the Online Community of Practice article found at User:Emaradiegue/Online_Community_of_Practice Emaradiegue (talk) 23:10, 22 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

User:Emaradiegue/Online_Community_of_Practice certainly has some interesting points - I don't think it is a simple one for the other replacement, but some of the ideas should certainly be included in the current article.

This article should really be merged with the Online Community of Practice article. If not someone has to develop a really strong differentiation between what a "virtual community" and an "online community" is. PtrHrngl (talk) 17:59, 18 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I agree with PtrHrng on this. It would be difficult to differentiate a virtual community and an online one. Synergee (talk) 19:31, 28 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
