– Both these pages were moved by Pvmoutside from the existing spelling, with synchronisation with the default standard for bird names, the IOC World Bird List cited, contrary to the principle that articles should not be changed from one national variety of English to the other, unless there are strong national ties to one variety, which these articles do not have (WP:ENGVAR). I moved the pages back, but this move was further reverted; I'd think keeping the original variety English wouldn't be controversial, but it's not perfectly clear this is so. —innotata 00:19, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

• Comment:Reason why article was originally moved, and then reverted was to conform with Wikiproject Bird's decision to follow IOC spelling. IOC spells both species without the "u" in color....Pvmoutside (talk) 01:23, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
  • Could this be taking standardisation too far? It seems the IOC uses American English for all species in the Americas, while here we follow the original form in the article except where there is a strong national connection. I don't see any reason to change varieties here. —innotata 01:44, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
    • Actually the IOC compromises when making englsh name changes. Take a look at Grey Hawk which is the official IOC name and takes the British form. I was going to request a move for American Gray Flycatcher to American Grey Flycatcher when I got to that section of the list...Pvmoutside (talk) 11:14, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
• Revert move (so support) per WP:ENGVAR. Both articles have had stable titles since creation I don't think IOC standardisation is a good enough reason to move away from that. Jenks24 (talk) 16:42, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Support. The British language variant was clearly established at the creation of the article. The wholly admirable and commendable rationalisation policy of one WikiProject cannot take precedence over a fundamental WP principle. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:34, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

• Support. Insisting on the IOC forms would actually be problematic (cf. "American Grey Flycatcher" mentioned above, which would impose the English spelling of "Gray" on an article about an American species which was always written in American English). • Support per WP:ENGVAR. Colored and coloured are the same word spelled differently; there is no difference in the terminology itself that Wikipedia:WikiProject Birds#Taxonomy and references addresses. If this logic were to be used with Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Medicine-related articles#Naming conventions, Anemia would have to be moved to Anaemia because that's how ICD spells it. These guidelines are surely designed to apply to differences in naming, not regional differences in the spelling of the same word. (Note: Gray/grey cannot be treated in the same manner as color/colour : grey, although not usually preferred in American English, is still recognized as a valid American spelling (for example, see its treatment in American Heritage or Merriam-Webster's Collegiate.) —Some standardized rigour (talk) 09:11, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
