Per MOS:ETHNICITY we shouldn't really get into this in the lede. Defining pre-WWI Białystok (directly part of the Russian empire - but at the edges of it - and a roughly equal mix of several ethnicity) - is far from straightforward. Then you have 7 years in the Second Polish Republic - and then most of his life in France.
