Nutmeg house

edit

"Raffi ran a Nutmeg house at the University of Toronto up until 1980"

WTF is a "Nutmeg house"? There is a bed and breakfast with this name in Toronto. Any relation? Otherwise, googling "nutmeg house" gets me nowhere. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.17.178.36 (talk) 03:21, 26 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

"Child honouring"?

I'm really not sure what this term is supposed to mean exactly. Perhaps a more clear phrase could be used. BigSciZot 02:45, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Raffi re-write

edit

I've spoken to Raffi's representatives about the promotional bio that they had submitted. I've been retained to correct the bio and bring it closer into line with wikipedia's regulations. Just a heads up that I'm working on it and I have proposed the following changes to them:

  • Standard bio template sidebar
  • Sections on early life, career, etc
  • Removal of market-speak and superlatives
  • Reinstatement of previous article submissions (trivia, parodies), into the bio
  • Sourcing proper copyright permissions for his current portrait. forwarded to OTRS

I plan to put up what I have when I get everything together properly, most likely starting Friday, March 9th. Hopefully this will give us a better "starter" article, and I appreciate any feedback or help from the community.

Nutmeg House

From the article:

Raffi ran a Nutmeg house at the University of Toronto up until 1980

This is what? Proxy User (talk)

I found it!

edit

Well, the confusion about nutmeg started with some vandalism back in February that nobody caught. He ran a coffee house, and someone, [1], changed "coffee" to "nutmeg," and "Toronto" to "Calcutta," but nobody noticed the nutmeg. Well, I'm gonna go change it. I'm surprised nobody has looked through the diffs yet, aside from myself. Saebjorn! 14:21, 31 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Systems Thinker

edit

LOL, really? Deleted. No one vaguely reputable considers the man a "systems thinker" in any definition. He started a philanthropy organization dealing with kids, great, that doesn't make you Hegel or Kant or a thinker in the newer meaning of the word like a Schumacher, or in the sense used in communications, computers and complexity. Order of British Canada

edit

What is the Order of British Canada? Does it exist? And if it's not going to happen until 2031, what is this here for? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.90.90.242 (talk) 08:23, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes the Order of British Columbia exists. Raffi was inducted in 2001 [2] (not 2031). Mathew5000 (talk) 10:52, 17 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Page title

edit

Hi. Looking at Raffi (disambiguation), it seems to me that the Raffi page title should be used for the Egyptian-Canadian musician since he's the most likely result (principle of least surprise) that users want when searching for "Raffi". The other Raffis can be linked from the disambiguation page. Is there any objection to making this move? --MZMcBride (talk) 23:19, 22 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Since nobody has objected, can an admin please do this page move? It entails:

I think that should do it. --MZMcBride (talk) 06:00, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Your move of Raffi was reverted by Anthony Appleyard on 28 Dec, claiming it to be "uncontroversial" which is strange as it was a revert. Anyway it suggests there may not be consensus for this move, and further discussion seems warranted. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:37, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

User:Ivanvector did you not notice on the dab? Armenian's second most famous novelist is also Raffi. Please strike The others merely have Raffi as a first name Thanks In ictu oculi (talk) 10:27, 6 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
You're right, thanks for that correction. According to the stats above, the musician Raffi gets more hits than the author Raffi by a factor of more than 10:1. As far as I know we can't tell how many of these hits are from the search engine versus direct links, but regardless it's a compelling statistic that the musician Raffi is the primary topic among the two people who are known by the mononym Raffi. This is better solved with a hatnote: This article is about the musician. For the novelist, see Raffi (novelist). For other people with this name, see Raffi (disambiguation). Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 16:21, 6 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
User:Ivanvector why does Britannica only have Armenia's national novelist and not the Canadian children's musician? In ictu oculi (talk) 19:03, 7 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Beats me, we're not Britannica and we don't follow their rules. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 19:06, 7 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. As presented above, the singer gets about twice the page views of Raffi Torres, and none of the others even come close. Additionally, this is only one of two three who use Raffi as a mononym. kennethaw88talk 05:42, 6 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Same again: User:kennethaw88 did you not notice Raffi (novelist)? You might want to strike this is only one of two who use Raffi as a mononym. In ictu oculi (talk) 09:58, 6 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
User:kennethaw88 thanks for editing your above post to now read "this is only one of two who use Raffi as a mononym" In ictu oculi (talk) 17:18, 6 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Actually, it was Raffi Boghosyan that I hadn't noticed. I guess I haven't kept up with the Bulgarian music scene enough lately. kennethaw88talk 02:37, 7 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
So of the people known as "Raffi", the musician gets 90% of the pageviews. And even if you add in the other articles on people with the first name "Raffi", you get:
The musician still gets 62% of the pageviews - much more than all the others combined. A Google Books search confirms that among the subjects of these articles, the musician receives by far the most coverage in reliable sources. Dohn joe (talk) 16:20, 6 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
This really is nonsense. If a popular children's musician in Canada can't get more than 62% of all views then there's no way there is a WP:PRIMARYTOPIC at all. There comes a point when preferring a trivial bit of entertainment culture becomes North-America-centric rather than contributing to building up a serious encyclopedia. Try http://www.britannica.com/search?query=raffi - result? In ictu oculi (talk) 17:18, 6 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose – ambiguity for its own sake, or for the sake of a popular kids' musician, is not a good thing. Dicklyon (talk) 06:26, 7 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Well, but neither is ignoring the fact that 90% of our own readers looking for plain "Raffi" want a particular article. Isn't the idea to get our readers where they want to go as quickly as possible? Right now, around 900 people a month come to the dab page. Wouldn't it be nice to send 800 of them directly to the article they want? Dohn joe (talk) 14:52, 7 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Again that's because entertainment will always outnumber serious subjects. But there's a problem here if a WP:LOCALCONSENSUS on the Talk page of minor and local entertainer displaces a real encyclopedic subject because WP:PRIMARYTOPIC requires long term encyclopedic significance, if it doesn't why not just delete the second part of WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and just use hitcounter software to automatically displace all encyclopedic topics with pop-hits? In ictu oculi (talk) 18:59, 7 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Again, please review the Google Books search and compare results for the musician versus results for the novelist. Dohn joe (talk) 19:50, 7 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
in Google Books there is very clearly no primary topic In ictu oculi (talk) 09:12, 10 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
You linked "Raffi was" not "Raffi." The latter search yields many results for the musician. Fyddlestix (talk) 14:53, 10 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per Dohn Joe. Most readers who search for Raffi are going to be looking for the musician, and we can add a hat note link to the disambiguation page for the benefit of those who are looking for a different Raffi. This seems like a pretty clear cut primary topic to me. Fyddlestix (talk) 14:57, 10 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Can see that WP:LOCALCONSENSUS and demographics (more Canadian editors than Armenians) is going to end up putting a Canadian children's musician known by a common Armenian first name over all other Raffis in world history including Armenia's most famous novelist - the writer is the only subject in real encyclopedias - just to remove "(musician)" from a musician. This is bad day for Wikipedia. In ictu oculi (talk) 09:36, 13 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
