What's the odds on this being a native name? A lot of native names have been mangled in various parts of the world, and sound odd to English speakers' ears.--MacRusgail 18:38, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've always heard the Yankee Doodle legend. I doubt it's a native name though- I don't think that there were any nearby settlements, and nobody seems to have noticed a resemblance to native words.--Wafulz 18:59, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I know from experience that Gaelic names can end up something completely different. In North America and Australia, native names end up really mangled. I'm not sure how "yankee" turns into "punkey" though --MacRusgail 19:04, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
My other thought is that it might be a mangling of a French name - "doo" as in "du" (of the). Makes as much sense as the Yankee Doodle story.--MacRusgail 19:11, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
