Rappers

Should rappers even be in this list? There is some debate as to whether or not rap even constitutes a form of music, but also the lifestyle chosen by such people is conducive to being murdered, and it seems intellectually dishonest for both reasons to count rappers among the list of legitimate, peaceful musicians who were murdered. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.35.103.217 (talk) 20:43, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

Rap is marketed and consumed as music, and it's not the place of this article to debate its merits as a musical form.

As regards lifestyle, for a long time all musicians, actors, and artists were all considered to be inclined to live degenerate lifestyles, conducive to their early and/or violent demise. Hip hop is a form of music. The reason I removed them now is list of murdered hip hop musicians contains 60+ artists, I removed the hop hop musicians here because of the overlap between the two pages. As well as allowing other genres and musicians to be highlighted here uniquely. With the 17 that were previously listed it is hard to choose which rappers get featured and which do not.

Sorting impossible

It is impossible to sort this list in any useful way, because the entries have been made illogically. The "names", for example, need to be entered last name first. The way it is now, it only sorts on first names.

Likewise, the "dates" field needs to be in year/month/date format, because the way it is now it sorts on the month name.

Incorrect Information

Anton Webern wasn't "murdered"; he was shot by a American sentry in Germany at the end of WWII, because he was out after curfew and mistaken for an enemy soldier. Accidental death, or death by misadventure, but not murder.

Likewise, Anne Boleyn wasn't murdered, but executed by the Crown after having been found guilty of adulatry and treason. You can argue that the charges were trumped-up, but still, execution by the state isn't usually classified as "murder", since the executioner is just carrying out their duly-appointed duty. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.89.176.249 (talk) 22:47, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

Furthermore, on what grounds can she be considered a musician at all. Yes, she had been taught music in childhood (along with various other skills such as dancing and needlework)

and could play and read music competently, but the same is true of many millions of people throughout history, of whom doubtless tens of thousands (if not more) were murdered. Elliot Smith

While I get that musicians such as Kurt Cobain are "officially" considered to have committed suicide, what about a case such as Elliot Smith? It is unknown if he committed suicide or was murdered. Thoughts? Electricmaster (talk) 15:49, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

Sam Cooke

By definition, Sam Cooke wasn't "murdered" and shouldn't be included on this list. Both legally and morally, killing in justified defense isn't murder; being killed in justified defense isn't being murdered. His death may be/have been controversial among his fans and apologists, but as his page on this site states: "no concrete evidence supporting a criminal conspiracy [i.e. murder] has been presented." Any other people on this list who were determined to have also been killed defensively as a result of their own violent actions should be removed from the list along with Cooke, or all such individuals should be left in place while the list/page should be renamed to reflect its more general nature as a list of musicians who are known to have been killed by another. 72.240.207.43 (talk) 09:26, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
