THE NAMES SINTI AND ROMA ARE GERMAN NOT ENGLISH This is an encyclopedia in English. Consequently it should avoid using foreign words when English equivalents exist. The only English word I know that means the same as the German term "Sinti und Roma" is "Gypsy", which has become unfashionable, although I have not enquired into the grounds for this development. I suspect it has something to do with a cult of endonyms and an aversion to exonyms. I have no aversion to exonyms and I do not consider endonyms preferable in principle to exonyms, although there may be special cases in which it is preferable to use endonyms (i.e. when the exonym is demeaning). I do not consider the name Gypsy demeaning, so I plead for replacing "Sinti and Roma" with "Gypsies". I find exceedingly oppressive the pedantic preoccupation with supposedly accurate ethnic endonyms, which is on the one hand a symptom of the intrusion of ethnographic discourse into the English language and on the other hand signifies an obsession with ethnic identity markers that characterizes reactionary postmodernist ideology, the bane of our times.
