It should be added to his page that he became only the seventh player to be intentionally walked with the bases loaded. He did so tonight(4/24/09) against the Rockies at Coors Field. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rhettd (talkcontribs) 04:22, 25 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Boston POV

edit

The "Manny Being Manny" section of this article is downright awful, and it's clearly been written from the perspective of a Boston Red Sox fan. Labelling incidents as "the final straw" and saying things like "led Red Sox nation to demand the deportation of number 24" is ridiculously POV and should be deleted or edited. Also, Red Sox nation is solely a creation of the media and Boston fans and isn't an actual entity or physical reality.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.247.254.119 (talkcontribs)

I'm inclined to delete the whole section... the relevant parts are already covered in the "personality" section and this whole list of incidents is really not needed. Spanneraol (talk) 18:11, 24 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Wait, Are you saying that even though I'm a member of Red Sox Nation I still have to pay taxes to the U.S. Government. That just doesn't seem right. Seriously though I'm not a fan of that section. IMHO if it's an important enough incident it should be incorporated into the section covering the season it occured.--Cube lurker (talk) 18:24, 24 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for that. Can you please make one more POV edit:

"On July 18, 2005, Ramirez disappeared into the "Green Monster" during a visit to the mound by pitching coach Dave Wallace with two outs in the top of the 6th inning. When pitcher Wade Miller[29] was ready to resume pitching, Ramirez was nowhere to be found. It is suggested he went to urinate or even defecate, but there are no toilet facilities inside the scoreboard area. Manny has returned to the wall several times since during pitching changes, but has always returned on time. Ramirez also was seen playing left field at Fenway with a water bottle in his back pocket.[30][31]"

This is just nonsense, which he's explained many, many times. He went into the wall to hang out with the scoreboard guys and take a break from the crowd noise and hot sun. It isn't that hard to understand.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.23.17.94 (talk) 16:49, 7 March 2009

"Manny Being Manny"

edit
  • April 4, 1994 The Original Incident - In the first game of his rookie season, Manny hit a two-run ground-rule double in the 8th inning to tie the game. He initially thought he hit a home run, and continued to round the bases, until the third base umpire stopped him. The announcers commented on how he was a tremendous young hitter, but seemed to have a short attention span: Manny was then almost immediately picked off at second base by the catcher. Later, after drawing a walk in the 10th inning, he was replaced with a pinch runner.[1]
  • July 1, 1997 - Manny was playing right field in his first game in the Astrodome. Tim Bogar of the Astros hit a bouncer down the first base line. The ball came to a rest under the bullpen bench and Manny signalled to the umpire. Manny was unaware of the ground rules which stated that the bench was in play. Manny continued to signal to the umpire while Bogar got an easy inside-the-park home run.[2]
  • December 10, 2001 - Ramirez, in his first season with Boston, claimed he was uncomfortable, prompting the new ownership group to create a separate interview room, to ease Manny's transition with the Red Sox.[3]
  • May 18, 2002 - Ramirez lost his diamond earring sliding into third base during a rehab start with the Pawtucket Red Sox. After the game, 13 PawSox players and the Syracuse grounds crew combed the third base area and found the stud, but not the diamond that was worth a reported $15,000.[4]
  • September 7, 2002 - Ramirez requested the song "Good Times" by Styles P for his plate appearances. The unedited song's lyrics about marijuana use were played over the Fenway Park public address system.[5][6]
  • August 29, 2003 - Manny expressed in an ESPN interview that he would like to play for the New York Yankees, the arch-rivals of his current team, the Boston Red Sox.[7]
  • August 30, 2003 - Manny missed several games with pharyngitis amid media speculation that he was well enough to play. When the New York Yankees came to town to play, Manny was still too sick to play, but was seen at the downstairs bar of his hotel with former Yankees player and close friend Enrique Wilson.[8]
  • September 1, 2003 - Manny refused to pinch hit in a game against Philadelphia, angering manager Grady Little, who benched him the next game.[9]
  • July 21, 2004 - From his spot in left-center field, Manny inexplicably made a diving play to cut off a relay throw from center fielder Johnny Damon, allowing David Newhan of the Orioles to score on an inside-the-park home run.[10]
  • July 31, 2005 - After heavy speculation that he would force a trade, Manny entered the game versus the Minnesota Twins as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 8th inning, to a standing ovation 54 minutes after the 4:00 trading deadline had passed (he had been booed his two previous games). Ramirez proceeded to chop an RBI single up the middle off Juan Rincón that would prove to be the game-winning hit. After the game, Ramirez was quoted as saying, "Forget about the trade, man. This is the place I want to be, man. It's great, man. They love me here, man. This is the place to be. 'Manny being Manny,' he's great, man... we've been through a lot, this is the place for me, I'm just happy to be here... I'm back!"[11][12]
  • August 24, 2005 - Ramirez, up with one out and the bases loaded, hit a ground ball but did not run down the first base line, resulting in an inning-ending double play. The Kansas City Royals rallied to tie the game, and eventually won in extra innings.[13]
  • March 20, 2007 - When he was supposed to be at spring training, Ramirez appeared in an eBay listing selling a barbecue grill. [14] The listing was later cancelled by eBay.[15] He later posted a custom 2006 Chrysler 300C SRT8 on eBay.[16]
  • October 17, 2007 - With the Red Sox trailing Cleveland 3-1 in the ALCS, Ramirez told reporters that if the Red Sox were eliminated, it wouldn't be "the end of the world," igniting Red Sox team members towards a "come from behind" ALCS victory. Though Ramirez faced criticism in the media for his statement, his team would go on to win their next 7 games to win the ALCS and World Series.[17]
  • October 18, 2007 - In game five of the ALCS at Jacobs Field, Ramirez hit a fly ball to deep center field that bounced off the top of the outfield wall and back into play. Ramirez, assuming he had hit a home run, casually strolled to first base and was forced to settle for a single instead of an easy double after it was ruled that the ball had never left the field.[18]
  • October 27, 2007 - In game three of the World Series, Ramirez was thrown out in a close play at home plate. Manny often flips his helmet off while he is running the bases, to help pick up speed. In this instance, replays show that Manny's helmet bounced off of his heel, causing him to stutter-step as he rounded third base.[19]
  • May 14, 2008 - At Baltimore, Manny caught a Kevin Millar fly ball to deep-left, ran up the wall, high-fived a Red Sox fan in the stands, and turned around and fired the ball back to the infield for a double play.[20]
  • July 6, 2008 The Last Straw - Manny was called in to pinch-hit, in the top of the ninth inning of a tied game at Yankee Stadium. Mariano Rivera threw three consecutive fastballs past Manny, without so much as a swing. "I was kind of surprised, definitely, that he never took the bat off his shoulder," Rivera said. "I don't know what he was thinking. That's Manny." Manny asked to be left off the starting lineup for the important Yankee series, citing knee pains. Upon completion of the series, Red Sox management ordered MRIs for both of Manny's knees, in hopes of eliciting some truth from a tense situation. The MRIs came back clean. The latest episode became one of the most incendiary moments to fuel the unrest of Fenway's faithful. This became arguably the last straw that led Red Sox nation to demand the deportation of number 24. [21] [22]
  • July 9, 2008 - During the 6th inning of a home game against the Twins, Manny climbed into the Green Monster and was seen talking on a cell phone during a pitching change.[23]
  • July 15, 2008 - Manny drew the wrath of Red Sox owner John Henry for comments made to the Boston Herald, where he hinted that team management had not been up front with him in regards to upcoming contract negotiations. Henry responded angrily the following day, saying Manny was a critical part of the Sox's 2004 and 2007 world championships and that the team always kept Manny in the loop. [24]
  • July 18, 2008 - In the bottom of the 6th inning, in a game against the Angels, Manny tried to chase down a fly ball in front of him in left field hit by Maicer Izturis. He went into a slide to catch the ball, but missed it so it dropped and rolled behind him. He scampered on all fours to get the ball, and ended up rolling on top of the ball when he reached it making center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury unable to pick up the ball. Manny had to lift up his rear to get the ball off the ground. When he finally picked up the ball and threw it into the infield with a big smile on his face, Izturis was on third base instead of the likely single had Manny just fielded the ball instead of trying to catch it on the fly. Theo Epstein and Terry Francona were both visibly unhappy with the whimsical fielding. [25]
  • July 27, 2008 - Before his game against the New York Yankees, Manny stated that he would play in Iraq if he needed to play there.[26]
  • July 30, 2008 - Before the third game of a series against the Angels, Manny held a handwritten sign stating "I'm going to Green Bay for Brett Favre straight up." The Green Bay Packers quarterback was in the throes of a similarly untenable dispute with management. Ramirez reiterated this proposal in an interview with ESPN Deportes that aired the same day.[27]
  • August 11, 2008 - In what could be characterized as the first "Manny being Manny" incident with the Dodgers, when his teammates took to the field at the top of the ninth inning against Philadelphia at Dodger Stadium, Manny did not appear and nobody knew where he was. After several minutes of searching for him he finally jogged onto the field with the front of his uniform unbuttoned. He said he needed to use the restroom. He returned with a red glove instead of a black glove he used the innings before.[28]

The result of the proposal was consensus against move. As demonstrated and without rebutting evidence, in keeping with Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English), the common spelling of his surname in multiple, reliable, English language sources is without the diacritic mark.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:41, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's naming conventions.
  • Oppose The accent seems to have been dropped by convention. [http://www.amazon.com/Becoming-Manny-Baseballs-Enigmatic-Slugger/dp/1416577068#reader Ramirez's authorized biography doesn't use it], nor do the LA Dodgers, the LA Times, the Boston Herald or even the often diacritic-snobbish New Yorker.Erudy (talk) 20:09, 11 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose No source that he spells his name with a accent. Other than the Yahoo link and a Wiki site (Wiki site not being considered a reliable source of coarse), all of the external links spell his name with no accent, so that includes MLB's site. TJ Spyke 00:01, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per WP:UCN as seen in the evidence presented by User:Erudy and User:TJ Spyke above. The subject is notable for actions in the USA where diacritics are routinely dropped. — AjaxSmack 02:48, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
    • Two specious arguments there. " The subject is notable for actions in the USA" - this does not determine use of diacritics. "in the USA where diacritics are routinely dropped" - a sweeping overgeneralisation of a complex issue, which has a lot more to do with the topics, publishers, context and languages involved than the location of the publisher. Even if there is a correlation (which I doubt) that doesn't mean we then automatically make all articles conform to the majority. Knepflerle (talk) 22:18, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Support Dominican person, Spanish surname, regardless of what this or that site decide to do with the accent. "Ramírez" is the correct display of this person's surname. Húsönd 11:10, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • If he is considered Dominican and not American (as currently stated in the lead of the article) or dual-nationality, then I support using Ramírez, the correct spelling of his Spanish name. If he is considered American and not at all Dominican, then I am neutral. MTC (talk) 19:02, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
    • More irrelevance running both ways - you don't have to surrender diacritics at the door to pledge allegiance to the flag, and publishers don't go round checking the citizenship rights of subjects before applying their in-house manual of style to their surnames. Read the relevant policies - usage is what matters, and nationality is but limply coupled with that. Knepflerle (talk) 22:22, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per Erudy - the only evidence-supported argument given above which is valid according to WP:NAME. I would have preferred evidence of predominant usage to evidence of usage, however. Knepflerle (talk) 22:26, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

HCG and other things

edit

I'm not a big fan of the current way the wiki deals with this. His suspension and basic information, which can be distilled into a sentence or two, should be found in the intro. Further, the information given here is shoddy. Manny was busted for having actually used steroids AND using HCG. They knew he was using steroids because of the his hormone ratios. So his suspension is not exlusively about HCG. That's just the one they have a paper trial to. Anyway, the intro should cover this latest controversy.66.190.29.150 (talk) 22:26, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

It should not be included in the intro at this point because so much of the information is speculative right now. The article handles the info correctly with factual information. He was not "busted" for steroids. He was suspended because he had used a banned substance, HCG. The other stuff is all just speculation right now and doesn't belong in the article until factual information is released. Spanneraol (talk) 23:06, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
You obviously don't know the issues involed here. Ramirez's positive test came this season. It was of concern because his ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone, another naturally occurring hormone, exceeded 4 to 1, a source familiar with the case told The Chronicle. Under baseball's testing rules, that result is proof of steroid use. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/05/07/SPUU17GJQ3.DTL —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.190.29.150 (talk) 23:23, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
That is not proof of anything...and none of this has been confirmed by reliable sources. Spanneraol (talk) 14:54, 10 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I am really surprised that they didn't bother including why these drugs are actually given to individuals. The way it acts on adipose tissue alone is very interesting, and without the release of the medical records there is no way of knowing for sure what was going on. I am not suggesting that he was taking these for adipose tissue disorders, though that is my sub specialty. My point is that without the release of those medical records I think the wiki should not go about just assuming they know something. As far as I know a wiki is for documenting information, not assuming things. Aside from those issues I would say that a typical male of his age suffering from premature lowering of testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone. I am not suggesting anyone has that, merely stating that if it was the case it would explain why a physician would prescribe this. It would also explain why he went to a private physician instead of one provided by the team. Again I am not saying any of that is true, and without medical reports and tests none of us will ever know. According to HIPPA that won't be happening anytime, so for now I think it is best to only document things that can be actually proven and not assume things. 76.123.149.130 (talk) 17:15, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Like I said when this news first broke, steroids were implicated: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-manny-hgc15-2009may15,0,5088726.story http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4159870 I guess the LA Times, ESPN and the SF Chronical aren't good enough for wikepedia's standards. Even though he was only suspended for the use HCG without an MLB "ok" to use the drugs he was also found to have had elevated and synthetic testosrone levels. Synthetic testosterone = taking steroids = manny took steroids.66.190.29.150 (talk) 11:56, 10 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Speculation by newspaper reporters is still just speculation.. not facts. Spanneraol (talk) 14:20, 10 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
There is nothing speculative regarding the statements "had synthetic testosterone in his body when he was tested this past spring." and "the test revealed the testosterone was synthetic". Nothing at all.66.190.29.150 (talk) 15:14, 10 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Beside many primarily(all?) stylistic changes, I have split one sentence in the lead, in order separately to attribute the link between hCG and steroid cycling to dealer Victor Conte; and to the LAtimes article (ref name="Suspended"). I didn't find the link to steroids in the NYtimes article previously cited alone in the lead. As I write the crucial references are numbers 4, 5, 35.
Maybe Conte and the hCG-steroid link should be in section 2009, not in the lead. At the moment I have no reliable judgment about that. --P64 (talk) 16:37, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

"Ramirez' authorized biography, Becoming Manny: Inside the Life of Baseball's Most Enigmatic Slugger was released in bookstores March 10, 2009." I'd suggest removing the phrase alltogether, due to its irrelevance in the article (particularly as every major sports player has an autobiography nowadays). The article is protected, so if anyone with the power wants to remove the lign, go ahead. French Connections (talk) 18:41, 19 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

The page should be updated from the vague 'he also was scheduled to play a few games in the minors prior to rejoining the active roster' to the more accurate 'Manny played two games at AAA Albuquerque and is scheduled to play four games with Class A Lake Elsinore before rejoining the Dodgers.

{{editsemiprotected}} Manny Ramirez was claimed off waivers by the Chicago White Sox. As of today (August 30, 2010) he no longer plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Chicago White Sox will pay the remaining $4.2 million of his contract as he plays out the rest of the year in Chicago.

Drguillen13 (talk) 17:07, 30 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

According to the Dodgers' roster, the transaction isn't official yet. According to the MLB.com story about it, he will become a Chicago White Sox (White Sock?) later today. Taking a quick break from actually improving article, I want to comment on the page protection on Manny Ramirez that has thankfully been in place for some time, preventing any vandalism that otherwise would have overwhelmed this page today in light of the news. More of these articles with the potential to be contentious should get extended or permanent semi-protection. – Muboshgu (talk) 23:35, 8 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Manny RamirezManny Ramírez

Allowing is not the same as asking for. Without the accent mark, it sounds differently (OK, that does not happen in English, but that is because you don't know how or why). He is a Latin American person. If he was back in his country, he should use the accent mark, and if he does not, he would be commiting a misspelling. Spanish is a regulated language, unless English, that's why you are not used to these reasons. I work in newsrooms and I would be surprised if I found many NYT reporters who can explain me why this surname changes pronunciation without the accent mark. But I see I'm in minority here, so if you want to have it wrong, have it. Againme (talk) 04:20, 14 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
He grew up in New York... this is his country. Spanneraol (talk) 04:26, 14 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
I see what you mean, but I was refering to his country of birth. See, your name is first registered in the country where you were born. Againme (talk) 04:38, 14 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
That isn't really relevant per WP:OFFICIALNAMES. (I won't even go into the fact that there is no evidence or citation of his "birth registration" given here.) Ramirez is known almost exclusively for actions in the US and his name is used there without an accent. Bill Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe III and is legally William Jefferson Clinton but the article is not at either of those titles per WP:UCN. —  AjaxSmack  03:07, 18 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Prose tag

edit

I propose that the solution to the {{prose}} tag in the "Off the Field" section is to give the list a prose lead. The information already in that list works in list format, but it could use a section intro. Jorgath (talk) 23:08, 10 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and I don't have time to write it right now, but if no one has written it by the time I find some time, I'll give it a shot. Jorgath (talk) 23:14, 10 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Intro

edit

I find it very sad that he was one of the greatest hitters ever and the majority of his intro is about PEDs. There is way too much information about the PEDs in the intro, the majority of which can be shifted down to the actual section of the article that talks about that. Sounds more like a slanderous hate article then an "encyclopedic" supposedly non-biased article. That being said, I have my doubts that anything will change. I would suggest that the line:

*Ramirez is mentioned in the song "Dump the Clip" by Army Of The Pharaohs, along with David Ortiz. He is also mentioned in the song "Battle Cry" by the same artist.

Be deleted. It is basically spam for some no name rapper with no cultural significance. It needlessly clutters the article.

In the 2009 controlled substance scandal, You should insert the names of the identified doctors that contriobuted to the situation (Dr. Pedro Bosch and his son Anthony P Bosch). Both were identifed by ESPN, YAHOO and every other major news source. Both are again currently under investigation for providing PEDs to Alex Rodriguez, Melky Caberrera and Paul Braun, and MLB stars.

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. No source currently on the article mentions those names and I'm not inclined to add names of living persons connected with this "scandal" without a source. —KuyaBriBriTalk 16:05, 8 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Last MLB appearance

edit

Since Manny has not appeared in a MLB game since 2011, is it acceptable to add "Last MLB Appearance" to his info box.

For those of you wondering: Last MLB Appearance: April 6, 2011 for the Tampa Bay Rays

  • originally wrote "April 7, but he did not play on the 7th and retired on the 8th*

It could always be changed in the unlikely event that he returns to MLB in the future. --Boston Burkenation (talk) 00:11, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I am doing this review per request. But give me a few days however, as I still got 2 more GA reviews to finish and this will be an extremely detailed review. Thanks Secret account 02:39, 14 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Perfect. My semester ends Friday, so I have some exams to take throughout this week. Thanks for your willingness to review this, Secret. Sportsguy17 (TC) 02:41, 14 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Well I did a quick glance though it and I see major problems with the article.... it needs some massive expansion, hardly anything written about him on his Cleveland days, eight seasons into barely three paragraphs!! Playoff heroics and World Series into one paragraph!!! very statsy, nothing on his playing style or his popularity with fans outside a two sentence "personality" section, multiple dead links, and so forth. This is going to be a fail unless you want me to go though how to proceed with this article for a chance to pass GA in the future. Secret account 03:12, 14 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

In that case, I request to withdraw to make improvements without a GAR hanging over my head. Too much work is needed still. Sorry. Sportsguy17 (TC) 01:53, 15 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Manny being Manny

edit

Hey guys,

So I think the Personality section would be good if it focused primarily on "Manny being Manny", which it is intended to. However, I'm stuck on what to include, so if any baseball editor could help me out, that would be great. I'm pinging, Go Phightins! and EricEnfermero for help, but any suggestions from anyone are welcomed. Thanks, Sportsguy17 (TC) 03:34, 1 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

No strong opinion, but I'd favor keeping that type of material under the Personal life section, as I think that WP:CRITS is a consideration. Much of the current personal life stuff is redundant to the early life info. EricEnfermero (Talk) 03:54, 1 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
EricEnfermero I agree. I think the Personal Life and Personality sections should be merged. My biggest issue was the "Manny being Manny" moments. There are so many of them, but I'm just not sure which moments to include (i.e I'm not sure which moments would be considered notable and which ones wouldn't). Sportsguy17 (TC) 04:17, 1 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
That stuff was originally in the article and was removed (see discussions above)... primarily because it just became a section of loosely associated trivia.. I don't know if its necessary to add a bunch of that stuff to the article. Spanneraol (talk) 04:42, 1 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
I tend to concur with that. Plus, the references I've provided offer plenty of "Manny being Manny" moments. Thanks for the opinions all. Sportsguy17 (TC) 04:44, 1 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

I'll be glad to take a look at this. I notice that SG17 has been away from WP for an extended period and I don't know if he plans to return. With that in mind, I'll leave some initial feedback. If anyone responds to it in the next few days, we'll continue the review. If not, we can close the review until there is an active nominator. EricEnfermero (Talk) 02:38, 16 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Initial checks

edit
  • In the GA Toolbox, Dablinks shows no problems, but Checklinks highlights several URLs that are dead or that may have changed.   Done
  • There are lots of images, but there are no copyright status issues or caption problems that I detect.   Done
  • I noticed at least one issue with close paraphrasing - the third sentence of the Early Life section.   Done
  • I checked the rest of the Jockbio citations and found another issue: The part about the 1994 season makes it sound like Cleveland's season ended prematurely, but there was a strike that year. May need to add another source to explain that.   Done
  • In glancing through the article as a whole, I notice that there is inconsistent application of MOS:ACRO. In particular, the entry goes back and forth between American League and AL. AL is fine by itself after the first use of the full term.   Done

Let's start there and see what response we get. If this feedback is addressed, we can move to a section-by-section look at the prose. Thanks, everyone, for a lot of work on the expansion of this entry. EricEnfermero (Talk) 04:26, 16 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

EricEnfermero, thanks for taking up this review and good to see you again. I've been really busy in real life lately and haven't really had time to edit, but I heard via email that you had responded to the GAN, so I thought I'd take a look. I have exams today and tomorrow, so I'll address feedback this weekend. Good to see you again and thanks for taking up this review. Sportsguy17 (TC) 02:35, 18 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
Good to see you as well. No hurry here. I will be on vacation in Mexico starting Friday, but I will return by the middle of next week. EricEnfermero (Talk) 03:04, 18 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
Will make the appropriate changes this weekend. Sportsguy17 (TC) 12:43, 3 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Update: I forgot that I had this open, but I hope to continue the feedback by this weekend. EricEnfermero (Talk) 11:42, 23 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi @EricEnfermero:, sorry for the delays (I've had a busy month or so). Anyway, I have made the updates you suggested (although if you don't mind checking to make sure my checklinks corrections went through, as I do not have a computer on me right now). With that, I think it is time for a detailed review. Sportsguy17 (TC) 02:25, 29 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Still two links showing up as dead. One is currently ref 119; the other I am looking for, but it's from SOSHwiki, which probably isn't a good source to use anyway. I'll leave some more feedback this week, but so far things look pretty good. As a popular modern player, Ramirez has a well-documented article, so my remaining suggestions might just be prose issues, but I'll take a closer look this week. EricEnfermero (Talk) 12:29, 29 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Once I am back at a desktop and can use checklinks more easily, I will replace the link for ref 119. As for SOSHwiki, it's an external link and it doesn't appear to be of much use, so perhaps removing it isn't a bad option. Sportsguy17 (TC) 01:34, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Lead

edit

I'm so sorry for the delay. We can start with the lead...

  • Place the MLB acronym in the opening sentence after the first use of Major League Baseball.   Done
  • "before going on to play 1 season" - change to "before playing one season"   Done
  • "most in big league history" - common to use "big league" in informal baseball writing, but better to use MLB for an encyclopedia   Done
  • The part about meeting his wife seems out of place before the mention of his childhood. This lead is so long that it might be worth leaving her out or moving that part down.   Done
  • "batting .269 hitting 17 home runs, and 60 RBIs" - needs a comma after .269 and a verb before 60 RBIs; should use the full term "runs batted in (RBIs)" on the first mention.   Done
  • Later in the paragraph, "RBI" is used. I have seen both RBI and RBIs. Just need consistency.   Done
  • "single-season RBI records" - should be record, I think.   Done
  • Link David Ortiz.   Done
  • The part about Conte doesn't really summarize the article. The body of the article uses an ESPN article, not Conte, to describe hCG. (In the body - under the "2009" subsection - the ESPN article is also closely paraphrased.)   Done
  • "another violation to its drug policy" - violation of   Done
  • 50 game suspension - hyphenate 50-game   Done

EricEnfermero (Talk) 15:47, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Early life

edit
  • Still at least one close paraphrasing issue: "a Dodgers uniform with number 30 on the back" - adding Brooklyn doesn't really help here, and the source doesn't specify whether it was a Brooklyn or LA Dodgers uniform.   Done
  • No need to mention again that he was 13 years old in 1985.   Done
  • The Sara Rimer NYT source (ref #10 right now) has some good info to expand this section.   Done

EricEnfermero (Talk) 16:33, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Minor leagues

edit
  • This section is sourced to only one reference and I can't find really any mention of his initial minor league career at that Bleacher Report article. I'm wondering if the refname is intending to point to a different Bleacher Report article. EricEnfermero (Talk) 20:15, 9 August 2015 (UTC)   DoneReply

1993-1994

edit
  • I can't find where the about.com piece mentions Mélido Pérez. In general, I think we can find more authoritative sources than about.com anyway.   Done
  • Lowercase s for "strike" in 1994 MLB strike.   Done

1995-1997

edit
  • Looks good to me. I would just use the full terms for ALCS and ALDS on the first mentions, then the acronyms.   Done

1998-2000

edit
  • By 2000, the entry is a little heavy on statlines. To break those up, this source describes Manny's injury (hamstring) and describes how his return may have boosted the team (though not to the playoffs) by giving Alomar, Vizquel and Lofton more good pitches to hit.   Done

EricEnfermero (Talk) 20:15, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

2001-2003

edit
  • I made some minor copyedits here, but I think it's okay.   Done

2004

edit
  • Looks good.   Done

EricEnfermero (Talk) 21:09, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

2005-2006

edit
  • Looks good.   Done

2007-2008

edit
  • second para - switched back to full term "runs batted in"   Done
  • same para - "Major Leagues" - either use lowercase major leagues or acronym MLB   Done
  • third para - change Bernie Williams to just Williams on second mention   Done
  • "On May 31, 2008, Ramirez hit his 500th home run, against Baltimore Orioles pitcher Chad Bradford at Camden Yards in the 7th inning on the first pitch, becoming the 24th player in MLB history to do so." - maybe break up this long sentence into two.   Done
  • consider adding "teammate" before Kevin Youkilis to give the incident some context.   Done

Dodgers (2008-2010)

edit
  • unlink previously linked terms like Boston Red Sox   Done
  • change words like 2nd and 3rd to second and third, consistent with style in rest of article   Done

Cubs

edit
  • Is there anything to include for his role this season? This source describes him working with Javier Baez, but I am not sure if there is anything worth mentioning there.   Done

Personal life

edit
  • I would take out the part about not being a natural-born US citizen. That part should be obvious from his birthplace and from the next part which describes him as gaining citizenship.   Done
  • Better to use "as of (year)" rather than "currently" per WP:WTW.   Done

References

edit
  • Not the biggest deal, but it looks like there are two separate groups of refs to Baseball-Reference.com (right now, refs #1 and #64).

Once we get these addressed, I may take one more look and make some copyedits, but I think we are getting closer. EricEnfermero (Talk) 02:51, 11 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

@EricEnfermero: All appears to be complete. I expanded the Early Life section based on the NY Times article by Rimer. I'm not sure if what I added was what you were looking for, so feel free to add, delete, or correct anything. Also, thank you very much for doing this review. I appreciate your feedback and getting to work with you. Sportsguy17 (TC) 02:16, 14 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

The section on his personal life notes that his son, Manny Jr., plays for a minor league team in New Britain, CT, as of 2018.
