Can anyone tell me what a "guru-deity" is? --Dakinijones (talk) 19:41, 24 October 2008 (UTC) Maybe it is a deity teaching like/as a guru.Reply

I'm guessing they mean a being who was a historical figure, a guru, but over time has also become venerated as a deity. An example that comes to mind is Machig Labdron. AD64 (talk) 06:04, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

I would like to know whether the socalled Dorje zahorma hat has some connection with Mandarava of Zahor? It can be seen here, Chatral Rinpoche.

Birthplace: Zahor vs. Sahor

edit

I've been working on editing this article by replacing the flowery language with more straight forward language, inserting references, and adding additional content. I'm wondering if anyone has any additional information about the birth location of Mandarava? As noted, one biography states it was in Zahor, in northeast India, while other sources cite what I take to be Sahor in northwest India, like the reference above. Any information or assistance is welcome.AD64 (talk) 06:08, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Removing "needs additional citations" template

edit

I think it is time to remove the "needs additional citations" template. Any reason for me not to be bold and remove it? AD64 (talk) 06:35, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

The "Emanations and reincarnations" and "Iconography" sections stand out as completely unsourced, so I think the template should stay at least until that problem is resolved. Cordless Larry (talk) 06:46, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your input, @Cordless Larry:. I will continue to seek out references. Does anyone know who wrote the original list of reincarnations? Wondering what their sources were .... AD64 (talk) 15:08, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
You could use the revision history search to find out, AD64. Cordless Larry (talk) 15:36, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
This is most helpful, @Cordless Larry:. I'll definitely look there. For the future, how might I navigate there myself? Where does such information live? Or, do I just keep using that same form and filling in new details? I'm new at all this and willing to learn, so your support is appreciated. Best, AD64 (talk) 16:56, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
There's a link to the search tool from each article's history page, AD64. Cordless Larry (talk) 16:58, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks for the information. Onwards, AD64 (talk) 17:26, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Adding Banners

edit
I note the informative banners and boxes that I see on other articles on Buddhism and would like to add this kind of thing to this page. I don't quite understand how to do it though, from a technical point of view. The one here on Padmasambhava's page is an example of what I'm considering. Does anyone else know where to find these, how to insert them, and any relevant protocol? Thanks. AD64 (talk) 23:16, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
I have tried to do a couple things to improve the layout. Was this the sort of thing you were after? Is there anything else you would like done? Cheers, John Hill (talk) 02:58, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
That's exactly what I was going for. Thanks so much @John Hill:. I do appreciate the collaboration. If there is anything else I can think of for layout, I'll definitely ask. Best, AD64 (talk) 04:19, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi @John Hill:. I just thought of another related entry that could use the same banner. Might you be up for adding one to the Yeshe Tsogyal entry? Thanks very much. AD64 (talk) 05:12, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Only too happy to be of some help! Don't hesitate to contact me if you find any other such pages that could do with a bit of touching up. However, if you want to do this sort of thing yourself - it is not too hard - it just takes a bit of practice and getting used to.
The way I do it is to look at a page I would like to emulate and then click on "edit" and copy the "infobox" and any other code you would like such as the one for Tibetan Buddhism and then paste them into the edit page of the article you want to fix up. Then, it is s simple matter of replacing the text and the code for the photo, and so on in the copied "infobox" to the page you are working on - and delete any duplication (such as the name of the photo). You can keep checking on your progress by just hitting the "show preview" button as many times as you need to - to make sure you are getting it right before you save it all.
If, however, you do run into any difficulties, or you find it all too hard - don't hesitate to contact me again. I will be glad to help where I can.
Finally, thank you for your efforts - we all benefit from them. Cheers, and all best wishes, John Hill (talk) 06:54, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Emanations and Reincarnations Section

edit

I've been doing more research and came across this blog (https://protectingnyingma2.wordpress.com/2011/03/04/women-in-vajrayana-buddhism/)which lists the emanations of Mandarava in almost the same order (and same tone?) as the current Wikipedia article. Since the Wikipedia article has no references for this section, except the recent references I added about the recognition of Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo and Niguma, I'm proposing we remove most of the information about the incarnations information for now. If I find any independent sources for this information, I can always rewrite this section, with sources, and add it back to the article. Thoughts, ideas, suggestions? Best, AD64 (talk) 23:17, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

I've moved most of the contents of this section to my sandbox. I am currently researching sources so proper citations can be included. Once I have solid sources, I will rewrite this section and reinsert it. I'm open to comments, suggestions, and support. Best, AD64 (talk) 05:35, 4 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Assessment

edit

I reviewed this article for assessment purposes. While it is very extensive, it is almost unreadable. The jargon is overwhelming. I can't imagine the average user (and I have a PhD) being able to make much out of it. I am opposed to allowing it to proceed any further toward "GA" without a thorough rewrite, which replaces the jargon with everyday equivalent expressions. --Vicedomino (talk) 21:36, 17 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello Vicedomino. I'm grateful for your input. I've been trying to take this from a flowery unintelligible stub to something decent. You assessment is very helpful in this process. I will begin to work on this again, before too long, and will do what I can to remove jargon, etc. Thanks again, AD64 (talk) 21:55, 17 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi all. I have just made some hurried changes - especially to the first couple of paragraphs - trying to make the article more readable. Unfortunately, I can't spend much more time on it at present - life is too hectic here. Please have another look at it and see if you can improve it further. Many thanks. John Hill (talk) 23:32, 17 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Glad to have your support John Hill. Every bit helps. I will be able to focus on this again soon. Thanks again, AD64 (talk) 00:27, 18 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
