What do others think of this being renamed to list of stadia in Wales so we can add rugby, cricket etc.? Welshleprechaun (talk) 15:46, 22 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

No objections as long as the list has minimum capacity for the stadia, say 1,000 ???...Seth Whales (talk) 20:29, 3 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yeh, that seems reasonable. Welshleprechaun (talk) 20:47, 3 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

2 Missed Port Talbot Stadiums

edit

Talbot athletic Ground, which has a 5,5000 capacity - predomantly used for Rugby Mardstons Stadium - Afan Lido - has a 4,200 capacity, football only.

Oh and Glanhford Park and Goytre are based in Port Talbot. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnrconnolly (talkcontribs) 13:37, 8 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good call, I can't believe I forgot the Talbot Athletic Ground! But are you sure about the capacity? Worldstadia says it's 3,000.Pondle (talk) 13:44, 8 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Cardiff Arms Park

edit

The 53,000-capacity National Stadium was listed here - despite the fact that the only remaining part, the North Stand, is now "Glanmor's Gap" in the Millennium Stadium. I've removed it and re-added the Arms Park with the capacity of the current Cardiff Rugby Ground. Pondle (talk) 22:40, 3 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

My apologies, I misread Cardiff Arms Park. Welshleprechaun (talk) 23:33, 3 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ninian Park

edit

We ought to remove Ninian Park at the start of the 2009-10 season - after all, both the Vetch Field and Stradey Park are still standing, yet neither are in use or currently listed on this template. Pondle (talk) 16:25, 29 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Very well. Welshleprechaun (talk) 19:37, 29 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
No need to wait. Ninian Park is no longer in use (a requirement to be on the list). The season has ended, practically half the stadium was sold at auction recently, and there will be no more games there. Cardiff City Stadium however is in use, as the team have held their first training session there, and is scheduled to officially open in a few weeks. You cannot included both of these stadiums on the list. Nouse4aname (talk) 08:10, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Millennium Stadium

edit

Football, rugby union, rugby league, motor racing and boxing are all noted as 'Principal sports' of the Millennium Stadium. Two points: firstly, I wouldn't see any sports other than football and rugby union being 'Principal sports' of the Millennium Stadium, and secondly, capacity is different for boxing and motor racing - which is the point of the article after all. Thoughts? Daicaregos (talk) 10:35, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good point. I would even say that the principal sports should be listed as rugby union, and then football. The stadium was built and owned by the WRU afterall. The stadium was built as a rugby/football stadium but designed with the potential to host various other sports. I would agree with removing all other sports expect the two stated above. Nouse4aname (talk) 10:38, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. Although another option would be to change the name of the column from 'Principal sports'. Daicaregos (talk) 10:44, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
That is an option, but it could get long and obscure... and as you state above, the capacity varies depending upon the sport at the MS. Nouse4aname (talk) 10:54, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
True enough. Let's see if any editors disagree. Daicaregos (talk) 11:37, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
I added the principal sports column referring to all sports hosted there that weren't simply a one off. Rallys are hosted every year at the stadium which has also seen many high profile boxing matches, so I would strongly object to their removal. Welshleprechaun (talk) 12:53, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
I am certain the capacity for that event is not the same as for football/rugby matches - even if you do consider it as one of the 'Principal sports' of the Millennium Stadium - which is debatable at best. How do you intend to ensure the reader is not misled? Daicaregos (talk) 13:17, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
We could remove all except for rugby and football from the principal sports list and add a footnote referring to the other sports but noting the altered venue capacity for these events... ? Also, while the stadium did host the Millennium magic weekend for two years, rugby league has only been played at the stadium a handful of times in the 10 year life of the stadium - hardly a prinicpal sport? Nouse4aname (talk) 13:20, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Only "three Rugby Football League Challenge Cup finals were held at the Millennium Stadium (from the 2002–03 to 2004–05 seasons) while Wembley Stadium was being rebuilt.[1] The other venues used, before the Challenge Cup final returned to Wembley, were Twickenham and Murrayfield." I've been working on Sport in Cardiff over the last week and, strangely enough, only added that paragraph yesterday. :) Daicaregos (talk) 13:30, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ah yes, I forgot about those, but that's only another 3 games and it seems unlikely that rugby league will return to the stadium unless Celtic Crusaders decide to pull their collective finger out! What do you think about the footnote option? I guess rugby league could stay in the principal sports list as the capacity would be the same as for football/union. Nouse4aname (talk) 13:36, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sounds sensible. I don't feel strongly about whether they are included or not. But, information should be deleted, rather than be shown wrong. Boxing etc, are not 'Principal sports' of the Millennium Stadium - so perhaps the column could be renamed - and the capacities are not the same as for rugby and football - so that should be noted (somehow). If neither of these things are changed those sports should be removed. Daicaregos (talk) 14:08, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
A simple column rename should be suitable - perhaps to Sports hosted or something. Welshleprechaun (talk) 14:30, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
But that won't address the different venue capacity according to the sport. EDIT: Although in this instance a footnote could be placed alongside the capacity figure noting the reduced capacity for boxing and motorsport, which is noted on the Millennium Stadium websit ([1]), though I can't find any official numbers for actual capacity at such events... Nouse4aname (talk) 14:42, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Then we also rename that column to Maximum Capacity. There's no need to complicate things. Welshleprechaun (talk) 14:50, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ah, now that seems a plausible option. Sorry, but the most obvious things usually pass me by! Nouse4aname (talk) 14:53, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Lovely. Do you agree on the two renames, Daicaregos? Welshleprechaun (talk) 14:58, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sure. Good ideas. Everyone happy, then? Daicaregos (talk) 16:03, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Seems so. I went ahead and implemented the changes. Obviously feel free to edit/revert if I jumped the gun a bit. Cheers all. Nouse4aname (talk) 16:17, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pontypool Park

edit

Does Pontypool park count in this list? It has a stadium with a capacity of 8,000 (according to the Pontypool Park page). The principal sport would be rugby union (Home of Pontypool RFC)Shenko316 (talk) 14:19, 11 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be on this list, so I've added it. Thanks. --Kafuffle (talk) 10:39, 12 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
