Perhaps someone can study the Trove Software Map and come up with a better tree of genres? Alex.g 16:56, 11 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Genre?

edit

I'm not sure that genre is the right word to use for this. The Genre article explains that it is a classification of art forms. It's something I'd think of in relation to films, music, paintings, books etc. While it could be argued that "software is art", I'm not sure anyone would!

How about category or classicifation instead? — pmcm 15:28, 26 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

...or type? — pmcm 15:33, 26 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

... or application ... what the software is used for?

  • government use, such as for the military
  • business applications
  • in support of non-profits
  • types of entertainment such as games

I agree, we should change this. "Type" or "application" seem much more appropriate than "category" or "classification". - Centrx 15:25, 26 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I see nothing wrong with genre. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 23:53, 29 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Genre means kind, sort, or style, and is usually used in reference to art, so novels are in particular genres and maybe even computer games, but software in general is not. This list here is a list of the use or purpose of different software, and it is much clearer to say so. Why is genre better than these or similar words? - Centrx 04:22, 5 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Maintaining this page

edit

First of all, I think this is a useful page for tagging software products. But, for one thing, it's incomplete; more about this anon.

If you perform a search of wikipedia, in hopes of finding this page, you don't get it, you get Software categories. This latter page should be merged or somehow reconciled with the current page, no?

As a matter of fact, one can't easily determine whether categories are missing, can one? If I flip to the edit view I can't see the catergories. How is the page actually constructed and maintained? How can one add categories? And where is that documented?
