Date and Location edit

Thinking through the helpful comments from the original discussion, I've tried to address the issue of Pearl Harbor versus other locations. Have also tried to address December 8 versus December 7 at Pearl Harbor.

The article for Attack on Pearl Harbor addresses the fact that all attacks in Pacific and Southeast Asia were within 7 hours of strike at Pearl Harbor. As such, it is the International Date Line that makes Dec 7 vs Dec 8 an issue. Since Pearl Harbor is the percipitating article, I have added a mention of how Dec 8 is based on local calendar, but all attacks were launched nearly coincidental to each other within (much less) than the same 24 hour period - so that the other three recipients have reason to be in the same article (albeit in a second section).

For location, I've moved action at Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay to be in the same section as the Midway and Philippines actions, since Kaneohe Bay is not at Pearl Harbor.

Finally, since Bulkeley's actions INCLUDE actions that form part of the same series of events percipitated by Empire of Japan during "the first 7 hours", I've included him, with a note that Dec 8 in Philippines happened while it was still Dec 7 at Pearl Harbor.

Comments and suggestions? Jmg38 (talk) 22:18, 12 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Other recipients on December 7/8, 1941 edit

NAS Kaneohe Bay should be considered part of the attack on Pearl Harbour. The two destroyers that attacked Midday were part of the Japanese fleet that attacked Pearl Harbor but it was separate and distant from the main attack and is appropriately listed separately. While the attacks on Malaya, Philippines, Guam, Wake Island and Pearl Harbor were nearly simultaneous, the attacks were made by separate Japanese forces in different parts of the Pacific. The award to Bulkeley covered a period of more than four months unlike the awards for Pearl Harbor and Midday which were for actions on one day, December 7, 1941. Bulkeley's award is part of the Philippines campaign and not the attack on Pearl Harbour. I suggest that the title 'Other recipients on December 7/8, 1941' be changed to 'Midway December 7, 1941'. Thanks. I`ve moved Finn back to main table and moved Bulkeley out. Changed the section title to "Midway" and adjusted the description/lead for that section. Jmg38 (talk) 02:34, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Lead section edit

Please note that I have added a new section to this "Talk" page - and that I have added it above Anthony Staunton's comments originally found just above. This recognizes that those comments open a new line of discussion regarding the details in the lead of the draft article. Jmg38 (talk) 20:02, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. Reference 1, the DOD FAQ does not seem to now exist. The second and third sentences of the first paragraph summarises and duplicates information from the main article. The third sentence which has the reference is accurate today but has only been true since the start of the Second World War. Are the second and third sentences necessary? I admit that I simply copied the openings of the other "List of MOH recipients xxxx" articles. You raise an excellent point regarding the duplication of information already found in the links to "Medal of Honor" and to "Attack on Pearl Harbor" articles. This "List" article is meant to focus on the actual recipients at Pearl Harbor, and so I've now adjusted to a sharper/shorter focus in the lead: 1) important basics for what is the Medal of Honor 2) important basics for what was the Attack on Pearl Harbor 3) important basics of how many were awarded for that day. Done, so then move on to the actual list of names and details. Jmg38 (talk) 20:02, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Call for Final Comments edit

A few more small edits done. Will wait a day for final comments, then will submit. Thanks. Jmg38 (talk) 06:29, 18 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Last Pearl Harbor award edit

Apologies for not noting this earlier but Owen Francis P. Hammerberg a United States Navy diver received the Medal of Honor posthumously for rescuing two fellow divers at Pearl Harbor. He lost his life during rescue operations on February 17, 1945. Anthony Staunton (talk) 15:00, 28 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for pointing this out. Now added, with brief description to explain the connection, under a new "See Also" section. Jmg38 (talk) 23:41, 28 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Article title edit

The phrase "for the attack" in the title of the article implies that the recipients of the medal were members of the attacking force rather than defenders. Another problem is that "attack" should be in lower case as it is not (part of) a proper noun. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 07:06, 17 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
