Talk:List of Emmerdale characters introduced in 1995

Joseph vs Joe

edit

It appears an IP is very insistent on changing Joe Tate's name within the article (also adding an uncredited middle name), so I'm opening this discussion to gain consensus on what it should be. The character is credited as Joe Tate in the show's closing credits, and various magazine cast lists (Radio Times, Inside Soap, Soaplife). From a quick Google hits search I did earlier, it seems Joe is his WP:COMMONAME, and the hits box seems to agree. - JuneGloom07 Talk 01:30, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

I would agree with the name being Joe Tate as it is clearly the most popular. Soaper1234 - talk 06:30, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

I would agree with the name being Joseph Tate. I've watched all the episodes of Emmerdale so I'm going with the facts. The character Joseph Tate was born on-screen on 8 June 1995 and named Joseph Mark Tate after his mother's stepfather Joseph Sugden (who had just recently died in a car crash) and her brother Mark Hughes (who died during the 1993 Emmerdale plane crash), it's mentioned in the article. No one is disputing the fact that he is popularly known as and mostly called Joe Tate, (he is sometimes referred to as Joseph Tate) and credited as Joe Tate on the show but even the character revealed himself to be Joseph Tate when he revealed his identity on 4 January 2018. Ned Porteous who plays the part of Joseph Tate is credited as Joseph Tate on both his Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ned_Porteous) and IMDB (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm7504614/) pages. The character is also referred to as Joseph Tate on the official Emmerdale Website (http://www.itv.com/emmerdale/tom), the official Emmerdale Twitter account (here is an instance; https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/1006240113817522187) and the official Emmerdale Facebook account (here is an instance; https://www.facebook.com/emmerdale/photos/a.165828538848.145594.117443273848/10157908955453849/?type=1&theater). Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.2.250.99 (talk) 07:51, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

80.2.250.99, I'm glad you decided to join in, although blanking the discussion wasn't a great start. IMDb isn't considered a reliable source as it's content is user generated, much like Wikipedia. So, ignoring those, we have three sites that refer to him as Joseph once. Is it possible to find some more posts from the official sites that mention either name? As I don't think that's enough to show that Joseph is his WP:COMMONAME at the moment. I'll also add that I believe the majority of characters also refer to him as Joe on-screen.
@Raintheone, ThisIsDanny, AnemoneProjectors, and Grangehilllover: Guys, we could use your input, as you each edit Emmerdale/soap opera related articles. Please feel free to invite anyone else you can think of. - JuneGloom07 Talk 16:10, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
It appears that his common name is Joe Tate as demonstrated above in the hits box. We are not disputing his actual name - just what is common from the real world perspective. All you did really was relay a fictional history written by writers aka In-universe. Unsure why you chose Wikipedia itself as the source because that is what we are discussing here. Plus IMDB is edited by anyone like here.Rain the 1 16:13, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Just adding that ITV's official site also refers to him as Joe on occasion - [1]. - JuneGloom07 Talk 16:17, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
In my opinion it should be Joe. Just echoing what has already been said really, it's clearly the most common name. ThisIsDanny (talk) 16:50, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Not just three sites, three official sites and it's not just once, I was giving an instance. On the official Emmerdale Website, you can't refer to that as once as it's the character's official page where all the posts concerning his character are posted. If you follow the link (http://www.itv.com/emmerdale/tom) and scroll down, the character is tagged as Joseph Tate in every post. On the official Emmerdale Twitter and Facebook Accounts, I have yet to see an official post that refers to the character as Joe but I can show you instances where the character has been referred to as Joseph. They are from Twitter but the same posts are on Facebook as well, here they are; -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/1006599513233022976). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/1000285411040735232). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/993218845740482561). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/993555564113416192). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/999734063752761344). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/992470916243177473). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/999731136929714177). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/992399188070629376). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/999719711771447297). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/992395684136570881). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/999682735588421632). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/992122592860483585). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/998989368760193024). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/992108655150542849). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/998956654262550528). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/992107018981961731). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/995664964483469312). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/992105508860452864). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/994656599129165825). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/992091370163752960). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/991744127841677312). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/981236389210603520). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/991382746659516417). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/980872491613569024). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/984856744810528768). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/980869974737633282). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/981990318999515136). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/979787846931361792). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/981989497985486848). -(https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/978698689161125890).

These four tweets however I find particularly interesting, in these three tweets, he's clearly referred to as Joseph Tate by the Emmerdale Team (https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/989932692455161856, https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/980873500167729153, https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/979783063440945152) and in the last tweet, not only is he referred to as Joseph in the tweet but if you watch the video attached, at the 0:08 mark, the character is tagged as Joseph Tate (https://twitter.com/emmerdale/status/991692202656124928). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.2.250.99 (talk) 18:41, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure how helpful I can be but the stats appear to show that Joe is the WP:COMMONNAME. I don't watch Emmerdale but FWIW I know who Joe Tate is but I have never heard of Joseph Tate. — ᴀnemoneᴘroᴊecтors 12:13, 21 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Well, it would have to be Joe Tate he is credited as Joe, so he is Joe, and I defiantly disagree with the uncredited middle name been added in as it does against consensus at WP:SOAPS. I watch Emmerdale and he is most often referred to as Joe. Besides, every other article only uses the credited name, so why should this one be so special? — Hatio93 Talk 15:04, 23 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
