Naming of the article

edit

Can I suggest that, for the sake of continuity, this article should be re-titled as List of deaths in rock and roll (2020s). Then it would follow in the series from List of deaths in rock and roll (1950s) through to List of deaths in rock and roll (1990s). I have left a similar message on the talk page of List of 2010s deaths in rock and roll. - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 00:13, 11 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Personally, I prefer the way this article is titled. Brackets are usually used for disambiguation, and this isn't such a page - the date in brackets is a necessary part of the title. Was there any discussion of this when the split was carried out? Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:46, 11 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Vera Lynn ?

edit

Egghead06 - I know we're pushing whatever boundaries there still are here, but.... "rock and roll"?? Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:45, 21 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Heavy metal, Lemmy, Hawkwind and Vera all on the same bill. Now that’s rock.[1].--Egghead06 (talk) 11:35, 21 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
If anybody from The Softones counts as a rocker these days, everybody rocks relatively steadily. InedibleHulk (talk) 01:30, 27 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Agree with User:Ghmyrtle, this is nonsensical. Deb (talk) 08:16, 16 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Cedrick Cotton?

edit

It is the question if a Member of a Band who released only one Album with the peak of #83 in Billboard 200 is relevant? Ideal (group)--Ovaron (talk) 19:31, 12 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

If the band has an article, then I think a member should be noted here. -- Beardo (talk) 01:42, 25 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Les McKeown?

edit

How is Les McKeown rock & roll? Or a member of the Four Seasons? And why are so many non-English-language rock performers left unlisted? Deb (talk) 08:16, 16 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Rock and roll is a very broad church, and attempts over the years to establish criteria for inclusion here have come to nothing (see the archives). Anyway, I would say the Four Seasons definitely are rock and roll in all but the most restricted sense, and a reasonable case could be made for the Bay City Rollers as well. I've no problem with adding non-English performers - additions to this list tend to be based on the whim of editors, who are mostly English-language. But, there are quite a lot of jazz and other performers - and non-performers - on this list who I would personally exclude. Good luck in trying to get consensus on any limitations! Ghmyrtle (talk) 11:08, 16 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Why? Because the definition of who exactly was a rock and roll musician was allowed to become very, very broad to encompass just about any musician.--Egghead06 (talk) 11:10, 16 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Chet McCracken cause of death

edit

Chet McCracken, who was a member of the Doobie Brothers, has a Facebook page that says he died of covid-19, but I don't think Facebook is a reliable source. What should be done here? Kart2401real (talk) 21:14, 5 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

can someone add English page of DJ Shog

Proposed split and rename

edit

I propose splitting this article -- "List of 2020s deaths in rock and roll" -- into separate articles by year, called "List of 2020 deaths in popular music", "List of 2021 deaths in popular music", "List of 2022 deaths in popular music", and "List of 2023 deaths in popular music". And I propose doing the same for the other lists of musician deaths by decade.

  1. Splitting: The article is too long for readers to navigate easily and comfortably. It's already more than 300,000 bytes long, and we're only about a third of the way through the decade. See WP:SIZESPLIT for more on this topic. Looking at List of 2010s deaths in rock and roll, two of the ten years -- 2016 and 2017 -- have already been split out into separate articles. I propose doing the same for all the years, starting with this article.
  2. Renaming: These articles list the deaths of musicians (plus songwriters, record producers, etc.) in all genres of popular music. That includes rock, and also pop, jazz, blues, country, reggae, and so on. That's what we want, but the articles should be named accordingly. (Moreover, rock and roll is a sub-genre of rock.)
  3. Lists for other decades: The same ideas also apply to the seven other decade lists of deaths of popular musicians, which themselves are listed at List of deaths in rock and roll.

What do other editors think about this proposal? Mudwater (Talk) 01:19, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Does anyone have an opinion about this, either way? Unless there are objections, I'll probably split this article into four pretty soon, as described above. Mudwater (Talk) 13:59, 25 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
It's been more than three weeks, and no one has said anything about this either way, so I'm going ahead with the split and rename. Mudwater (Talk) 22:45, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Okay, done. Mudwater (Talk) 23:41, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Splitting out and renaming the 2020s articles seemed to go well. So, I will probably split out and rename the 2010s articles. As I mentioned above, two of those are already separate. The 2017 article was split out in 2019, and the 2016 article was split out in 2021. Mudwater (Talk) 00:13, 19 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
