The result of the move request was moved to remove accents. Aervanath (talk) 07:33, 10 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Are the accents part of his legal name? I haven't seen any English language publications that use them.--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 21:20, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Consulting Wikipedia naming conventions, (See Wikipedia:ENGLISH#Modified_letters) "general usage in English verifiable reliable sources" is the guideline. Since almost all English sources do not use accents in his name, the name of the article should not use accents either.--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 02:52, 20 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

If the subject is indeed "of Jamaican and Filipino descent" then the addition of accents is quite unusual since neither of these countries typically uses them, even for Spanish derived names. Is it because he plays for Deportivo La Coruña? — AjaxSmack 03:59, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

There is divided usage. His official webpage for the Canadian National team[1] has it w/o the accents; his official webpage (in English) for Deportivo La Coruña has it with the accents[2]. In this event, the controlling guideline is Wikipedia:Use_English#Divided_usage, which says to "leave the article name at the latest stable version. If it is unclear whether an article's name has been stable, defer to the name used by the first major contributor after the article ceased to be a stub." --Atemperman (talk) 19:16, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

There is not evenly divided usage. Almost no English language sources use the accents. The page you have cited for use of the accents is not a reliable source and has multiple grammar errors.--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 18:01, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Comment - as one of the reviewing admins at WP:RM, I'd like to point out that it would be helpful if more evidence would be provided either demonstrating either that the unaccented name is preferred in English-language sources, or there is indeed split usage (which would result in the page remaining as it is now). Thanks. Parsecboy (talk) 03:11, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Using AltaVista to search English pages only, finds 116,000 results for "Julian de Guzman" and 1,440 results for "Julián de Guzmán".--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 07:29, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Are you putting it in quotes? I'm getting almost 12k for Guzman and 436 for Guzmán. Parsecboy (talk) 12:20, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes, in quotes. I didn't exclude pages that have the word wikipedia, as you did in those Google queries. Either way it's pretty clear that usage is not evenly split.--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 18:02, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

1.70 m = 170 cm edit

And that's not original research, it's a simple calculation and there's no need to exactly match the source. Walter Görlitz (talk) 05:20, 19 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

There's every reason to match the source. What's needed is something resembling a reason not to. Nothing like that has materialised yet.--Gibson Flying V (talk) 05:22, 19 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Every reason? No. I removed at least one. You've been carrying this on for months. Stop it. Walter Görlitz (talk) 05:40, 19 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
In short, you've been shown imminent reason, charts comparing how different leagues display height, and in the end it was decided that height in metres is perfectly acceptable and your soap-boxing to the contrary is not a productive use of anyone's time. Walter Görlitz (talk) 05:43, 19 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
That change wasn't possible until it was was decided that height in centimetres should be allowed for by that template so sources could be matched with. A change you yourself appeared to argue in favour of. And please explain what "soap boxing" I'm doing. Perhaps you've got your editors mixed up.--Gibson Flying V (talk) 23:33, 19 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
I remember nothing of the sort. I stated that different leagues report in different measures, but there was no consensus that we should. Walter Görlitz (talk) 03:24, 20 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Gibson IIRC furing the {{height}} RFC you were told by a number of editors, myself included, not to introduce 'cm' to articles on footballers without first consulting WP:FOOTBALL so we could get consensus on a standard display for all footballer articles. The more you edit, the more disruptive you appear. GiantSnowman 11:39, 20 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
So, we go by m as it is standard here? I support that! It's common at football articles around here and by sources. And i have yet to see one reason why we should change that. (See the Marcelo article). Kante4 (talk) 13:35, 21 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it looks like Gibson has been edit-warring at Marcelo Vieira to pursue his pro-cm POV. GiantSnowman 13:43, 21 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
I don't know that it's a pro-cm POV, it's pro-"what the source says". Walter Görlitz (talk) 16:48, 21 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
  Gibson Flying V likes this.
But when he deliberately only picks sources that use 'cm'... GiantSnowman 08:20, 22 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
