The result of the move request was: Second closure. Moved to "James Yap (basketball, born 1933)". I had previously moved this to "James Yap (basketball, born 1993)" per suggester's original string, which I reverted. (non-admin closure) — Andy W. (talk · ctb) 03:04, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
James Yap (Taiwanese basketball player) → James Yap (basketball player, born 1933) – The descriptor "Taiwanese" is confusing in this case. This is a Chinese Filipino player who competed for the Republic of China, which in 1956 was the only "China" participating in the Olympics. Nowadays people equate "Republic of China" with Taiwan, but when he was born "Republic of China" was the only China. (Republic of China (1912–49)) Has he ever lived in Taiwan? The descriptors "Filipino" or "Chinese Filipino" won't work either as they also describe Corazon Aquino's former son-in-law. Timmyshin (talk) 00:27, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- Move to James Yap (basketball, born 1993) The standard for DABbing basketball articles is "basketball" not "basketball player" because so many players move between playing and coaching. This would be more logical than the current naming. Rikster2 (talk) 01:25, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- Support the proposal by Rikster2, as it resolves the above problems with ease and is WP:CONSISTENT with other articles for these people. RGloucester — ☎ 14:30, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- Comment. How about James Yap (Olympic basketballer)? I'm guessing this probably wouldn't be the standard disambiguation, but it does seem more fitting and more likely to get the reader where they want to go. IgnorantArmies (talk) 13:50, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- "Basketballer" is a really arcane term and not used broadly, it is not like "footballer." Right now there are only 2 James Yaps associated with basketball and the other is a modern player. People will figure it out pretty easily. Rikster2 (talk) 23:01, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Post-first RM close discussion
editReopening. I received a note on my talk page that the suggestion "born 1993" had an error. Pending on whether this should simply then just be "born 1933"... Apologies for the mess. — Andy W. (talk · ctb) 02:54, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
