Categories edit

I have restored categories. Though the school is closed readers might well want to find information on it and categories are there to enable pages to be found. TerriersFan (talk) 16:51, 17 December 2007

  • This is the only CLOSED school in the country listed in the categories "Roman Catholic secondary schools in <US State>". Clearly, "Defunct schools" is the appropriate category as the school is no longer a Roman Catholic secondary school in Illinois. It should also be removed from "Boys' schools in the United States". Perhaps a new category, "Defunct Roman Catholic secondary schools in the United States"... EagleFan (talk) 17:48, 17 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • While I can't think of them off the top of my head, I know of several defunct schools listed in the RC cats around the country, the ones I'm thinking of being in both New Jersey and New York. I see no harm in including this school in a category that specifies "Articles about Catholic high schools in Illinois." as its inclusion criteria, one that seems to be met. I agree that a defunct category might be helpful, but I see few negatives in including HCHS here, and leaving it out of all such categories makes it only more difficult for anyone to find this particular school. • I don't believe that is true. It seems to be the only one.EagleFan (talk) 15:15, 18 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Whether it is the first or only actually doesn't matter. The purpose of categories is simply to enable pages to be found. Since this has been a 'Roman Catholic secondary school in Illinois' someone looking for it might well go to the 'Roman Catholic secondary schools in Illinois' category! Likewise someone interested in articles on Cook County might well be interested in this school - why make it harder for them to find? However, if we take it out of this category we should be consistent and take William Shakespeare out of the English poets category, for example, because he hasn't written anything for years!
  • There are situations where it might be more confusing to include non-current members of a category or the number of non-current members might overwhelm the current. Given the extremely small number of defunct Roman Catholic high schools in Illinois (or elsewhere) with articles -- none of us can think of another article that fits the bill -- it would seem to make little sense to create a separate category just for this school, nor would there be any confusion caused by including it in the existing categories. If there were hundreds, or even dozens, of such articles, it might make sense to start thinking about an alternate structure of categories for defunct schools. Until then, I think we should categorize this article the same way we are treating all other such schools. Alansohn (talk) 17:48, 18 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
