Comparisons to active judges or to Reagan's appointees

edit

I'm confused. At the FJC, when you search on the judges appointed by Ronald Reagan, it only lists 358 names. But this article, and Ronald Reagan judicial appointments, show 376. What gives?

Also, the FJC shows 795 judges in active status, with 492 more in senior status. 38/795 = 4.8%, which is probably a more accurate figure. After all, the point of the statistic is that if a president today were to appoint justices to all seats (as Washington was able to do), he would be able to appoint 795 judges (not 795+492), of which 38 is closer to 5% than 2%.

But then, this is still comparing apples to oranges, since many of Washington's appointments were to the same seat (consecutively). So a fair comparison (I think) would be between the 795 (+vacancies?) seats currently and the 27 (?) seats at the time. – Quadell (talk) 13:13, 19 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • I meant that, of all 3,200+ federal judges ever appointed, Washington appointed less than 2% (even though he appointed the entire federal judiciary for eight years). The number of active judges right now is somewhat lower than the number of positions - there are, I believe, about 60 vacancies on the federal courts right now. About the difference for Reagan, I would guess that the eighteen judge difference is the number of two-time appointments (i.e. people Reagan first appointed to a District Court, and then to a Court of Appeals. bd2412 T 16:19, 19 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
