editDid Damasio actually originate the idea of core consciousness or did he pick up on somebody elses work? Are Damasio's speculations about the seat of core consciousness acurately represented in earlier versions of this article? Are editors insisting on maintaining the unverified information because of an attitude toward the original author, or because they are familiar with Damasio's work and other works exploring the subject of consciousness? Unless somebody is familiar with Damasio, or has the integrity to establish a dialogue with the original author, this page could probably be deleted. Verificator 05:38, 29 Apr 2004 (UTC)
- What specifically in the below text that you reverted, besides the role of Damasio's contributions, do you find inaccurate? [1] appears to support that Damasio has a theory of core consciousness, and his belief in the role of the thalamus and cingulate cortex. [2] is a review of his paper that links him to the idea that the superior colliculus is significant. Thanks. Wmahan. 09:17, 2004 May 1 (UTC)
In biological psychology the core consciousness describes a hypothesized level of awareness facilitated by neural structures of most animals that allows them to be aware of, and react to their environment.
Core consciousness is said to arise from a core self, which is an audience for an endlessly changing stream of stimulus and reaction resulting from interaction with an environment.
The concept was popularized by a neurology department chairman from University of Iowa College of Medicine. Antonio Damasio theorized a core self-perception in the human brain arises from structures in the medial or central areas of the brain, including perhaps the superior colliculus, the thalamus and the cingulate cortex.

Merger proposal
editUnless anybody has real good arguments against this, I will merge this article with Protoself, but not sooner than 6/6. Lova Falk talk 16:21, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
- Actually, I decided not to do this. Both protoself and core consciousness, and, by the way, extended consciousness should all be sections in a new article that might be called Damasio's theory of consciousness. I haven't read Damasio's book and don't really know enough of this theory to create this article. I'll also remove the tag. Lova Falk talk 12:49, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
Plans for Improvement
editI am working on the article currently titled 'Core Consciousness'. I plan to merge two other articles with this page, those articles being 'Protoself'(being the preconscious state) and 'Extended Consciousness'(the autobiographical self). I will expand upon these stubs with information I have collected from my references listed on my sandbox page. This article would then be inclusive of Damasio's threefold theory of consciousness. I would like to rename the article 'Damasio's Theory of Consciousness'. In addition to this, I plan to remove the current sections entitled 'Daniel Stern' and 'Physical Origins' as I do not feel they are relevant to the article. - Hi Rachaelallen91! Before merging articles you need to ask for consensus within the community. This is done by putting merger templates on top of the articles. More details can be found at WP:Merging and on Help:Merging. It might seem complicated but it is not that hard. Give it a try and drop me a note if you have problems! Then you should wait for at least a week, and if there is consensus for merging, or if nobody protests, you can go ahead and merge. Good luck! Lova Falk talk 07:56, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
- Actually, I now see my own merger proposal that I wrote three years ago. What do you think about my idea then to merge protoself, core consciousness, and extended consciousness into a new article that might be called Damasio's theory of consciousness? Lova Falk talk 08:00, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hey Lova Falk Thanks for the info. I will propose the merge. I like your idea. I'm re-writing this article for a class project, in an attempt to improve upon the content and quality of the article. I, too, thought it would be a better idea to merge these three articles into one, to provide a more comprehensive explanation of Damasio's theory. Rachaelallen91 (talk) 23:02, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- I'm looking forward to reading it. Good luck and drop me a note if you need some help. Lova Falk talk 18:59, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Qualia- possibly controversial
editI put a cite needed template in regarding this statement: " Emotions are a collection of unconscious neural responses to qualia." While I personally believe this statement is true, as far as I know from my reading of Damasio, he never uses the term "qualia". Dennet for example notes this, but does seem to make the assertion Damasio is speaking of qualia. For example, "Damasio sees that the only way to explain the presumptive qualia is, once again, to distribute their effects and powers through the body, instead of concentrating them in some imaginary dazzle in the eyes of the Cartesian homunculus." | Dennet essay here: "Review of Damasio, Descartes' Error"
"Qualia" does not appear in the Bosse citation for the paragraph. |direct link to bosse pdf article here.- J JMesserly (talk) 21:03, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
