Errata

This page has two sources:

• this page from Richard Fletcher, which does not discuss Mauretania and is about 376; when Fletcher discusses the fall of the West, he does not mention Mauretania.
• This journal article which deals with the conquest of the Garamantes in Libya, while the area here discussed was under the rule of Juba II, a Roman ally. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 00:55, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

keep -- oppose deletion; if this article is completely wrong, then so are at least 2 widely-accepted maps of the period. agree that it needs more better reference-sources & that the specific details are open to challenge & revision. Lx 121 (talk) 13:16, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Actually, the map predates the article - in fact, I suspect the original writer of the article followed the map too literally (so far as I can tell, the map is being over-precise in an area where we just don't have precision) and then looked in his available sources for citations that seemed to back what he thought the map showed. I also suspect the page he connected to for his first citation was the wrong one, but I wasn't prepared to search further for a statement that almost certainly didn't quite say what he thought it did - in fact, I've entirely rewritten that bit, using a better source. On other matters: I think that the original writer misread his source for the statement about Balbus, and that it refers to Tripolitania rather than Mauretania, but I've left the statement in for now as I haven't confirmed its inaccuracy; and the article title needs changing (I'd suggest to Romano-Moorish kingdoms but I'm very open to alternatives). Yes - the article already mentioned one bit of evidence, and I have just edited it to make that clearer. Both the sources I have cited talk of "kings" or "kingdoms" in this context, though it's likely that we are looking at rulers far nearer to the scale of the Welsh kings of the early Middle Ages than to Clovis or Theodoric. My humble contribution: yes, I remember reading the inscriptions a long time ago, cannot remember where. I agree with the post by user P. Wilkinson, the situation and station of those kingdoms is similar to those of Britain's Vortigern Protector. Roman-Maurish kingdoms in the extreme west of Roman Africa are attested epigraphically.Aldrasto11 (talk) 06:05, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
