Citizenship and WP:BLP requirements

edit

Danielle is said to have Australian and South Korean citizenship in Wikipedia without a reliable source. South Korea does not permit dual citizenship. She has a mother from South Korea, and she there are sources describing her as Korean Australian, but not a South Korean citizen specifically. It is possible she naturalised, but then she would not be an Australian citizen. WP:BLP applies. Travelmite (talk) 00:05, 28 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

For those who are born with multiple nationalities, such as Daniel, the Korean government allows them to have multiple nationalities through a pledge of non-existent foreign nationality. Under this arrangement, Daniel can have both Korean and Australian citizenship. She was also proven to have Korean citizenship by voting in Korea's parliamentary elections in April 2024, and holds a Korean passport even if she looks at the video of her arrival at the airport. 118.35.95.243 (talk) 09:24, 29 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also, according to the article below, it is written in Korean that Danielle and her sister have both Korean and Australian nationalities.

The article talks about speculation regarding Danielle and her sister, rather than these singers announcing they are sisters and dual-citizens. It does not meet WP:BLP standards. Travelmite (talk) 11:55, 30 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

South Korea enforces against dual citizenship [1], so editors must also exclude material that suggests any legal impropriety WP:SUSPECT, which this article seems to do. Editors must also consider the subject's privacy WP:BLPPRIVACY. It is likely that the matter is private to the singer, and not disclosed. Travelmite (talk) 00:45, 28 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

The MOS:INFOBOXNTLY suggests to avoid citizenship and not use nationality. They say avoid incorrect assumptions under nationality law and omit where there are complex cases. Music websites may not be regarded as reliable on legal issues. As a WP:BLP issue, it may be removed as many times as necessary, as per WP:3RRBLP. South Korean media outlets have reported that Danielle holds Korean and Australian citizenship. In addition Ador, NewJeans' agency, revealed that members MINJI and Danielle exercised their right to vote in the 2024 Republic of Korea General Election. The South Korean government only grants voting rights in Korea General Electionthe elections to South Korean citizens who are 18 years of age or older. This proves that Danielle is a South Korean citizen. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.35.95.243 (talk) 15:54, 29 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Media outlets have made incorrect biographical statements about Danielle, such as [2] which says Danielle was born in South Korea. WP:BLP requires that sources be reliable. We must avoid content that may mirror Wikipedia WP:CIRC. It is doubtful that both Marsh sisters released their citizenship details to the media, given that dual-citizenship is restricted (see above). It appears to be a legal assumption.
The source about Danelle and Minji voting appears to be more specific and reliable, however the infobox edit implies Danielle renounced her Australian citizenship. That is not publicly known. As a non-political figure, Danielle voting and her citizenship is not notable. MOS:ETHNICITY says "controversial or unclear cases, nationality is sometimes omitted". It does seem that she voted, and therefore is exercising a citizen's right to vote, but it would be WP:NOR a presumption to say what her citizenship status just that. WP:BLP requires we "get this right". Travelmite (talk) 11:09, 30 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Voting

edit

User talk:118.35.95.243 provided this ref which say Danielle voted in the South Korean election.[1] This seem enough to say she is South Korean, but does not confirm she is still (or is not) an Australian citizen. Travelmite (talk) 12:15, 30 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

The sources are inconsistent about how to describe Danielle, however there is enough information to say she is "Australian South Korean" or "South Korean Australian". Given that she voted in South Korea, the first option was chosen. A dash is omitted to avoid a dual citizen assumption, as per WP:BLP caution. Travelmite (talk) 12:39, 30 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
