Worthy of keeping (notable)

edit

The article's existence is under challenge for notability. There is a problem in that I know that the Bridgeport brand is very notable (within the machining industry) and that people on the shop floor often call even the clones "Bridgeports" (just like a Band-Aid clone is called a Band-Aid); but I have no refs at hand to prove it. And have no practical way to find one. I don't think it's even possible to search the industry's literature—AFAIK there are no indexing and abstracting services for this industry's journals. And even if one exists, I wouldn't have access to it. It is the old WP problem of knowing the common knowledge within a field but not being able to cite a ref to prove it. — ¾-10 13:42, 1 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I too have heard many people refer to all Bridgeport-type machines as "bridgeports". I'm going to attempt to clean up the wording a bit, since it seems a very convoluted way to make a simple point: people use "bridgeport" the same way they use "band-aid" or "coke".
If you like I can send you a photograph of a bank of 3 bridgeport milling machines at my work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oliver at 81.158.153.1 (talk) 15:10, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Oliver. It would be great if you can contribute the photo. The best way to do it is to go to this page and upload your file. I know that page contains a lot of info, but really if you just enter the most basic info and make sure to select a license (the one marked "(recommended)" is fine), you can ignore 90% of it if you want to. If you end up uploading it, let me know here, and I'll put the photo in this article. Or you can do that yourself. The syntax is not too hard, just insert [[File:FILENAME|thumb|Caption]] (where FILENAME=whatever you named it) and it'll show up. Whatever level of editing you care to do is great, or if not, I'll go from there. Thanks! — ¾-10 22:04, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
