Talk:List of ministerial by-elections to the Parliament of the United Kingdom

Merging in unique articles

edit

I'm going to start to merge in pages where:

  1. They are ministerial byelections
  2. They are listed in this page
  3. They are unopposed
  4. There is no current coverage outside listings of by-elections
  5. There is no other indication of notability within the article

The history, talk pages and categories will remain, and the article can be re-created with little effort

There was a debate in the Article for deletion and it became clear that the byelections are going to have sources that will become notable at some point (the article in question was carefully chosen as one that showed no promise).

However the articles are giving little information at the moment, and merging the articles will give more information about the process.

Numbered parliaments?

edit

I have never seen parliaments numbered like this before. Is this a Wikipedia thing? DuncanHill (talk) 22:22, 9 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I've just noticed this. It's utter nonsense. British Parliaments used to be named before 1688 (after which point Parliament was expected to be called regularly) but are not numbered like sessions of the US House of Representatives. Somebody needs to get rid of this.Paulturtle (talk) 19:39, 4 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Two issues

edit
  1. Why is the list upside-down? WP:SALORDER says lists should be in earliest-to-latest chronological order, and it will be a boring amount of effort to correct it.
  2. The list includes a lot of by-elections that were triggered by appointment to a paid office under the Crown, but that could in no way be described as "ministerial" - e.g. commissions in the Army and judicial appointments.

MOS:HEAD

edit

Headings should normally not contain links, especially where only part of a heading is linked.

Is someone able to move the links from some headers to a Main article template within their respective sections? Thanks in advance! jd22292 (Jalen D. Folf) (talk • contribs) 17:58, 13 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Page size

edit

This page is currently 504,644 bytes long; that's far too big. What's the best way to split it? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:18, 14 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Splitting it into elections to the Parliament of Great Britain and to the Parliament of the United Kingdom would be the most obvious. Opera hat (talk) 14:27, 14 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
I've split off List of ministerial by-elections to the Parliament of Great Britain, and renamed this article accordingly. Please check both. That said, they are each still too long. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:50, 21 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
