• Looking at Robert_Smith#Baseball, it does not seem that the comma is necessary, although I think the past RFC endorsed using the comma. I am wondering why the other pitchers don't use the comma. • It looks like the Bob Smith's are a bit out of convention, not just the one noted here. In looking at the naming conventions guidelines, and the use of their name in baseball-reference.com and retrosheet.org, here is how they should be named:
  • Bob Smith (1910s pitcher) ==> Bob Smith (pitcher, born 1890)
  • Bob Smith (1920s/30s pitcher) ==> Bob Smith (pitcher, born 1895)
  • Bob Smith (pitcher born 1928) ==> Bob Smith (pitcher, born 1928)
  • Bob Smith (pitcher born 1931) ==> Bob Smith (pitcher, born 1931)
  • Bobby Smith (baseball) ==> Bob Smith (infielder)++
  • Bobby Gene Smith ==> Bobby Smith (baseball)++
  • Rob Smith (baseball coach) ==> Rob Smith (baseball)
  • Robert Smith (baseball) - seems fine
• I agree that a comma probably shouldn't be required, but that is just how it is presented in NC-BASE.Neonblak ^talk - 19:02, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

Since this conversation hasn't generated much discussion or any controversy, and I have the time today, I will go ahead and begin some of these changes. If someone would like to assist, I would welcome that. The ones I marked with ++ will need someone with move rights than I don't have (I think).Neonblak ^talk - 17:43, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Old Bob Smith

I came across a 1936 baseball article tonight where Smith was referred to as old Bob Smith (emphasis mine). Was the use of the word old commonly used by sportswriters of that era to distinguish him from a younger Bob Smith who was also playing at the same time? Bob305 (talk) 03:14, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
