BoFs can facilitate networking and partnership formation among subgroups, including functionally-oriented groups such as CEOs or geographically-oriented groups. BoFs generally allow for more audience interaction than the panel discussions typically seen at conventions; the discussions are not completely unguided, though, as there is still a discussion leader.

I don't think this is specific to computing/IT

I think I've seen these kinds of sessions at non-IT meetings, although I can't think of a specific example at the moment. It this is true, then the article should be made more general. ike9898 (talk) 20:59, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Yes, Birds of a feather is a common term, not onti used in computing/IT. It is not synonym with the IETF's birds of a feather. The article should be reworked, keeping the IETF only as one particular example. See reverted edits. Please improve collaboratively.--Pierre5018 (talk) 14:14, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

The oldest reference

It would seam that this was a popular event at the USENEX conference where the level of (dis)organization sat well with the Usenet News participants. All of the early references are conferences, and all are computer conferences (of course those were the only people on the net at the time).

There will be a "birds of a feather" meeting at USENIX for people using or 
otherwise interested in UCB 2.8bsd UNIX. Some of the implementors will be
available as well as canonical bug reports and revisions.

Please bring your bug reports, gripes, fixes, suggestions and other ideas.

No time or place has been set, but usually these kinds of meetings take
place in the evening just after dinner. Assignment of time and place occurs
sometime on the first day.

Etymology of the expression

The paragraph concerning the origin of the expression is especially useful to non-native english speakers. I was really wondering what it meant in reality outside of its computer science meaning.

Why is this considered a stub?

AFAICS, this article covers everything about the subject. It defines the word, provides a bit of history, & even has citations. While the history section could be filled out a little more, & maybe someone has a colorful example of a BoF session, there really isn't much more that could be added. Unless someone does come up with an aspect needing coverage, I'd recommend this to be promoted to "Start" class, although it may be within its theoretical limits of coverage & practically be "B" class. The redirection is misleading : in computing, birds of a feather (BoF) is more general than IETF BoF

This redirection page leads to the IETF's BoF. In computing, Birds of a feather is not a synonym for the IETF's Birds of a feather.

Other computing organizations organize BoF meetings..

BoF meetings are found in any domain

Possible solutions:

• delete the redirection page, because it is of little use
• rename the redirection to "Birds of a feather (IETF)"
• change the page to an article itemizing different BoF groups in computing, including of course the IETF BoF

To editor Pierre5018: your concerns are noted, and it seems that the target article, "Internet Engineering Task Force", is the only article on Wikipedia where the computing "Birds of a feather" applies. So it is a valid redirect to that target article until other computing articles are found or written that are also about organizing BoF meetings.
