Inclusion in LGBT categories

edit

I've included him in two LGBT categories on the basis of this video (from the 2:30 mark onward). Rafe87 (talk) 07:16, 16 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

OK, but there is no news of his sexuality being something that is discussed. - https://www.google.bg/search?q=ben+platt+gay&oq=ben+platt+gay&gs_l=psy-ab.3...18349.20662.0.21179.10.7.0.0.0.0.122.681.6j1.7.0....0...1.1.64.psy-ab..4.3.316...0j35i39k1.Rb3Iwb_Z1Zo We don't if he is gay or bisexual.Radiohist (talk) 03:42, 28 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. I'm not good with leaping to conclusions based on a few secs on YouTube about a failed experience in his youth. X4n6 (talk) 06:14, 28 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
This video is also highly edited, and has no clear context or statement, and as such does not strike me as a sound source on anything. Henry chianski (talk) 16:48, 28 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Per WP:CATEGRS, the criteria has "the subject's sexual orientation is relevant to their public life or notability, according to reliable published sources. " I don't think it's relevant, especially when there's a ton of reliable published sources that does not promote his sexual orientation. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 17:08, 28 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Borderline homophobic to describe his relationship as an experience, a word never used to label heterosexual relationships. As for this - "I don't think it's relevant, especially when there's a ton of reliable published sources that does not promote his sexual orientation" - it's pure gibberish. Rafe87 (talk) 09:59, 10 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Rafe87: I have reverted your edits on the LGBT categories as Consensus was reached to not include them and I can't find a reliable source where he is described or says he is Gay or Bisexual. Ben Platt tends not to talk about his relationships WP:CATEGRS says to be included only when the subject has self-identified as LGBT and it's relevant to their public life or lifestyle, as he doesn't talk about it, in my view, it fails on both of these.Jobscomforter (talk) 12:20, 10 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. Additionally, what is "pure gibberish" is the presumption that the word "experience" is in any way homophobic - and even more absurd to claim the term has never been used in a heterosexual context. You will not intimidate inclusion of poorly sourced material. Call it what you will, we're following WP policies. If you're going to contribute to this project, I would strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with those policies. X4n6 (talk) 11:33, 11 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Rafe87 It is just not something that can be confirmed. Whether he is gay or bisexual. I do fully agree with you that the phrase "experience" is a bit on the homophobic side. It is clear that X4n6 should have worded that better.Radiohist (talk)
Radiohist no such thing is "clear" - and it is presumptuous - and offensive - to claim otherwise. The End. X4n6 (talk) 03:44, 1 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Describing a heterosexual romance as a 'relationship' but a homosexual romance as an 'experience', to me, falls more under straight privilege than casual homophobia—but it can certainly be both. Ultimately, I think it's laughable that the consensus is not to categorise under LGBT categories; even if he had a SINGLE gay relationship, at ANY point in time, that's sufficient for inclusion under said categories. Living persons have been added to LGBT categories for far, far less than talking about a breakup with a partner of the same sex. The consensus reeks so strongly of straight privilege that I think I'm going to take a shower to wash it off. 2606:6000:61A0:7700:CEB:575E:8635:9B06 (talk) 06:37, 29 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
2606:6000:61A0:7700:CEB:575E:8635:9B06 Well, actually his sexuality has been mentioned in articles, so I'll add the categories now.Radiohist (talk) 15:07, 9 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
What articles? And how is this career-defining? I've removed the categories, again. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 16:10, 9 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
AngusWOOF I'll re-add them with the proper sources. How is his being born in 1993 career-defining? How is his being born in California career-defining? The articles is not just about the career, it's about the person's life in general.Radiohist (talk) 16:18, 9 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Radiohist, please again read WP:CATEGRS regarding defining; note that year of birth or born in California isn't part of that discussion. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 16:42, 9 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
It should be something self-identifying like Em Grosland saying "I identify as transgender" in this Playbill article [1] and with news articles then referring to the person in that manner like Denver Post: [2] AngusWOOF (barksniff) 17:39, 10 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Move to Ben Platt?

edit

Since he is gaining in recognition and popularity, what is the protocol for moving this article to the main Ben Platt one? For one, he is no longer just an actor but a singer/recording artist as well. 98.187.239.5 (talk) 13:46, 14 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

I would like to request an edit because of some of this information are wrong like how Platt is an almost EGOT winner, and now that "Sing To Me Instead" is now out. Jeremy Heere Mell (talk) 23:51, 1 April 2019 (UTC)\Reply

Ben Platt (actor)Ben Platt – Per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Currently, the page "Ben Platt" is a disambig that lists three pages: one for this article about the actor, one stub article for a retired cricketer, and one for a businessman who died in 1960. Per the Pageviews Analysis, the articles for the cricketer and businessman average between 1 and 8 views per day, respectively, while the article for the actor averages over 6,300 (and has far exceeded the traffic for the other two articles for as far back as the pageview records go). RfC Platt and Noah Galvin’s romantically dating

The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

It’s been widely reported that Ben Platt and Noah Galvin have been dating, and with Covid19, quarantining together. When two celebrities are romantically involved it’s routine to report that on both their biographies. One editor has deemed the information non-relevant for some reason.

Should the following be added to their articles?:

In May 2020, Galvin announced he is dating actor-singer Ben Platt, star of The Politician and who, like Galvin, played the lead role in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway; Platt originated the role in 2015, Galvin replaced him in 2017.[1][2][3][4][5]

  • Support, when celebrities date like this it’s routine to include the public information on their bios. Gleeanon409 (talk) 19:56, 26 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment. It was removed per "WP:NOTATABLOID", which is a redirect to an essay not to a policy or guideline. Anyway there is a clear misinterpretation by the remover, because it says: "we are not in the business of 'outing' people or publishing revelations about their private lives", yet we aren't, Galvin/Platt did. If anything, the most relevant sentence is "it is important to use sensitivity and good judgment in determining whether a piece of information should be recorded for posterity", but then again, this is not a policy. © Tbhotch (en-3). 20:42, 26 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per WP:NOTATABLOID, people date all the time, we're not in the habit of listing who every dates in their life time. Yes, they've publicly acknowledged it, but my stance is unless they get engaged, I prefer to wait until they've been dating a year minimum before mention it on pages. QueerFilmNerdtalk 21:08, 26 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
    • NOTATABLOID advises “Generally speaking, nonpublic information consists of private details about an individual that have not been published in the mainstream media and are not widely known.“ This is not the case. They shared the information themselves on mass media, it’s publicly known widely. Is there some other reason we should omit this well-known information that is routinely reported on other bios? Gleeanon409 (talk) 21:17, 26 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. It is normal to include information on people's personal lives when they have been covered in reliable sources. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 22:38, 26 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per QueerFilmNerd's response and per WP:NOTNEWS, which outlines how routine news reporting of . . . celebrities is not a sufficient basis for inclusion in the encyclopedia. Even Galvin himself says that their being together is relatively new. KyleJoantalk 02:18, 27 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
    • QueerFilmNerd’s comment has already been debunked. As this is the first notable romantic relationship either of them has had, reliable sources disagree with your opinion. Routine reporting of a celebrity is sightings, watching them shop, or taking part in promotional activities. This is miles from that. Gleeanon409 (talk) 03:22, 27 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
You “don't see how hypothesizing how notable the relationship is to them bears any relevance to this discussion”? That they are living together, socializing online seemingly as a couple, celebrating life events, etc.? Not sure if the blindingly obvious needs to be pointed out, or if it’s willfully being ignored.
